EDITOR OF FITZGERALD, HEMINGWAY, AND WOLFE PLIED HIS CRAFT By Rachel F. Van Hart, BA A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University 2015 Director: A. Bryant Mangum, PhD, Professor of English, Department of English Scholars and literary enthusiasts have struggled for decades to account for editor Maxwell Perkins’s unparalleled success in facilitating the careers of many of the early twentieth century’s most enduring and profitable writers, among them F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Thomas Wolfe. This study seeks to penetrate that mystery by dissecting Perkins’s editorial practice and examining how he navigated the competing tensions between commercial success and aesthetic integrity in various circumstances. At play in the construction of his literary legacy are prevailing perceptions of authorship, complex interpersonal relationships, and the inherent battle between art and commerce. Focusing on his day-to-day activities, it is apparent that Perkins was guided by a unique editorial double vision—the propensity to appreciate the aesthetic experience while retaining the critical detachment necessary to appraise a literary work from a commercial standpoint—when solving the paradoxical dilemmas inherent in modern publishing. v Introduction: An Editorial Legacy

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois to Dr. Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and Grace Hall Hemingway. The second of six children, Ernest enjoyed an adventurous boyhood, fishing and hunting with his father in the northern woods of Michigan. He attended Oak Park High School where he excelled in his classes, particularly English. He tried his hand at football and swimming, edited the school paper (the Trapeze), and contributed pieces to the school's literary magazine (the Tabula). After graduating high school, Ernest traveled to Kansas City and worked as a cub reporter for The Kansas City Star. In 1918, he began service as an ambulance driver for the Italian army. On July 8, he was wounded at Fossalta on the Italian Piave while delivering chocolates, cigarettes, and postcards to soldiers. He married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson on September 3, 1921. The newlyweds soon entered the literary community of Paris, living off of Hadley's trust fund and Ernest's pay as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star. The 1920's were extremely productive writing years for Hemingway. Three Stories and Ten Poems was published in 1923, In Our Time in 1925. In 1926, The Torrents of Spring and the widely successful novel, The Sun Also Rises were published.

Regardless if the Writing Center serves mostly undergraduates or graduates, the word “edit” has largely evolved to a narrow definition of copyediting or textual cleanup done by the author at the end of the writing process. Inversely, in trade publishing, editors and agents work with writers at multiple stages of production, providing editorial feedback in the form of reader’s reports and letters. Editing is a rich, intellectual skill of critically engaging with another’s text. What are the implications of differing literacies of editing for two fields dedicated to writing production? This dissertation examines the editorial practices of three leading 20th century editors: Maxwell Perkins, Katharine White, and Ursula Nordstrom.

Metaphorical Illness in Hemingway's Works Abstract Hemingway, through his characters, illustrates the many different genres and functions of disease. More than just inflictors of sadness and pain, disease and injury are part of the human condition. They are undeniable truths that give life to humanity, Hemingway’s characters, and Hemingway himself. As Hemingway writes in Death in the Afternoon, “…all stories, if continued far enough, end in death, and he is no true storyteller who would keep that from you.” Part of Hemingway’s art is acknowledging that there is no true cure. Vitality and death, contentedness and pain, disease and survival all coexist in Hemingway’s writing as one: life. The United States were launched towards an upswing of economic prosperity, which translated into social and cultural changes. As the 1920’s began, these shifts became particularly important for the development of the new role of women in society. Empowerment, financial independence and sexual liberation were some of the objectives to achieve by a section of the female community. Floridians convinced her to add Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings to her repertoire, and she moved to the state in order to do her research. She has since toured 43 states presenting Humanities programs on women authors (including five with Florida connections), homelessness in literature, Ernest Hemingway, America at War, Jim Crow Florida, and marriage equality. In 2004, she was named a Fellow in Florida Studies at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Her book about Willa Cather, Long Road from Red Cloud, was awarded the 2020 International Book Award for biography.
