All lots are offered subject to Morton & Eden Ltd.’s Conditions of Business and to reserves.

Estimates are published as a guide only and are subject to review. The actual hammer price of a lot may well be higher or lower than the range of figures given and there are no fixed “starting prices”.

A Buyer’s Premium of 15% is applicable to all lots in this sale. Excepting lots sold under Temporary Import rules which are marked with the symbol ‡ (see below), the Buyer’s Premium is subject to VAT at the standard rate (currently 17½%). Unless otherwise indicated, lots are offered for sale under the auctioneer’s margin scheme and VAT on the Buyer’s Premium is payable by all buyers.

Lots marked with the symbol ‡ have been imported from outside the European Union (EU) to be sold at auction under Temporary Import Rules. When released to buyers within the EU, including the UK, the buyer will become the importer and must pay import VAT at the rate of 5% on both the hammer price and the Buyer’s Premium. In effect this means that the invoice total for most EU buyers, including the Buyer’s Premium, will be at the level of the hammer price + 20.75% (i.e. just over 3% higher than the rate of 17.625% which typically applies to lots sold under the domestic Auctioneer’s Margin VAT scheme). Buyers outside the EU will not be required to pay temporary import VAT provided that satisfactory documentary evidence of exportation is obtained. Further information on this matter is available on request.

Morton & Eden Ltd. will be pleased to execute bids on behalf of those clients unable to attend the sale in person, subject to our Conditions of Business. All bids must be submitted in writing in good time and lots will always be purchased as cheaply as possible (depending on any other bids received, reserves and competition in the saleroom). This service is offered free of charge.

Morton & Eden Ltd. can supply quotations for the shipping of purchases, including transit insurance and VAT refund administration fees, and will assist in the application for any export licences which may be required. Buyers are reminded that it is their responsibility to comply with UK export regulations and with any local import requirements.

LIEUTENANT CHARLES NOEL ANDREWS GRAHAM, Mounted Infantry, 3rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, died 13 October 1901, at Middleburg, Transvaal, of wounds received in action near Koornfontein, 28 August 1901. He was the only son of Major-General Frederick William Graham (see lot 57). He was born in September 1879 and educated at Eton, where he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the School Corps, and Oxford. He entered the Northumberland Fusiliers from 5th Battalion Rifle Brigade in March 1900, being promoted to Lieutenant the following August. Soon after joining he was appointed assistant adjutant to his battalion. In February 1901, a mounted infantry company was formed; Lieutenant Graham joined it and proceeded to South Africa, serving with the company up to his death. While being carried from the field wounded and under heavy fire, he heard a shout: "Another man hit." In terrible pain and weak, he directed his bearers to leave him and look after the other wounded man; "His one thought," his commanding officer wrote, "was always for others."

Why Lieutenant Graham received the 1902 clasp is unclear, presumably due to an administrative error.

‘In April 1914…I accordingly joined the Highlanders without consulting my parents…’

‘The Battalion left Dunfermline for France on 2nd November 1914. I was left behind because of my youth and because the under age limit was 19. I actually left Dunfermline for France on my 19th birthday, 26th June 1915…‘

‘…The 1st Day of July 1916 was the first day of the battle of the Somme and shelling right along the front had commenced just before sunrise. The German artillery naturally replied and where I was I couldn't escape the German and our own shells, and to this day, I don't know whether it was a German or a British bullet that got me. My job along with other H.L.I. boys was to carry sand bags that had been filled in the mine along a distance of 10 to 15 yards to another man who handed them on to another, and so on until they were finally deposited in shell holes at night time. My last words before I was hit were; "I don't mind getting it in the arm or the leg, but I don't want it in the head." No sooner had these words been spoken than I got it in the head. The shrapnel bullet, which I still have in a drawer, pierced my steel helmet and, with a piece of my helmet lodged in my head. Fortunately for me, my pal, Tommy McKenzie, was nearby and he caught me as I was falling. He told me I was shouting "Mother, Mother." I recovered consciousness in the trench and remember having the bullet and piece of helmet taken from (my) head and walking down the communication to the Clearing Station. I had a cup of tea and was then placed on a stretcher, just to sleep away to unconsciousness. I ultimately recovered consciousness on the 15th day of July 1916 a full fortnight after I had been hit.’

‘Whilst having no occasion for any display of conspicuous gallantry, this N.C.O. has commanded a section most efficiently during the period Nov. 1944 – Jan. 1945. His leadership has been of a very high order; and during this time when opportunities of offensive action have been lacking he has by his example and cheerfulness maintained the best sort of morale in his section, and kept it together as a first-class fighting team.’

Afterwards he was able to put his flying experience to good use with the Air Transport Auxiliary - being too old for service with the R.A.F.- and had flown approximately 70 different types of aircraft by the end of hostilities. After the war he returned to aviation journalism and was appointed editor of the Light Plane in 1947. Bradshaw became an enthusiastic lobbyist on behalf of civil flying clubs and a frequent visitor to air shows. Tragically, on one such occasion in June 1950, he was killed in an accident while piloting a borrowed aircraft.

424 Navy Lists: Three, June 1834, June 1841, 1844, bound in one volume, in good condition £40-60 IMPORTANT QAJAR, PAHLAVI AND OTTOMAN ORDERS

‡425 Qajar, Order of the Lion and Sun (Homayoun), Military Division, superior grade of Agdas (the most sacred), gold and diamond set badge, of European manufacture (probably French), late 19th century, the central enamelled badge surrounded by three rows of diamonds, twelve diamond set rays around, with a diamond set five pointed star between each ray, surmounted with a diamond set crown with a floral aigrette above, 115mm, with pin-back suspension, extremely fine and of the highest rarity £8,000-12,000

Ex Sotheby's Islamic Art auction, 16 October 1997, lot 69. The badge is also featured in Qajar Portraits, Julian Raby, Azimuth editions, London 1999, fig. 106.

THE SUPREME ORDER OF AGDAS was instituted in 1860 as the highest grade of the Order of the Lion and Sun. It was intended for sovereigns and when worn by the Shah himself it was carried from a light blue sash. It was also awarded to Prime Ministers and Princes, when it was worn with a blue-edged green sash.

See also colour illustration on inside front cover. ‡426 Qajar, Order of the Lion and Sun (Homayoun), Military Division, third quarter of the 19th century, probably of Iranian manufacture, small sized superior grade of Agdas, in gold, the enamelled centre with lion, brandishing sword, and sun with three-pointed crown above, the ten rayed badge surmounted with a gold crown, 51mm, minor enamel damage, otherwise extremely fine and of the highest rarity £4,000-6,000

See also colour illustration on inside front cover.

‡427 Qajar, Order of the Lion and Sun (Homayoun), Civil Division, mid-19th century, of Iranian manufacture, superior grade breast badge, in gold, the centre bearing a lion couchant and sun in gold and enamels, surrounded by a gold ten rayed badge, 53.5mm, extremely fine and of the highest rarity £3,000-5,000

THE DECORATION OF THE IMPERIAL EFFIGY was first mentioned in the statutes of 1848 when it was incorporated into the Order of the Lion and Sun as a superior grade. Interestingly, this was the only Qajar order on which jewels were not forbidden by law: ‘The decoration with the Imperial Effigy alone is exempted from this rule, because of the respect due to the portrait of His Majesty, which demands that it should be surrounded by jewels.’ Under the same statutes, the Order was extended to foreigners of exalted rank. By the beginning of the 20th century, the order of the Imperial Effigy was extended to three classes, with three rows of diamonds surrounding the effigy in the 1st class, two in the 2nd and one row in the 3rd class.

Bestowed on George Baker of G. & A. Baker Ltd., Constantinople.

Baker, born in North London in 1822, originally trained as a gardener, working in various gardens before moving to the Exotic Nursery, Kings Road, Chelsea. In 1847 he secured a position assisting in the laying out of the garden at the British Embassy’s summer residence in Therapia on the Bosphorus and, on his outward journey took a collection of fruit trees destined for the Sultan, Abdul Medjid. Subsequently he worked on the garden at the new embassy at Constantinople (being rebuilt after a disastrous fire) opened a plant nursery and is credited with introducing wisteria to Turkey. During the 1850s he broadened his horizons, importing textiles from England with the aid of his brother James and in 1867 opened a second shop in partnership with a Mr Hayden. This partnership was later dissolved but the business prospered, expanding to become a department store, the first in Turkey, stocking an immense variety of imported goods including Baker’s Perfection - a lock stitch sewing machine, mangles, mackintoshes, and pianos which divided into four for ease of shipping. The business traded under the name of G. & A. Baker, the A standing for one of his sons, Arthur. Two other sons George Percival and James gave their names to the renowned firm of G.P. & J. Baker. By the early 20th century these family businesses had become pre-eminent in the fields of Oriental carpets and textiles employing designers such as C.F.A. Voysey and L.P Butterfield and supplying firms such as Liberty & Co. (From East to West Textiles from G.P & J. Baker, Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition 1984).

George Baker achieved considerable prominence in the British community living in Constantinople, and was a great supporter of the Turkish people. He built himself a house on the edge of the Bosphorus where he lived with his wife and large family, spending the summer on the island of Halki in the Sea of Marmora. His standing in the Ottoman Court was such that he was awarded several honours, including the Order of the Medjidjie. His wife too was honoured, the Sultan personally presenting her with a 12 pointed diamond brooch.

For Great War medals awarded to Baker’s grandsons, see lot 317.

SAMUEL VICKERY was born in Kenton, Devon, on August 1826. He enlisted in the army and was attested at Exeter on 10 August 1844. He appears to have enjoyed a chequered career: promoted Corporal in January 1847 he was then confined for a week in October 1848 and on his release was reduced to Private. The following month he was promoted to Corporal once more, but a year later he was confined again, this time for four days. Once again, he was reduced to Private on his release, and retained this rank for the remainder of his service. He nevertheless was given two good conduct rings, 5 November 1851 and 20 August 1854. Although his name is given on his service papers as Vicary, on his Statement of Service and Discharge Paper he clearly signs his name as Vickery.

In 1854 Vickery sailed with his battalion to the Crimea, and saw action in the battles of the Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann and the Siege of Sebastopol. Following these battles a hospital was established at Balaklava, and by June 1855 patients were being removed to better conditions at Scutari under Florence Nightingale’s care. He was appointed her orderly cum bodyguard and is mentioned by I.B. O'Malley's Florence Nightingale 1820-56.

Vickery was discharged from the Army at his own request on 3 December 1856, and returned to Devon where he worked as a labourer. He was killed in an accident at Thoverton Mills on 9 December 1871, when his leg was caught in a chaff cutting machine. In addition to a fractured leg he also suffered head injuries and died in the Devon and Exeter hospital shortly afterwards.

Military Cross: London Gazette, 1 January 1917.

MAJOR JOHN BENTCLIFFE GEORGE TAYLOR was born in 1882. In early 1901 he volunteered for the 7th Imperial Yeomanry at Doncaster, serving in the 4th Battalion. After the Boer War he remained in South Africa, working for the New Cape Central Railway. On the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 he enlisted as a Captain in 17th (Western Province) Mounted Rifles, taking part in the invasion of German South West Africa and the capture of Bethany at the beginning of 1915.

Following the successful conclusion of the South West African campaign, he returned to England, joining the 13th Battalion Rifle Brigade, where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 11 August. On July 10 1916 the 13th Battalion, as part of the 34th Division, was ordered to launch an attack upon the German trenches and, at heavy cost, managed to capture the enemy position. News then arrived that the decision to attack was a mistake and the order was given to cancel it. The losses for the action were assessed at 20 officers and 380 other ranks. For his part in the action Lieutenant Taylor was recommended for the Military Cross. In April 1918 he was placed in temporary command of the Battalion and on 29 October 1920 he relinquished his commission, retaining the rank of Major.

After the war he returned to South Africa, working for the newly established Benguela Railway. On the outbreak of the Second World War he volunteered for service with the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps, with the substantive rank of Lieutenant. Major Taylor died in 1960.

WARRANT OFFICER ROWLAND MIDDLETON was killed on 11 September 1944 during the raid on Darmstadt when he was 21 years old. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Middleton was born in Hunslet, West Yorkshire, educated at Jack Lane School and later joined the Air Training Corps. On leaving school he was employed as an upholsterer by Myers Brothers in Whitehouse Street, Hunslet. He joined the Air Force at the beginning of the war, training as an air gunner with No. 44 course, 4 Squadron. Four newspaper cuttings, three referring to the award of the D.F.M., the other concerning his parents receiving the D.F.M. at the investiture

A handwritten letter from Flight Sergeant Middleton from which the following extracts are taken: …At…? hours on Sunday we "pulled out" of the aerodrome and set off for the North West coast of Germany… …then later on he said "Here's Hamburg boys and good luck to the poor devils" (meaning the Jerry). …We then drew over a bank of clouds and approached our target. Then one by one, searchlight beams split the sky, here and there were lights just like a roman candle… …the ack-ack started, tracers making long "streamers" in the air and flaming onions coming straight for us and every time I thought they were going to hit us… …Down below in the light of the flares I could see our objective which was the bridge over the Elbe and the dry docks… …Then the pilot shut off his engines and prepared to "make our run in". And then the automatic bomb doors opened showing the bombs… …Bombs gone! And then there was a terrific flash of light which lit up the whole aircraft… …Suddenly, somewhere at the back of me I could hear guns crackling and then the beam guns on the left hand side of me opened fire and I knew that the Jerry had been pretty near me just then… …we went straight into some clouds. When we came out again we had lost the Jerry… …We then made our way back to the dry docks which were lit up by the bridge we had bombed and set on fire. Then all we did was dive and let the whole lot go, we literally plastered it with bombs and when we turned for home the whole issue was ablaze… …On the way back over Brunsbuttel one of the other kites (manned by a Polish crew) caught a packet in the "blind spot" and we knew they'd "had it." The port engine had been wrenched from its bed which tore off the whole wing… …After we had crossed the coast I sighted seven fighter aircraft on the starboard which I reported immediately. And which I later identified as Messerschmidtt (sic) B.F. 109s. Then we immediately sped for what cover we could find and there were only a few clouds… …We then checked up on the gun positions ready for "action". It was then the observer found that the whole rear turret had been shot up in mid-air taking the gunner with it. Then I think I felt a little sick. We finally took cover in the clouds and it was during that time I managed to contact a patrol of Lockheed "Hudson" aircraft patrolling the . When they arrived the "Jerry" returned for home. I called them yellow for quitting not thinking that we had been "running" to save our necks a few minutes before… …It just sounds like some sort of fairy story and not a bit like anything that really happened, but I suppose this is nothing to what I will see in time."

462 A Fine Bomber Command Distinguished Flying Medal Group: Four, 123636 (1177587) Flying Officer R. E. V. Pugh, 103 Squadron, R.A.F, Distinguished Flying Medal, George VI type 1 (1177587 Sgt.), 1939-45 and Air Crew Europe Stars, War Medal, with original envelope and riband bar for the Distinguished Flying Medal, box of issue and forwarding slip for the Stars and War Medal and Buckingham Palace Condolence Slip in original envelope, extremely fine (4) £3,000-3,500

Distinguished Flying Medal: London Gazette, 4 August 1942 (one of seven awards to 103 Squadron):

‘This N.C.O. has displayed superb qualities as a Captain having taken part in 32 sorties, of which 25 were as Captain. He has carried out these attacks with consistent skill and courage. Throughout he has set a high standard of Captaincy. His coolness and determination, frequently in the face of strong enemy opposition, have been an inspiration to all. One night, returning from a raid on the Ruhr, his aircraft was attacked by a night fighter. His hydraulics were shot through and the undercarriage came down and the bomb doors fell open. Despite this, he handled his aircraft skilfully, giving his rear gunner a chance to fire a burst at the fighter. After two attacks the fighter broke away. Sgt. Pugh then brought his aircraft back to base and made a very good "wheels up" landing. His enthusiasm, skill and fearlessness in the face of danger and his dogged determination have caused him to be selected for a number of difficult and more dangerous tasks and has carried these out magnificently. His devotion to duty and his fine fighting spirit fully deserve personal recognition and I strongly recommend him for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.’

Remarks by Station Commander (as included in the lot):

‘This N.C.O., during his 200 hours operational flying with 103 Squadron, has shown that he has outstanding qualities of guts, determination and a complete disregard for his own personal safety. He allows nothing to deter him from hitting his target. As a result, he has always been the first selection to undertake any new or particularly dangerous operations. His offensive spirit and skilful captaincy have been an inspiration to the squadron. I have watched this N.C.O.'s progress and have no hesitation in recommending him for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.’

PILOT OFFICER RICHARD ELWYN VAUGHAN PUGH was killed on 26 November 1943, aged 29, when his Lancaster, J.B. 527 ‘B’ was shot down during a raid over Berlin. He is buried in the Berlin Military Cemetery.

During 26/27 November raid on Berlin 28 Lancasters were lost with 103 Squadron suffering the highest percentage losses in Group 1 Lancaster squadrons. Much of Berlin was bombed at this time including the city’s Zoo thus allowing many large and dangerous animals to escape.

Victoria Cross: London Gazette: 6 Jan. 1919:

‘… For most conspicuous bravery and initiative in attack on 23 Oct. 1918, during the advance against the Bois l’Evêque, when his company was held up by a line of enemy machine guns in the sunken road near the Moulin J.-Jacques. Private Miles alone, and on his own initiative, went forward under exceptionally heavy fire, located a machine gun, shot the gunner, and put the gun out of action. Observing another gun near by, he again advanced alone, shot the gunner, rushed the gun, and captured the team of eight. Finally, he stood up and beckoned to his company who, acting on his signals, were enabled to work round the rear of the line and to capture 16 machine guns, one officer and 50 other ranks. It was due to the courage, initiative and entire disregard of personal safety shown by this very gallant soldier that the company was enabled to advance at a time when any delay would have jeopardised seriously the whole operation.’

FRANCIS GEORGE MILES was born at Clearwell, in the Forest of Dean, on 9 July 1896. Only 5’ 4’’ in height, he became a miner employed by the Princess Royal Colliery Company. He enlisted in the 9th Gloucesters in December 1914 and went to France for the first time in September 1915. Unable to go to Salonika with his battalion owing to a poisoned foot, he was subsequently attached to the 8th Gloucesters and also to the Royal Engineers, where his trade served him well in tunnelling operations. In July 1917 he was wounded when blown up and buried by a mine explosion and was invalided home, recuperating at Halifax (Yorkshire). Keen to resume active service on his recovery, he was sent to Italy to join the 5th Gloucesters, remaining there until the regiment was sent to reinforce the 25th Division in France (in August, 1918). He was the first and remains, to date, the only private soldier in the Glosters to receive the Victoria Cross.

After the war Miles returned home where the parishioners of Clearwell, stated in a 1918 newspaper report to have produced more soldiers in proportion to its size than any other village in England, presented him with a gold watch (see lot 466). He joined the Territorial Army (Monmouth Regiment) for a spell in the 1920s before re-enlisting with the Glosters on the outbreak of the Second World War. He was finally discharged in June 1940 with the testimonial ‘A man of excellent character clean and willing who deserves well of his country’.

Miles attended many V.C. reunions, notably the 1956 Centenary Review. He died in 1961 and was buried at Clearwell, where a new headstone was dedicated at a ceremony on 22 May 2004; his medals were carried on that occasion by his son, the late Christopher Miles.

The lot is sold with the following additional items (see also lots 464-466 below):
