One of the defining business conditions of 2009 was the effect of the world economic crisis. Most of our mem- bers experienced lower sales and more difficult bank and financing conditions. Many were forced to pursue cost- cutting measures in order to limit losses and conserve cash liquidity which, in turn, negatively impacted the businesses of their suppliers. AmCham offered both for- mal and informal consultations for our members, direct support for their businesses and modified internal poli- cies, all aimed at easing the economic pressures on our members and helping our members share strategies for dealing with the economic downturn. In a year when most businesses aggressively reduced their costs, virtu- ally all AmCham members maintained their memberships in AmCham, indicating the high value they place on our association and services.

Activity of the Special Operation Executive in Romania via Turkey, 1943 - 1944 Liliana Elena Boșcan1 Abstract The Anschluss of March 1938 marks the point at which Hitler’s designs for Europe became clearer to Britain and greater prominence was given to considerations about Romania. Between 1938 and 1941 Britain’s only weapon against German ambitions in countries which fell into Hitler’s orbit were military subversive operations — the destruction of the oilfields and the interdiction of supply routes by the Danube and the rail network — but S.O.E. ((Special Operation Executive) failed. Between 1941 and 1944, the S.O.E. (Special Operation Executive) activity was centred on the revival of wireless contacts with Iuliu Maniu, head of the National Peasant Party, aimed at persuading through him Marshal Ion Antonescu to abandon the Axis and the provision of a channel of communication of armistice terms by the Allies (Autonomous Mission, December 1943). The S.O.E. has taken steps to create a reliable communication channel between S.O.E. residents in Istanbul and Bucharest. A network was made through Turkey legations or through emissaries sent to Istanbul, Ankara and Cairo, or by radio broadcast and by agents launched with parachute. Annals of the Academy of Romanian Scientists Series on History and Archaeology ISSN 2067-5682 Volume 10, Number 1/2018 17 MARCH 27, 1918, THE UNION OF BESSARABIA WITH ROMANIA, THE FIRST LINK IN THE MAKING OF THE GREATER ROMANIA Jipa ROTARU Abstract. There are, in the history of peoples, events of great significance and national value. Such an event was on March 27, 1918, when under extreme conditions, under foreign occupation, the Country Council (the legislative body of Bessarabia elected by the people) decided to unite the Romanian province between the Pruth and Dniester with the mother country, Romania. The act of the union of Bessarabia with the country was reckoned by the great historian Gheorghe Buzatu, one of the astral moments of Romanian becoming, along with January 24, 1859, May 9, 1877 and December 1, 1918. The special significance of this event consisted in the fact that, the Union of the Bessarabian people, freely expressed in March 1918, opened the series of three fundamental moments, the plebiscite assemblies in Chişinău, Cernăuţi and Alba Iulia, through which the Romanian people made their full national unity. The Revolutionary-National Movement in Bessarabia in the years 1917-1918, which culminated in the return of the Romanian land between the Pruth and Dniester, self-embedded in the Tsarist Empire more than 100 years ago, during the First World War, in close connection with the Russian revolution that broke out in the spring of 1917, but also with the extensive upheavals in the struggle for self- determination of the oppressed peoples of the three empires: Tsarist, Austro- Hungarian and Ottoman.

  • SAMUEL HILL: His Life, His Friends, and His Accomplishments
SAMUEL HILL: His life, his friends, and his accomplishments “We have found the Garden of Eden. It is the garden spot of the world — the most beautiful country I have ever seen. I took Mary up on top of the mountain and showed her the kingdom of the earth. Just think of a place where you can raise apples, peaches, quinces, corn, potatoes, watermelons, nineteen varieties of grapes, plums, apricots, strawberries, walnuts, almonds and everything except oranges . I am going to incorporate a company called ‘The Promised Land Company’.” (October 18, 1907, from a letter sent by Samuel Hill to his brother, Dr. Richard Junius Hill.) The Promised Land Company, later known as Maryhill, Washington, eventually failed due to irrigation difficulties and a world war. Left in this wake was a huge Grecian-doric castle museum, dedicated to international art; a replica of England’s Stonehenge, dedicated to peace; and a colorful history of our people: a queen, a Folies Bergere denseuse, a sugar heiress, and an empire builder. The story of the castle begins in 1913 and continues today. Samuel Hill executed plans for the building of a castle on a rocky promontory high above the second largest river in the United States. Mr. Hill, a strange mixture of cosmopolite and farmer, intended to use his castle as a residence for entertaining illustrious friends and royalty. He was anxious to show them the beauties of the West and to return, in a good manner, the hospitality that had been extended to him. For his good friend, King Albert, Samuel had the Belgian crest engraved above the doors.

  • Rincess Marie of Romania – Her Letters from the Balkan War
JOURNAL of Humanities, Culture and Social Sciences, Vol. 2, No. 1, 2016 ISSN 2393 – 5960; ISSN – L 2393-5960, pp. 111-129 rincess Marie of Romania – her Letters from the Balkan War P Sorin Cristescu, Ph.D. Universitatea “Spiru Haret” Bucharest, Romania [email protected] Abstract The most dangerous enemy of the Romanian Army in the 1913 campaign was cholera. That gave Princess Marie the opportunity to prove to the whole country for the first time and to herself her extraordinary qualities of best organizer in the most dangerous place of the war the cholera camp at Zimnicea. Key words: Balkan wars, cholera camp, flying hospital. All of the biographers who have written about Queen Marie of Romania consider that the Crown Princess always wanted her people’s love. But it was during the participation of Romania at the so-called Second Balkan War 10th July-10th August 1913 when she discovered the fulfilment of earning in selfless service. It was the turning point in her life (Elsberry, 1972: 91; the same point of view is adopted in Pakula, 1984: 205–208). The future queen explained later the events at the end of the Romanian Army campaign in Bulgaria that put her into contact with the horrors of the war: “It resulted in no battles, but whilst on enemy's ground our troops encountered as deadly a foe as cannons—cholera. I was brought into sudden contact with this terrible scourge when I went to visit the troops and the Red Cross hospitals scattered along the Danube. I cannot help looking upon this as a turning point in my life.

  • Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu Against King Carol
Reluctant Allies? Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu against King Carol II of Romania Introduction Iuliu Maniu is today regarded as the principle upholder of democratic and constitutional propriety in interwar Romania. As leader of the Romanian National Peasant Party throughout much of the interwar period and the Second World War, he is generally considered to have tried to steer Romania away from dictatorship and towards democracy. Nevertheless, in 1947 Maniu was arrested and tried for treason together with other leaders of the National Peasant Party by the communist authorities. The charges brought against Maniu included having links to the ‘terrorist’ and fascist Romanian Legionary movement (also known as the Iron Guard). The prosecutors drew attention not only to the entry of former legionaries into National Peasant Party organizations in the autumn of 1944, but also to Maniu’s electoral non- aggression pact of 1937 with the Legionary movement’s leader, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu. The pact had been drawn up to prevent the incumbent National Liberal government manipulating the elections of December 1937. Maniu had subsequently acted as defence a witness at Codreanu’s trial in 1938. 1 Since the legionaries were regarded by the communists as the agents of Nazism in Romania, Maniu was accordingly accused of having encouraged the growth of German influence and fascism in Romania.2 Maniu was sentenced to life imprisonment and died in Sighet prison in 1953. Possibly no single act of Maniu’s interwar career was more condemned within Romanian communist historiography than his electoral pact with the allegedly Nazi- 1 Marcel-Dumitru Ciucă (ed.), Procesul lui Iuliu Maniu, Documentele procesului conducătorilor Partidului Naţional Ţărănesc, 3 volumes, Bucharest, 2001, vol.

  • Continuities and Changes of Europe in Romanian National Discourse
Lund UniversityLund University STMV 23, 2017 PoliticalPolitical Science Science Department Department Superviser: Magnus Jerneck MasterMaster of European Of European Affairs Affairs Superviser: STVM 23, Magnus 2017 Jerneck Continuities and Changes of Europe in Romanian National Discourse A thematic analysis of Romania`s chiefs of state speeches, between 1931 and 2016 Mihail Nejneru Lund University Political Science Department Superviser: Magnus Jerneck Master of European Affairs STVM 23, 2017 Abstract There are several problems when studying, as this thesis, the interplay between the concepts of Europe and of nation, in an official discourse of a state. One is that these concepts are largely seen as being in a dichotomous position. This research argues about the importance of changing the perception about the various way the concepts can relate to each other. The study considers the representations of the nation and of Europe as correlated. Consequently, the idea of Europe is modified over time according to the political culture type. The peculiarities of the case selection: Romania, as two violent regime changes, amplifies the effects of this multi faced process of conferring meanings to Europe. First, the communist regime crafted its own national narrative by mixing soviet supranational elements with a strong nationalistic rhetoric. This was done also with the use of Protochronism, a Romanian term, describing the process to ascribe, with the use of questionable data and by questionable interpretations, an idealised past to the country. Second, the post-communist elites could not decide what stance should be adopted towards pre-communist and communist regimes.
