WORKSHOP LEADERS AND SPEAKERS Arabic to English group: Jonathan Wright Jonathan Wright is a British journalist and literary translator. He joined Reuters news agency in 1980 as a correspondent, and has been based in the Middle East for most of the last three decades. He has served as Reuters' Cairo bureau chief, and he has lived and worked throughout the region, including in Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Tunisia and the Gulf. From 1998 to 2003, he was based in Washington, DC, covering U.S. foreign policy for Reuters. For two years until the fall of 2011 Wright was editor of the Arab Media & Society Journal, published by the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Training and Research at the American University in Cairo. Elisabeth Jaquette Elisabeth Jaquette is a translator from the Arabic and Executive Director of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). Her work has been shortlisted for the TA First Translation Prize, longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award, and supported by several English PEN Translates Awards, a Jan Michalski Foundation residency, and the PEN/Heim Translation Fund. She has also served as a judge for numerous translation prizes, including most recently the National Book Award for Translated Literature. Elisabeth’s book-length translations include The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz (Melville House), Thirteen Months of Sunrise by Rania Mamoun (Comma Press), and The Apartment in Bab el-Louk by Donia Maher (Darf Publishers). Le Prix De La Littérature Arabe 2019
Communiqué de presse Paris, le 7 novembre 2019 Le Prix de la littérature arabe 2019 (doté de 10 000 €), créé par l’Institut du monde arabe et la Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère, est décerné à l’écrivain égyptien Mohammed Abdelnabi pour son roman La Chambre de l’araignée (Actes Sud / Sindbad) traduit de l’arabe (Égypte) par Gilles Gauthier Le jury, présidé par Pierre Leroy, cogérant de Lagardère SCA, et composé de personnalités du monde des médias, des arts et de la culture ainsi que de spécialistes du monde arabe, a élu, à l’unanimité, le texte de Mohammed Abdelnabi, saluant « un écrivain audacieux au style affirmé et percutant qui fait plonger le lecteur au cœur des tabous de la société égyptienne et arabe. Un roman qui se veut une ode à la tolérance et à l’humanisme. » A l’occasion de la cérémonie de remise du prix, le 6 novembre 2019 à l’IMA, Jack Lang, Président de l’Institut, a rappelé le caractère unique du Prix et son rôle essentiel en tant que « caisse de résonnance pour les écrivains qui témoignent de l’extraordinaire vitalité de la littérature contemporaine arabe ». Pour Pierre Leroy, Président du Jury du Prix : « Transformant un événement précis en un vibrant plaidoyer pour la tolérance, Mohammed Abdelnabi accomplit ce qui peut être l’une des raisons de la littérature : porter un message politique dans l’espoir de faire évoluer la société ». Mesaʼs 51St Annual Meeting
PRELIMINARY PROGRAM VER. 10-12-17 Jake McGuire Destination DC MESAʼs 51st Annual Meeting Washington DC November 18-21 We return to DC for MESA’s 51st annual meeting at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel where we have met every three years since 1999. The hotel is located in a lovely residential area near the National Zoo, but a nearby stop on the metro red line makes all parts of DC easily accessible. The program of 230+ sessions (see pages 12-51) spread over four days will offer a smorgasbord to whet the appetite of any Middle East studies aficionado. MESA’s affiliate groups meet mostly on Saturday, November 18 (see pages 10-11) and the first program session begins that day at 5:30pm. Panels run all day Sunday and Monday and end at 3pm on Tuesday. The book bazaar will be open Sunday and Monday from 9am to 6pm and on Tuesday from 8am to 12pm (see pages 8-9). MESAʼs ever-popular FilmFest (see the teaser on pages 6-7) begins screenings on Saturday morning and runs through Tuesday until around 2pm. The MESA Presidential Address & Awards will be held Sunday evening from 6pm to 7:30pm, and the MESA Members Meeting on Monday evening from 6pm to 8:00pm. As you will see, it’s business as usual, except of course for a new administration that is determined to ban nationals of six Muslim majority countries from traveling to the US, and MESA having joined a lawsuit against the ban that is making its way to the US Supreme Court in October. -

Jackson School of International Studies 1 ©Copyright 2018 Ibtihal R Mahmood 2 University of Washington Abstract Eroticism in the Works of Contemporary Egyptian and Levantine Female Novelists Ibtihal R Mahmood Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Terri DeYoung Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization Literary and narrative discourses hold an inherent correspondence between themselves and the social, economic, national, and political issues that govern the atmosphere in which they emerge, including those concerning the war of the classes and of the sexes. Using the erotic as a parameter, this paper analyzes three novels by three contemporary women novelists from Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria: Nawāl el-Sa’dāwī, Ḥanān al-Shaykh, and Samar Yazbek, respectively. An analysis of the combination of language, culture, and space can lend itself to an examination of the relationships of power and social hierarchies that govern societies, in a fashion that follows the Foucauldian power/knowledge social theory. It is an approach that is not only pre- occupied with the human dimension of political conflict, but also one that seeks to shed light on the gender-specific nuances that permeate such dynamics. Indeed, it is now widely accepted that ideas of mas- culinity have had a significant impact on the way in which politics is understood and analysed, often skewing our perspective of what ex- actly is taking place. When applied to the realm of Syria studies, em- ploying a more gender-sensitive approach can help us capture the stories that are often untold, or brushed aside; stories of women and men attempting to assert their identity in a political context that is often adamant at denying them this right. -
Zena El Khalil Zena El Khalil, Born Year of the Dragon, Is a Visual Artist, Writer and Cultural Activist Based in Beirut, Lebanon
Zena el Khalil Zena el Khalil, born year of the Dragon, is a visual artist, writer and cultural activist based in Beirut, Lebanon. She has lived in Lagos, London and New York. Her work includes mixed media paintings, installations and performance and is a by-product of political and economic turmoil; focusing on issues of violence, gender and their place in our bubblegum culture. She has exhibited in the United States, Europe, Africa, Japan and the Middle East. While living in NYC, Zena co-founded xanadu*, an art collective dedicated to promoting emerging Arab and under - represented artists as a direct response to the 9-11 attacks which she witnessed. Currently, xanadu* is based in Beirut where Zena is focused on curating cultural events and publishing poets and comic book artists. During the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, Zena was one of the first largely followed Middle Eastern bloggers; her writings published in the international press, including the BBC, CNN, and Der Spiegel. The entire Guardian G2 supplement in July was dedicated to her blog, Beirut Update. In 2008, she was invited to speak at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo and soon after, completed her memoir, Beirut, I Love You, now translated in several languages. Her publishers include The New York Review of Books and Saqi Books and Publishers Weekly gave her book a starred review. In an attempt to spread peace, Zena is often seen running around Beirut in a big pink wedding dress. In 2012, Zena was made a TED Fellow and has since given a few TED and TEDx talks. -
