Spring/Summer 2015 Steidl Spring/Summer 2015 — “For the Thousandth Time, It Must Be Said That Pictures Speak for Themselves, Wordlessly, Visually—Or They Fail — Spring/Summer 2015 Steidl Spring/Summer 2015 — “For the thousandth time, it must be said that pictures speak for themselves, wordlessly, visually—or they fail. But if those pictures chose to speak, they might well use the words George Santayana once wrote in a small preface about the United States: … the critic and artist too have their rights, … Moreover, I suspect that my feel- ings are secretly shared by many people in America, natives and foreigners, who may not have the courage or the occasion to express them frankly … In the classical and romantic tradition of Europe, love, of which there was very little, was supposed to be kindled by beauty, of which there was a great deal; perhaps moral chemistry may be able to reverse this operation, and in the future and in America it may breed beauty out of love.” Extract from Walker Evans’s review of Robert Frank’s The Americans in U.S. Camera Annual 1958 The black and white photos by KOTO BOLOFO are taken from his upcoming book PAPERMAKING, which documents production at the Hahnemühle paper mill in Dassel, Germany, very close to Göttingen (see page 121). The cover photo is taken from the book KHALID AL THANI, LANGUAGE WITHOUT WORDS (see page 53). • This Book Is a Compendium of New Wave Posters. It Is Organized Around the Designers (At Last!)
“This book is a compendium of new wave posters. It is organized around the designers (at last!). It emphasizes the key contribution of Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe, and beyond. And it is a very timely volume, assembled with R|A|P’s usual flair, style and understanding.” –CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING, FROM THE INTRODUCTION 2 artbook.com French New Wave A Revolution in Design Edited by Tony Nourmand. Introduction by Christopher Frayling. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses—in France and internationally—helped to create this style, and in so doing found themselves at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. French New Wave: A Revolution in Design celebrates explosive and groundbreaking poster art that accompanied French New Wave films like The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Featuring posters from over 20 countries, the imagery is accompanied by biographies on more than 100 artists, photographers and designers involved—the first time many of those responsible for promoting and portraying this movement have been properly recognized. This publication spotlights the poster designers who worked alongside directors, cinematographers and actors to define the look of the French New Wave. Artists presented in this volume include Jean-Michel Folon, Boris Grinsson, Waldemar Świerzy, Christian Broutin, Tomasz Rumiński, Hans Hillman, Georges Allard, René Ferracci, Bruno Rehak, Zdeněk Ziegler, Miroslav Vystrcil, Peter Strausfeld, Maciej Hibner, Andrzej Krajewski, Maciej Zbikowski, Josef Vylet’al, Sandro Simeoni, Averardo Ciriello, Marcello Colizzi and many more.

  • Iko Uwais, Stuber's Villain, Is Hollywood's Next Big Action Star
SUBSCRIBE US Iko Uwais Is Hollywood’s Next Big Martial Arts Star. Just Ask Keanu Reeves and Mark Wahlberg. Hollywood has an action aversion: turning well-choreographed ght scenes into quick-cutting, hand-held cacophonies. Iko Uwais hopes his lms will change that. BY JOSH ST. CLAIR JUL 12, 2019 RENDHA RAIS hen J.J. Abrams resurrected Star Wars, he wanted excitement—and actors who would make the new films fun. For a particular scene in The Force Awakens, when raider assassins board and attempt to hijack the Millennium Falcon from their W galactic target, Han Solo, Abrams wanted action—and actors who could make it feel real. Abrams called on Iko Uwais. It was a fan’s desire as much as it was a director’s request. Abrams, like many in Hollywood, discovered Uwais through his work on The Raid: Redemption, Welsh director Gareth Evans’ Indonesian martial arts film equally inspired by Die Hard, an M.I.A. music video, and the Malay self-defense art form Silat. The Raid became one of the most celebrated action movies of the century and featured hand-to-hand combat to render Jason Bourne a haymaker-throwing street brawler and John Wick a novice MMA fighter. (John Wick star Keanu Reeves was so enthralled by Uwais, he cast him in a small role for his directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi.) Abrams wanted that action. So he called and cast Uwais and Raid co-star Cecep Arif Rahman to hunt down Han. He also asked Uwais to choreograph a lightsaber fight for later in the film.

  • Golden Decade Info Sheet
THE GOLDEN DECADE Photography at the California School of Fine Arts 1945-1955 Shortly after World War II the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) in San Francisco hired renowned photographer Ansel Adams to establish one of the rst ne art photography departments in the United States. The CSFA's photography program, established by Adams and taught by Minor White, also included as guest instructors, some of the great photographers of the time. Top names such as Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Lisette Model, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, and Homer Page. The newly enacted G.I. Bill enabled all veterans to attend the college or trade school of their choice. For many this opened the door to an educational opportunity which would have otherwise been unavailable to them. This exhibition showcases the work of some of those early students. The accompanying book The Golden Decade focuses on CSFA’s photography department between 1945 and 1955, and is the result of a collaboration between three former students of Adams and White, William Heick, Ira H. Latour, C. Cameron Macauley, and editors (and local residents) Ken Ball and his wife Victoria Whyte Ball (whose father, Don Whyte, had bequeathed them an abundance of negatives and contact prints from his student years at CSFA). Together this team embarked on an important journey into photography’s past that is embodied in this book. The Golden Decade presents imagery from over 32 photographers, among them Pirkle Jones, Ruth Marion Baruch, Philip Hyde, Rose Mandel, David Johnson, Gerald Ratto and John Upton.

  • How Keanu Reeves Cheered up by Steve Rose June 15, 2011
How Keanu Reeves cheered up By Steve Rose June 15, 2011 Last summer, a glum shot of Keanu Reeves sparked a global campaign to put a smile on his face. Did it inspire Ode to Happiness, his first book? When it comes to concern for the wellbeing of the well- known, Keanu Reeves is in a class of his own. Last year, all it took was a picture of the 46-year-old sitting alone on a bench, morosely contemplating a sandwich, to go viral – and suddenly a global Cheer Up Keanu Day had been mobilized (15 June, in case you missed it). Nobody knows quite how this happened, but somehow it could only happen to Reeves. Maybe it's his serene-to-the- point-of-stoned screen persona; but it's also, perhaps, the knowledge that Reeves has known, and transcended, genuine suffering in the course of his life – absent parents, deaths of loved ones, and so forth. So what does it mean now the actor has written his first book and called it Ode to Happiness? "I draw a hot sorrow bath," reads the first page. "In my despair room," reads the second. Each page wallows in increasingly absurd levels of self-pity, while the accompanying blotchy, black-ink drawings, by Los Angeles artist Alexandra Grant, look as if they've been blurred by tears. It culminates with an image of a bleeding black spot and the line: "It can always be worse." Before the UN intervenes with a Cheer Up Keanu relief effort, it should be noted that Reeves's slender literary debut is not entirely serious.
