Aakvaag 4 Institutional Change in Norway: The Importance of the Public Sphere6 The goal of this chapter is to provide a new and better theoretical account of the overall pattern of institutional change in modern Norway by emphasizing the importance of the public sphere. One effective way to describe the modernization of Norway is as a cumulative process whereby new categories of individuals – peasants, workers and women – have gradually been included as full members in society (Koht, 1953; Furre, 2000; Slagstad, 1998, pp. 417–418; Rokkan, 2010; Sejersted, 2005, 2000, pp. 18–20 and 23–25). This social transformation has taken place through large-scale institutional changes that sociologists need to explain. This chapter argues that the four currently dominating theoretical models of institutional change are not fully up to this task for two reasons. Models that accentuate either external shocks or incremental accumula- tion cannot account for the highly ‘political’, goal-oriented and reflexively monitored aspect of overall institutional change in Norway, whilst the two dominant models of political collective decision making, voting and bargaining, cannot account for the high level of consensus that have fed into processes of institutional change both as their input and outcome. To overcome these deficits, this chapter takes a different approach, what might be called ‘deliberative’ or ‘discursive’ institutionalism (Schmidt 2008). DEPARTMENT OF Scandinavian Studies Message from the Chair TERJE LEIREN Celebrating the centennial of its founding is a significant milestone for any institution, no less an academic department at a major research university. Since its establishment by an act of the Washington State Legislature in 1909, the Department of Scandinavian Studies has grown and prospered, largely due to the dedication of its faculty and staff and the excellent character and quality of its students. To com- memorate the milestone, several celebratory events, including lectures, dinners, special programs, and conferences are being scheduled between now and the summer of 2010. Please stay in touch with us, check our departmental website, and plan to attend as many events as you can over the next two years. Of course, at the heart of what we do in the Department is teaching and scholarship. Cutting-edge research and innovative teaching enhance and broaden our knowledge about, and appreciation of, the Nordic region. Our comprehensive language programs and wide range of course offerings focusing on the five Nordic countries and the three Baltic countries make the Department unique in the world. The UW is the only North American university that regularly teaches Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian. In 2009–2010, we will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Baltic Studies program. By its very nature, the teaching at a research university is informed by the research of its teachers. All of the faculty in the Department of Scandinavian Studies are active scholars who bring their SPRING 2008 research back into the classroom, whether it be for a graduate seminar on literary theory, a discus- sion of Strindberg’s Paris, a broad introductory course on Scandinavian culture, or an advanced undergraduate course on the cinematic expressions of Scandinavian attitudes about sexuality or crime fiction. -

Scandinavica Vol 56 No 2 2017 Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People: An Inter-sociocultural Perspective Mitsuya Mori Professor Emeritus, Seijo University Abstract Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People is frequently performed worldwide today. Its popularity must be due to the relevance of the problems depicted therein to the current global context, such as extreme individualism, democracy vs. mobocracy, environmental pollution, manipulation of information, and the conservative education system. An Enemy of the People was the first Ibsen play to be staged in Japan, although it was adapted for the Japanese setting. At the time of its staging, it reflected the then much-debated issue of copper mine pollution in central Japan. Norway and Japan underwent similar processes of modernization in the second half of the nineteenth century, although with a certain time lag. Therefore, in order to properly appreciate An Enemy of the People today, this article examines the play from an inter-sociocultural perspective. Adopting this perspective allows us to demonstrate the continued relevance of Ibsen to our post-modern world. In contrast to his other plays, there is no complex psycho- logical investigation of characters or their relationships, nor is there any demonstration of complicated conflicts between characters. -

Parents: Marichen (née Altenburg) and Knud Ibsen, merchant. 1835 Father has to give up his business. The properties are auctioned off. The family moves to Venstøp, a farm in Gjerpen. 1843 Confirmed in Gjerpen church. Family moves to Snipetorp in Skien. Ibsen leaves home in November. Arrives in Grimstad on November 29th to be apprenticed to Jens Aarup Reimann, chemist. 1846 Has an illegitimate child by Else Sophie Jensdatter, one of Reimann’s servants. 1847 Lars Nielsen takes over ownership of the chemist’s, moving to larger premises. 1849 Ibsen writes Catiline. 1850 Goes to Christiania to study for the university entrance examination. Catiline is published under the pseudonym Brynjolf Bjarme. Edits the Students’ Union paper Samfundsbladet and the satirical weekly Andhrimner. First Ibsen staging in history: the one-act The Burial Mound is performed at Christiania Theatre on September 26th. 1851 Moves to Bergen to begin directing productions at Det norske Theatre. Study tour to Copenhagen and Dresden. 1853 First performance of St. John’s Night. 1854 First performance of The Burial Mound in a revised version. 1855 First performance of Lady Inger. 1856 First performance of The Feast at Solhaug. Becomes engaged to Suzannah Thoresen. 1857 First performance of Olaf Liljekrans. Is appointed artistic director of Kristiania Norske Theatre. 1858 Marries Suzannah Thoresen on June 18th. First performance of The Vikings at Helgeland. 1859 Writes the poem "Paa Vidderne" ("Life on the Upland") and the cycle of poems "I billedgalleriet" ("At the Art Gallery"). -

Unlike so many pioneers, immigrants and scholars, I have not made the trip across the Atlantic. The work of Theodore C. Blegen, Orm Øverland, and Steinar Kjærheim and many, many others to gather, transcribe and translate such letters have made it possible for me to rummage some eight hundred America letters, both in Oslo and in London. Moreover, Google Books, Bokhylla.no, Hathi Trust, and the Internet Archive are incredible tools, and so is the National Library of Norway’s website “the Promise of America”: together they give access to most of the main sources for the history of Norwegian migration to America. Offline, the Norwegian- American collection of the National Library is an entire library of itself. But while I appreciate that microfilmed versions of all the major Norwegian American newspapers have been procured by the National Library, I nonetheless blame twenty volumes of poorly photographed antebellum weeklies, all set in black-letter typeface, for my eventual need of having to procure glasses. -

My project addresses the need for studies in multilingual American literature by examining the concept of home or Vesterheimen (literally, “the western home”) in Norwegian-American literature. I argue that ethnic writers use the notion of home to claim and/or criticize American values and to narrate individual and collective identities—in essence, to write themselves into American literature and culture. Hence these “hyphenated” American authors are united in the common imaginative project of creating a home and history in the United States. My project locates and examines Vesterheimen in three main contexts: place, community, and culture. The first part of the dissertation focuses on Norwegian- American print culture as a dynamic force in shaping and promoting ethnic consciousness. The first and second chapters provide case studies on Augsburg Publishing House and one of its feature publications, the Christmas annual Jul i Vesterheimen. -

Thranebevegelsen På Nedre Romerike Skrevet Av Nils Steinar Våge
Et lite utdrag fra årbok XXIII 2017 «Romerike i dampens tid» Thranebevegelsen på Nedre Romerike Skrevet av Nils Steinar Våge Thranebevegelsen var den første organiserte arbeiderforeningen i landet. Den fikk sitt navn etter grunnleggeren, skribenten og agitatoren Marcus Thrane, og den var aktiv i årene 1849- 1851. På dette tidspunktet var landet i en vanskelig økonomisk og sosial situasjon med økonomiske kriser og store ungdomskull som søkte arbeid. De fleste medlemmene kom fra lavere sosiale lag i byene og på landsbygda, og på det meste hadde bevegelsen omkring 30 000 medlemmer fordelt på ca. 400 foreninger på Østlandet, Sørlandet, Trøndelag og noen få steder på Vestlandet. Størst var oppslutningen på Østlandet. Bevegelsen oppsto i byene. Den spredte seg raskt til bygdene der den fikk flest tilhengere i bondesamfunnets laveste sosialgrupper, men den hadde også et innslag av bønder. Derfor kan den også ses på som en protestbevegelse fra landsbygda. Bevegelsen hadde en likhet med et moderne politisk parti ved at den bygde opp lokallag, opprettet partiavis, fikk i stand et landsstyre og hadde landsmøte som øverste organ. De politiske ideene kom fra Februarrevolusjonen i Frankrike i 1848, og de var kjent for Marcus Thrane, som kalte seg sosialist og agiterte for ideene. I de sju bygdene på Nedre Romerike ble det stiftet 13 foreninger med til sammen 929 medlemmer, og den første foreningen kom i Nittedal i april 1850. Bøndene på Nedre Romerike utgjorde omkring 8 % av medlemmene. Resten tilhørte lavere sosiale lag i bondesamfunnet. Tresnitt fra omkring 1850. Fra Norsk biografisk leksikon. He is often referred to as "the father of realism" and is one of the founders of Modernism in theatre.[2] His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Ghosts, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, and The Master Builder. He is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare,[3][4] and A Doll's House became the world's most performed play by the early 20th century.[5] Several of his later dramas were considered scandalous to many of his era, when European theatre was expected to model strict morals of family life and propriety. Ibsen's later work examined the realities Henrik Ibsen by Gustav Borgen that lay behind many façades, revealing much that Born Henrik Johan Ibsen was disquieting to many contemporaries. It utilized a 20 March 1828 critical eye and free inquiry into the conditions of life Skien, Grenland, Norway and issues of morality.
