The Bears Pit Have Not Tested Multiplayer Neither Any of the Editors Subject: Heads up on v1.13 on Linux + wine Posted by grodrigues on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 21:12:43 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message This may interest some people, so I have decided to post my findings on ja2 v1.13 on linux. In Kubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx with the latest wine (1.2rc2), jagged alliance 2 (gold version) plus the v1.13 mod (latest - by early june 2010 - single-click installer) essentially works. Here are some more details: 1. The installation of ja2 went OK. I have *not* tested the game. 2. I made no alterations to wine's default config options neither did I used winetricks. 3. The installation of v1.13 also went OK. Since wine's file dialog cannot "see" hidden directories, I had to extract the files to some temp dir and then copy everything to the ja2 folder (overwriting everything, etc.). 4. Starting ja2 from the icon did not work. I also got a runtime error of the form Function vfs::COpenReadFile::COpenReadFile could not open Ja2_Settings.INI The indicated file does not exist, so this *may* be a problem with the mod itself. 5. Starting ja2 from the command line did work. At first, the screen was all fuzzy and then the Sirtech logo appeared, but in a clunky way with frequent hiccups in the music. As soon as the main screen appears all is fine. 6. The line command cursor from the Konsole just froze over ja2. Solution: just drag the cursor to the bottom, before starting the game. 7. If I tampered with the INI settings and choose the 1024x768 resolution all I got was a black screen. Solution: don't, just stick to 800x600. 8. Starting the game, the image was uncentered. Solution: I had to hack directly with the monitor buttons to "recenter" the image. Somewhat misteriously, in subsequent plays this problem disappeared. After all this, you may well wonder why do I say ja2 works. Well, the game is *perfectly playable* with no significant problems, only the occasional crash (but very rare and not reproducible), the occasional UI glitch, etc. Most likely, this is due to the mod itself that is still being actively developed. Just save often and you will be OK. In the one game I played, the coolness factor is at 6 or 7 (can't quite remember) with Drassen, Cambria and Chitzena occupied, as well as 3 SAM sites. Visited Estoni, San Mona (but have not dealt with Kingpin yet), etc. Page 1 of 5 ---- Generated from The Bears Pit Have not tested multiplayer neither any of the editors. Both the ini and xml editors need the .NET framework to work. Presumedly any standard text editor will be able to edit these files. Note: forgot the most important thing. Thanks to everyone that works on this mod, as it really breathes new life in ja2. Regards, G. Rodrigues Subject: Re: Heads up on v1.13 on Linux + wine Posted by Nemem9aa on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 07:18:23 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message Gentoo linux, wine 1.1.43. Ja2-1.13 and Ja2-1.13-wildfire are working just fine. I don`t even have problems with 1024*768 resolution. There are occasionally crashes, but i think that just game, not wine. I finished playing at least 2 times, so it is perfectly playable. I believe the lag was noted on WineHQ's compatiblity list entry for Jagged Alliance 2. Subject: Re: Heads up on v1.13 on Linux + wine Posted by grodrigues on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 11:03:04 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message wil473Has the severe lag with the mouse and firing in my own experience (Ubuntu 9.10, Wine from six months ago) been resolved? I believe the lag was noted on WineHQ's compatiblity list entry for Jagged Alliance 2. No cursor problems for me besides the one noted in 6. My machine is relatively old (AMD 1.5 Ghz, 1.5G ram, 128M radeon 9200 PRO), but the game is also very old with very low specs (by today's standards), so I have the impression that it should run "faster". But this is just an impression, and the game is perfectly playable as it is anyway. Regards. G. Rodrigues Page 2 of 5 ---- Generated from The Bears Pit Subject: Re: Heads up on v1.13 on Linux + wine Posted by Fozzie on Sun, 27 Jun 2010 09:30:59 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message I did a somewhat unusual test - I simply copied my install of ja2 from my windows to the linux partition (Ubuntu 10.04) and the game works as far as I can tell (haven't really played much yet). The cursor lag and the sometimes occuring issue with the GTK-pointer showing in the game could be prevented by not allowing the window manager to control the application in winecfg. The only downside is that the graphics are a little bit fuzzy, at least outside the tactical sector view. But it's tolerable. Subject: Re: Heads up on v1.13 on Linux + wine Posted by kunderez on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 22:02:22 GMT View Forum Message <> Reply to Message I didn't have luck running ja2 on wine... here is what I did and experienced... 1) I installed Jagged Alliance 2 Gold in wine -> installation was OK 2) I tried running ja2.exe and screen update just stopped and mouse cursor disappeared... I managed to restore screen update by switching workspace to another and back ( by using keyboard shortcuts ) and that revealed hidden "Jagged Alliance 2" application in task list and also revealed "Program error" titled window that says the following... Quote:The program ja2.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check http://appdb.winehq.org for tips about running this application. If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been reported yet, you can report it at http://bugs.winehq.org. I also noticed some crash report files appearing in Jagged Alliance installation folder ( 'Crash Report_[day]_[month]_[year]___[hour]_[min].txt' ) and I uploaded contents of one of those files to http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=ye0etaHn ( I hope that helps resolving the problem ). I also uploaded Wine output and it can be found from http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=cMSJTAP9 After few hours of depressive googling and seeing "segmentation fault" message on glxinfo output, I figured out that this might be radeon driver/configuration error... and may have something to do with some bs-crap called "DRI" ( direct rendering ). Latest xorg log can be found from from http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=N6SxSMqg 3) I applied Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 update ( 'JA2 1.13 3356 exe SVN@1227 Full' downloaded from http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218334/Downloads ) 4) I tried running ja2.exe and same thing occurs... • The Linux Gamers' HOWTO
The Linux Gamers’ HOWTO Peter Jay Salzman Frédéric Delanoy Copyright © 2001, 2002 Peter Jay Salzman Copyright © 2003, 2004 Peter Jay SalzmanFrédéric Delanoy 2004-11-13 v.1.0.6 Abstract The same questions get asked repeatedly on Linux related mailing lists and news groups. Many of them arise because people don’t know as much as they should about how things "work" on Linux, at least, as far as games go. Gaming can be a tough pursuit; it requires knowledge from an incredibly vast range of topics from compilers to libraries to system administration to networking to XFree86 administration ... you get the picture. Every aspect of your computer plays a role in gaming. It’s a demanding topic, but this fact is shadowed by the primary goal of gaming: to have fun and blow off some steam. This document is a stepping stone to get the most common problems resolved and to give people the knowledge to begin thinking intelligently about what is going on with their games. Just as with anything else on Linux, you need to know a little more about what’s going on behind the scenes with your system to be able to keep your games healthy or to diagnose and fix them when they’re not. 1. Administra If you have ideas, corrections or questions relating to this HOWTO, please email me. By receiving feedback on this howto (even if I don’t have the time to answer), you make me feel like I’m doing something useful. In turn, it motivates me to write more and add to this document.

  • Applying Dynamic Scripting to Jagged Alliance 2
Department of Computer Science Knowledge Engineering Group Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Johannes Fürnkranz Diploma Thesis Applying Dynamic Scripting to “Jagged Alliance 2” Author: Manuel Ladebeck September 2008 ii Declaration of authenticity I hereby declare that I wrote this thesis myself without sources other than those indicated herein. All parts taken from published and unpublished scripts are indicated as such. This thesis has not been previously presented as an examination paper in this or a similar form. Darmstadt, September 2008 Manuel Ladebeck iii Abstract Many modern computer games are fairly complex, with a vast amount of game states and a high degree of randomization. Most of those games fail to provide an adequate artificial intelligence which leads to the player being more adept than the computer controlled agents after a short amount of time. As a consequence, the developers need to artificially strengthen the computer controlled agents to keep up the challenge. Ultimately the player may loose interest in the game because he feels that the odds are not even. A real adaptive artificial intelligence would go a long way towards immersive digital games. However the above mentioned characteristics of todays computer games raise some issues when trying to apply standard procedures known from machine learning and data mining. The desired learning processes need to be fast and reliable. An algorithm named 'Dynamic Scripting' has been developed by Pieter Spronck specifically for the deployment in modern computer games. This thesis covers the application of 'Dynamic Scripting' in 'Jagged Alliance 2', a commercially developed and distributed computer game. After explaining the game's basics and the mechanisms of the learning algorithm, the implemented artificial intelligence is evaluated thoroughly.

  • Jagged Alliance: Unfinished Business 1 Rules and Limitations
OVERVIEW – GETTING STARTED The Jagged Alliance 2:Unfinished Business map editor is the very tool that was used by the developers to create Jagged Alliance 2 and Jagged Alliance 2:Unfinished Business (JA2:UB). With this tool you will be able to expand the main campaign, adding new custom sector maps to the country of Tracona, creating your own version of a cam- paign that contains new combat challenges and rewards. The “Set JA2UB Campaign” Utility As you can probably imagine, there will be different campaigns made by various Jagged Alliance 2:UB players. To simplify things, each set of these campaigns is treated as separate version of the game, and therefore the related map files are stored in separate folders. To make it easy to manage, we have included a utility program en- titled Set JA2UB Campaign that allows you to select which cam- paign you wish to play or create. This utility will allow you to choose an existing campaign (either the original or a custom version), or create a new campaign folder. The utility will also allow you to view a description of the campaign, or create one. Jagged Alliance: Unfinished Business 1 Rules and Limitations As you plan your own modifications and additions to the country of Tracona, keep in mind what you can or cannot do. You can do the following: · Name the campaign. · Add a custom map for each sector in the JA2:UB Tracona country map (see exceptions) · Replace a pre-existing campaign map with a custom map (see exceptions) · Block a pre-existing campaign map from being playable (see exceptions) ·

ARTIFACTS, ACTORS AND INTERACTIONS IN THE CROSS-PROJECT COORDINATION PRACTICES OF OPEN-SOURCE COMMUNITIES ABSTRACT While there has been some research on coordination in FLOSS, such research has focused on coordination within a project or within a group. The area of cross-project coordination, where shared goals are tenuous or non-existent, has been under-researched. This paper explores the question of how multiple projects working on a single piece of existing software in the FLOSS environment can coordinate. Using the “ordering systems” lens, we examine this question via a cross-case analysis of four projects performed on the open source game Jagged Alliance 2 (JA2) in the forum Bear’s Pit. Our main findings are that: (1) Ongoing cross-project ordering systems are influenced by the materiality of development artifacts. (2) The emergent trajectory of cross-project ordering systems is influenced by affordances that emerge from the interaction between the goals and desires of the project team building the development artifact, and the materiality of the development artifact. (3) When two parties need to coordinate in the ordering system, all or almost all coordination effort can be borne by a single party. Furthermore, over time, emergent FLOSS projects bear more coordination effort than stable, mature projects. Keywords: Cross-project coordination, materiality, ordering systems, open-source Introduction Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects represent a new form of organizing where structures are flattened and distributed and boundaries are fluid and permeable (Kellogg et al., 2006, Ljungberg, 2000). Work in FLOSS projects is distributed, highly modularized and largely self-organized (Crowston et al., 2007).
