In between served as Superintending Archaeologist 'Antiquities, New Delhi, Eastern Circle, Calcutta, South- Western Circle, Aurangabad, Delhi Circle, Delhi and Excavation Branch, Delhi and Director of Publications and Monuments and also held the charge of Antiquity and Excavation & Exploration from time to time. The Indian subcontinent, which contains most of the world's wild tigers, represents only 11% of the world's tiger habitat. We estimate that there may be less than 1,600 tigers in the whole of the Indian subcontinent and the realistic maximum number of tigers that could be supported with its current habitat would be around 3,700. Tiger conservation in the Indian subcontinent faces a range of serious and complex threats, but we believe that most of these issues are still possible to address; India showed that this was possible in the 1970s when the survival of the tiger in the country also looked bleak. Here, we summarize some of the most important issues and suggest some means by which these may be addressed to secure the future of this majestic big cat. As the economic development takes place in a country the generation of the municipal solid waste increases. Not only has this but the characteristics of the municipal solid waste also changed. This study was conducted as a case study of the status of the municipal solid waste and its management in Allahabad city and a comparison is made with Varanasi and Kanpur city. Increasing population levels, rapid economic growth and rise in community living standard accelerates the generation rate of municipal solid waste in Indian cities. Improper management of MSW causes hazards to inhabitants. Geographic Information System has been used to analyze existing maps and data, to digitize the existing sanitary ward boundaries and to enter the data about the wards and disposal sites in Allahabad. In Allahabad the total quantity of MSW has been reported as 500 tonne/day, which is lesser than that of Varanasi, which produces 690 tonne per day. -

A STUDY OF THE EARLY VEDIC AGE IN ANCIENT INDIA FASALE M.K.* Department of Histroy, Abasaheb Kakade Arts College, Bodhegaon, Shevgaon- 414 502, MS, India *Corresponding Author: Email- [email protected] Received: December 04, 2012; Accepted: December 20, 2012 Abstract- The Vedic period (or Vedic age) was a period in history during which the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism, were composed. The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. CHAPTER-X "The movement of goods must imply the transit of ideas and it is the archaeologist's function to elicit the evidence and to draw the proper conclusion from it* (Mallowan, 1965: 1). 312 CONCLUSION We might now look back at the material presented in the preceding chapters and see what general observations can be made from the evidence as regards the (1) distribution of pre-Harappan culture, (2) its origin and (3) its survival. It must once again be emphasized that the most important pre-Harappan culture so far known is Kalibangan, even though we know only a little of the vast information recorded at this site. All other sites have to be viewed and arranged in chronological position in relation to Kalibangan. (A) TERMINOLOGY A sound name or spoliation is necessary for the pre-Harappan culture revealed at Kalibangan and the eleven explored sites on the Sarasvati-Ghaggar-Hakra river. At pre sent} scholars call it by several names such as Kot-Dijian, Kalibangan I and Sothi. Ghosh had in 1965 considered the names "Sarasvati", "Ghaggar", "Kalibangan I" and "Sothi" but he had preferred the last one. Thapar (1965: 136) on comparing the "component elements" from Sothi and Kalibangan I feels that the latter is a more appropriate name for the culture. It is evident from Chapter VII that no two sites have yielded an identical number of ceramic types and wares. This is probably due to our inadequate knowledge of these 313 sites and not to the inherent paucity of ceramic material on them. Hence, it becomes difficult to evaluate all the dis covered sites with Kalibangan I as their yardstick solely on account of the latter having been thoroughly explored and excavated. -

C hapter V Archaeology Of Roman Maritime Commerce in Peninsular India The impact of Roman maritime commerce on the socio-economic fabric of Early Historic India has been the theme of historical reconstructions from archaeology Perhaps the most forceful projection of this theme was made by (Ghosh 1989:132) who says with regard to the urbanization of peninsular India that the ‘early historical period of south and south-west India seems to have had its own peculiarities. A previous radiocarbon dating and stable isotope study of directly associated ungulate and human bone samples from Late Mesolithic burials at Schela Cladovei in Romania established that there is a freshwater reservoir effect of approximately 500 yr in the Iron Gates reach of the Danube River valley in southeast Europe. Using the δ15N values as an indicator of the percentage of freshwater protein in the human diet, the 14C data for 24 skeletons from the site of Lepenski Vir were corrected for this reservoir effect. The results of the paired 14C and stable isotope measurements provide evidence of substantial dietary change over the period from about 9000 BP to about 300 BP. The data from the Early Mesolithic to the Chalcolithic are consistent with a 2-component dietary system, where the linear plot of isotopic values reflects mixing between the 2 end-members to differing degrees. Typically, the individuals of Mesolithic age have much heavier δ15N signals and slightly heavier δ13C, while individuals of Early Neolithic and Chalcolithic age have lighter δ15N and δ13C values. Contrary to our earlier suggestion, there is no evidence of a substantial population that had a transitional diet midway between those that were characteristic of the Mesolithic and Neolithic. -

Mula Education Society's Arts, Commerce & Science College, Sonai, Newasa- 414105, MS, India *Corresponding Author: Email- [email protected] Received: November 01, 2012; Accepted: December 06, 2012 Abstract- Tools crafted by proto-humans that have been dated back two million years have been discovered in the northwestern part of the subcontinent. The ancient history of the region includes some of South Asia's oldest settlements and some of its major civilizations. The earli- est archaeological site in the subcontinent is the palaeolithic hominid site in the Soan River valley. Soanian sites are found in the Sivalik region across what are now India, Pakistan, and Nepal. The Mesolithic period in the Indian subcontinent was followed by the Neolithic period, when more extensive settlement of the subcontinent occurred after the end of the last Ice Age approximately 12,000 years ago. The first confirmed semipermanent settlements appeared 9,000 years ago in the Bhimbetka rock shelters in modern Madhya Pradesh, India. The eastern Uttar Pradesh has been the cradle of Indian Culture and civilization. It is the land associated with the story of Ramayana. The deductive portions of the Mahabharta are supposed to have got their final shape in this region. The area was the nerve centre of political, economic and religious upheavels of 6th century B.C. -
