BID OCTOBER RARE SOUL AUCTION & A TERRY CALLIER LOOK AT ME NOW CADET 5623 D M- 500 Chicago’s Terry Callier came up with this solid soul dancer back in ’66 now recognised as something of a classic. It has the feel of Callier’s jazz/ roots about it too. Those who wish to explore that side of Callier should check out the excellent free-form flipside ‘You Goin’ Miss Your Candy Man’. This is the considerably rarer promo copy by the way. B THE T.S.U. A THOUSAND WONDERS OVIDE 223 VG++ 750 TORONADOES Certainly the most cherished and valuable 45 on Skipper Lee Frazier’s Houston label. A track that rose to prominence in the early noughties through Archie Bell’s album version only to see the sharp end of the deejay fraternity bow in with this one – and rightly so. Still packs a dancefloor to this day. No major marks but just a little ‘fibreglass-y’ under a spotlight. Check the soundbite. C MONIQUE IF YOU LOVE ME (SHOW ME) MAURCI 104 VG++ 1000 Maurice Jackson’s Chicago label had something going with ’s on these Monique Greene 45s, as both sides here use Topper backing tracks. The flipside ‘Never Let Me Go’ also received a separate release but on this one you get both Motor City tunes on one 45. D EDDIE JASPER LEAN ON ME (WHEN DAYCO 4564 M- 500 DAYE’S FOUR BARS HEARTACHES GET ROUGH) A 1967 release on Eddie Daye’s own label and featuring early production credits for one Donnie Hathaway. This Stafford spin careers along and has always been a tricky one to find, certainly it has never reached its full potential, nor has it ever been re-released or booted. Its waiting there for you! E PUZZLE PEOPLE MAKE YOU MINE AMG 553-41 M- 200 This strange Cincinnati label continues to yield up all its secrets. In the three years encompassed by 1975 to 1977 the label released over 100 45s. The vast majority are nothing to do with our music, but there is good soul in amongst it all, some of which seem to be pretty rare. This Puzzle People’s single is a good example and combines an excellent seventies dancer with the kind of harmony sweet soul that folks are getting into these days. F GEORGE SOULÉ CROSS MY HEART MUSCLE SHOALS M- 1000 SOUND 104 George Soulé (pronounced Soo-lay) was a high calibre white soul singer, check out his small hit ‘Get Involved’ if you doubt his credibility. On ‘Cross My Heart’ he cuts his own version of the song released by Tamiko Jones on Metromedia. A handful of copies were pressed up and went into the music publisher’s file. Outside of these it is unlikely that a copy will ever be found again. G FRANK DELL HE BROKE YOUR GAME WIDE VALISE 6900 VG++ 400 OPEN First played back in ’78 when the scene was going through its worst-ever year – ‘Nine Times Out Of Ten’, ‘Trick Me, Treat Me’, Peggy March and plenty more. This soulful number was therefore a beacon for those losing faith rather than keeping it. Franklin Delano Murphy had already recorded as Big Frank and the Essences (with brother Walter) and as Big Frank Murphy by the time he moved to Phil Medley’s Valise label in 1967. Commercial success continued to elude him but, for sure, that was nothing to do with the essential quality of the recordings. H JOHNNY JAMES I’M ADDICTED TO YOUR LOVE BLACK PAINT VG++ 200 & CO Seriously obscure soul/ release, so much so that it doesn’t even have a label number. The same artist as the very rare Northern stomper on Circle M and the label would seem to be connected to that particular Oakland, California imprint. Flipside ‘Ali Shuffle’ is in a similar vein and has a few more significant marks so we would grade it at VG+. I THE MASQUERADERS DO YOU LOVE ME BABY WAND 1172 VG++ 315 Does Northern Soul get any better than this? A true adornment to any collection from one of the greatest ‘minor league’ soul groups of all time. Superb Deep Soul flipside (actually the A- side) ‘Sweet Lovin’ Woman’ as well. Possibly a tad rarer on issue copy with the red writing. This particular copy has suffered the deejay’s wrath on the intro so listen to the soundbite please. J FLAME N KING & THE HO HAPPY DAY N.Y.C.S. 10 M- 260 BOLD ONES Bought off Francis Tee for £2 in 1978 (the year after release), imagine my delight when Richard Searling and Soul Sam made this rare recent release into a dancefloor monster the year after. Flame was one Oscar Richardson and had a whole raft of record releases going back to the early sixties when he was the Flaming Kind, or indeed, the Flaming Kings. Probably released too quickly on Grapevine at the time, the new Millennium has seen the track stake its claim to the dancefloor. A superb copy hardly touched – a few tiny, tiny, marks on the reverse side. K BETTY LLOYD I’M CATCHING ON BSC 401 M- 550 A lesson for all collectors when a quantity of these turned up in the early Nineties only to see it quickly vanish like steam from a kettle. A lesson for dealers too – we could have had 10 copies at £250 the lot! The record soon returned to ‘unavailable’ status and today its as if that little haul never existed. Very nice copy which may become unusual given that most copies of the disc will be in the UK. The B-side ‘You Say Things You Don’t Mean’ is picking up fans too, so we’ve placed it on the soundbite. L NATE EVANS MAIN SQUEEZE TWINIGHT 156 M- 300 On his way to replacing Ralph Johnson in The Impressions, Nate Evans got together with soul legend Syl Johnson to record this midtempo wonder (having earlier recorded ‘This Time With Feeling’). It’s the B-side to ‘Pardon My Innocent Heart’, in itself a super example of slow soul. Johnson was later to record ‘Main Squeeze’ himself on Hi Records… clearly, he recognised a great song. ! ! M WENDELL WATTS YOU GIRL REF-O-REE 715 M- 250 The first release of ‘Will You Be Staying After Sunday’ has the tremendous ‘You Girl’ on the flipside. ‘Will You’ came out later (Ref-O-Ree 720) but with the rather cheesy ‘Love Bug’ on the flipside. This is by far the better coupling, and rare as #720 is, #715 is the better bet. Seemingly a white promo, it doesn’t actually state that on the label and a yellow label copy, if it exists, must be very rare. N GEORGE HOBSON LET IT BE REAL SOUND CITY VG 505 1001 D Seriously worn copy of this scarce item, but from its sound you wouldn’t ever guess that it wasn’t VG++ at least (take a listen). Following on from the Wendell Watts disc, ‘Let It Be Real’ proves that Nashville wasn’t all fiddles and yodelling cowboys. In fact, there was a strong black music tradition in the city, and obviously, no shortage of decent musicians to back it all up. All copies seem to be promos – but you can’t rule anything out! O RALPH GRAHAM SHE JUST SITS THERE UP FRONT VG++ 750 021 Quite a debut disc… not that it did Ralph Graham much good, as everything to do with the rare 45 is submerged. No other releases on the label, no producers – writers Saphire and Korb are unknown to us. At a guess its ‘66/’67 and rich with that Latinesque feel coming into New York soul on some records of the time. The flipside ‘You Just Had To Hurt Someone’ wouldn’t have shamed Ben E. King and is a great track in its own right. Check the soundbite. P THE PARAMYSTICS LOVE VILL MAKE YOU (OR MELLOTONE VG++ 300 BREAK YOU) 100 Very rare Chicago release that seems to involve Billy McGregor and it’s a great sixties mover too. Excellent ballad flipside will be one most group collectors don’t own. Incidentally, the title is not a typing error, nor are the group of German origin! Its an indicator of essential rarity when something like that occurs (suppose they could’ve repressed it but it seems that that didn’t happen). Q HOWARD GUYTON I WATCHED YOU SLOWLY VERVE 10386 VG++ 200 SLIP AWAY D Strong VG++ really, just a few minor marks denoting it from mint minus. Looks like it is a radio station copy, with the legend ‘Fail’ written on both sides – well I suppose this super item did fail really. In addition, the flipside has ‘Terry Combs May 69’ written on it – obviously, some time later as the record’s release was 1966. We can state with some certainty that Mr Combs didn’t play the record much! !

1 VINCE CAREY FIRST GLANCE ROMANCE TURNTABLE 717 M- 10 Typically strong production from the great Robert Banks (1965). 2 THE SPIDELS LIKE A BEE CHAVIS 1035 M- 15 Old Torch spin sounding as good as ever today. 3 SHIRLEY VAUGHN WATCH OUT MR. LONELY DOUBLE RR 246 M- 10 Great N.Y. femme dancer from the same stable as Triode, Tarx, etc. 4 RAY CHARLES GO ON HOME ABC 11045 M- 10 A cavalcade of great 60s dancers from Ray on ABC. Possibly lesser known than the others, this stands alongside them. 5 THE I DON’T KNOW HOW / LONELY WESTBOUND 144 M- 15 SUPERLATIVES IN A CROWD Superb piece of Detroit group soul, stands up to all the expensive stuff. 6 THE TOYS WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME VIRGO 6026 M- 15 BABY Female version of The Invitations classic, only found on this reissue label as a 45. 7 THE MANHATTANS I WANNA BE (YOUR CARNIVAL 507 M- 12 EVERYTHING) Original to the Pretenders biggie, takes the song in a more midtempo style. 8 SANDY BORDEN DEEPER DIPLOMACY 338 M- 15 Les Chansonettes, The Rubies – this version matches either of them. 9 THE ARRIVALS WOMAN AND CHILD LUMMTONE 118 M- 15 Excellent Impressions-styled West Coast group sound. 10 LITTLE CHARLES & HELLO HEARTBREAKER DRUM 1202 M- 25 THE SIDEWINDERS Superb midtempo almost a beat ballad, with Charles Walker’s excellent vocals as ever. !
