Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen. -

Frank Lloyd Wright, architect (1869-1959) For many of us growing up in the 1960s rural South, the world of ghosts, witches and magic was never far away. Grandparents and parents often told hair-raising stories of mysterious happenings and eerie events as a form of entertainment, as children sat entranced in wide-eyed amazement. The idea of a ghost or witch out there in the dark filled many a night with excitement and wonder. In many homes, the sense of the presence of a beloved, deceased family member was often noted with comfort and the reassurance that we would someday “meet on that golden shore.” In this era, before the Internet and television’s mindless absorption of our free time, we often felt we could sense that which was unseen, and provided we didn’t make too much of a fuss about it, we were free to believe in the miraculous without fear of rebuke or censure. -

religions Article Continuing Conjure: African-Based Spiritual Traditions in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing James Mellis Guttman Community College, 50 West 40th St., New York, NY 10018, USA; [email protected] Received: 10 April 2019; Accepted: 23 June 2019; Published: 26 June 2019 Abstract: In 2016 and 2017, Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing both won the National Book Award for fiction, the first time that two African-American writers have won the award in consecutive years. This article argues that both novels invoke African-based spirituality in order to create literary sites of resistance both within the narrative of the respective novels, but also within American culture at large. By drawing on a tradition of authors using African-based spiritual practices, particularly Voodoo, hoodoo, conjure and rootwork, Whitehead and Ward enter and engage in a tradition of African American protest literature based on African spiritual traditions, and use these traditions variously, both as a tie to an originary African identity, but also as protection and a locus of resistance to an oppressive society. That the characters within the novels engage in African spiritual traditions as a means of locating a sense of “home” within an oppressive white world, despite the novels being set centuries apart, shows that these traditions provide a possibility for empowerment and protest and can act as a means for contemporary readers to address their own political and social concerns. It rises to a process of synchretism between Yoruba's traditional religion in West Australia and the roman Catholic form of Christianity. There is no central authority in control of the movement. Candombé is monoteistic, involved in the revered sprit known as oriented berries who work as intermediary for Supreme So-called Oludumaré. These are often identified both as Yoruba Orishas as well as Roman Catholic saints. Several myths and stories are told about what they orishas. As an oral tradition, it does not contain holy scriptures. Practice at Candombé believes in a Supreme Creator named Oludumaré, who is served by smaller deites, called Orishas. Each practitioner believes they have their own orisha, which controls his destiny and acts as a challenger. Music and dance are important parts of Candomblé ritual, since the dance allows worship to come into track with their orishas. At the ripes, participants made offerings such as minerals, vegetables, and cattle. Candomblé does not include the skeptics of good and evil; every man must fulfill their destiny to fulfill their destiny, regardless of what is there. Candomblé developed among the Afro-Brazilian community among Atlantic slaves in the 16th centuries. -
Haiti Unbound a Spiralist Challenge to the Postcolonial Canon H
HAITI UNBOUND A SPIRALIST CHALLENGE TO THE POSTCOLONIAL CANON H Both politically and in the fields of art and literature, Haiti has long been relegated to the margins of the so-called ‘New World’. Marked by exceptionalism, the voices of some of its AITI most important writers have consequently been muted by the geopolitical realities of the nation’s fraught history. In Haiti Unbound, Kaiama L. Glover offers a close look at the works of three such writers: the Haitian Spiralists Frankétienne, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and René Philoctète. While Spiralism has been acknowledged by scholars and regional writer- intellectuals alike as a crucial contribution to the French-speaking Caribbean literary tradition, the Spiralist ethic-aesthetic has not yet been given the sustained attention of a full-length U study. Glover’s book represents the first effort in any language to consider the works of the three Spiralist authors both individually and collectively, and so fills an astonishingly empty NBO place in the assessment of postcolonial Caribbean aesthetics. Touching on the role and destiny of Haiti in the Americas, Haiti Unbound engages with long- standing issues of imperialism and resistance culture in the transatlantic world. Glover’s timely project emphatically articulates Haiti’s regional and global centrality, combining vital ‘big picture’ reflections on the field of postcolonial studies with elegant analyses of the U philosophical perspective and creative practice of a distinctively Haitian literary phenomenon. Most importantly, perhaps, the book advocates for the inclusion of three largely unrecognized ND voices in the disturbingly fixed roster of writer-intellectuals who have thus far interested theorists of postcolonial (francophone) literature. -

RBSE 8(24): 524-621, Dez2009 ISSN 1676-8965 ARTIGO A Symbolic Analysis of Ritualistic Crime: The Forensics of Sacrifice 1 Dawn Perlmutter Resumo: O assassinato ritual inclui uma grande variedade de atos sagrados e temporais cometidos por grupos e por indivíduos e é atribuído o mais frequentemente aos praticantes de ideologias ocultas tais como o Satanismo, o Palo Mayombe, a Santeria e outras tradições mágicas, ou aos assassinos em série e aos sadistas sexuais que assassinam ritualmente as suas vítimas. Devido a muitas controvérsias legais, práticas e éticas o estudo da violência religiosa contemporânea está em sua infância. Não houve nenhum estudo empírico sério dos crimes ou das classificações ritualísticas que distingam adequadamente entre os homicídios rituais cometidos para sagrado versus motivações temporais. Este artigo é o resultado de minha pesquisa na fenomenologia da adoração da imagem, de rituais contemporâneos do sangue, e da violência sagrada. Reflete meu esforço contínuo para proteger as liberdades religiosas de membros de religiões alternativas ao ajudar profissionais da lei de lei na investigação de crimes ritualísticos. Abstract : Ritual murder includes a wide variety of both sacred and secular acts committed by groups and individuals and is most often attributed to practitioners of occult ideologies such as Satanism, Palo Mayombe, Santeria, and other magical traditions, or to serial killers and sexual sadists who ritually murder their victims. Due to many legal, practical, and ethical controversies the study of contemporary religious violence is in its infancy. There have been no serious empirical studies of ritualistic crimes or classifications that adequately distinguish between ritual homicides committed for sacred versus secular motivations.
