~TTPk\. ' INIS-mf —127V3 Department of nuclear Medicine UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAT1D, JOHANNESBURG MESSAGE FROM THE CONGRESS CONVENORS What an exciting time it has been! The committee with whom we have been working have applied themselves to the unique task of organising a congress in the Kruger National Park. Indeed, from the moment the suggestion to have a congress in the Park was made, the committee suddenly galvanised into action, and this resulted in this most spectacular undertaking. The 1990 Nuclear Medicine Congress coincides with the great universal ecological awakening for the last decade of this millenium. It is therefore fitting that the Congress should be held in such a beautiful conservationist setting. While South Africa undoubtedly is equal to the rest of the world in its medical investigation and treatment of disease it still has a tremendous amount to learn from international experts such as are gathering for the Congress. We thank all the speakers both international and local for their willingness to participate. We would like to pay tribute, and thank all those who have given time and effort unstintingly towards the realisation of this creative Congress. PROF. J. LEVIN PROF. J.D. Dr van Wyk was a member of the SA Society of Nuclear Medicine, the SA Chemical Institute and the SA Association of Physicists in Medicine and Biology. He was also registered as a scientist with the SA Council of Natural Scientists. He joined the AEC during July 1974 and for 15 years played a leading role in the development and establishment of Tc-99m labelling kits and I-131-labelled compounds which are used in most of the South African Nuclear Medicine Departments. He was known internationally having presented various papers at International Conferences and a score of publications in International Journals. His contribution in the field of Nuclear Medicine included the publishing of various articles on new radiopharmaceuticals. The articles dealt with important new agents to study renal and hepatobiliary function; brain and cardiac perfusion and phaeochromocytoma. During the early eighties he made a very important contribution to Nuclear Medicine by the introduction of a unique process for the local production of I-131-labelled MIBG to be used for the diagnosis and therapy of phaeochromocytomas. Andre van Wyk was a beloved and respected colleague who made a permanent impression on all who knew him with his thoroughness and dedication. His contribution to the advancement of nuclear medicine in South Africa will always be remembered. DR P J Fourie Head: Isotope Production Centre Atomic Energy Corporation Pelindaba The Society of Nuclear Medicine would like to pay tribute to their colleague, Dr Adriaan Jakobus van Wyk and honour his memory.
