MIN. BID AUCTION & A THE LOVERS WITHOUT A DOUBT FRANTIC 2133 M- 600 A totally perfect copy of this West Coast rarity that has at last revealed its true quality and rarity after first appearing on the scene in the seventies. This is the same group that also appeared as the Emotions on Vardan and the Pacesetters on labels such as Minit and Fantasy. B WINFIELD PARKER I LOVE YOU JUST THE RU-JAC 0017 M- 200 SAME Baltimore’s first on a crunching stomper which is just about the rarest record to emerge from the old Torch all-nighters in Stoke. The label later reinvented the song as a midtempo item (Ru-Jac 0024) but this take is the one for the dancefloors. Parker, incidentally claims he was the one lined up for ‘Sweet Soul Music’ but circumstances lead to Ru-Jac labelmate Arthur Conley recording the song instead. C PERFECTIONS I LOVE YOU, MY LOVE S.V.R. 1006 M- 200 In the eighties this was a rare Detroit record indeed, then, at the beginning of the following decade a few copies turned up only to swiftly disappear. That would appear to be the sum total of this crisp Motor City mover. Unusually the flipside is a girl group, the Durettes, with ‘Sweet Sweet Love’ – in itself a reasonable dancer. D JOE ARNOLD NO CLOUDS IN THE SKY 2 SPOT 102 VG++ 200 Just love this early sixties infectious dancer who would appear to be not the same artist as the one on Wand, Cotillion etc and who was part of the Stax revue band that came to Europe. For starters that Joe Arnold was white and this guy certainly sounds black.... on the other hand the saxophone playing is totally top-rate here, but that is most likely coincidental. E THE ARABIANS TAKE A CHANCE ON ME LE MANS 004 VG++ 250 A rare yellow issue for this catchy midtempo item out of Detroit featuring the lead vocal of the great Edward Hamilton and produced by James Hendrix of Carrie Records (obviously not to be confused with Jimi Hendrix) But wait.... don’t miss the great flip ‘You Upset Me Baby’ which we’ve already ‘soundbitten’ for you. F THE GREY IMPRINT DO YOU GET THE CLEAR HILL 102 VG+ 1000 MESSAGE? Dating from 1969 this is one of the more impressive sixties discoveries in recent years and one with loads of mileage for the right deejay, having never been booted/reissued. Just a few light marks on the vinyl but the records sounds fine indeed. Check the soundbite. G JIMMY MACK MY WORLD IS ON FIRE PALMER 5019 D VG++ 810 Feel good gem set the Casino on fire many times back in ’75. It’s never been satisfactorily explained just who the singer is. Certainly we believe the name is borrowed from the Martha Reeves hit. Could it really be Jimmy ‘Soul’ Clark? – sounds a lot like him. H BOBBY REED THE TIME IS RIGHT FOR BELL 888 M- 320 LOVE ‘Discovered’ at Anglo in the mid-eighties and sold to one R. Searling, from whence a monster crossover spin emerged. In truth, it had probably been in a few collections before that time but the crossover scene was yet to find its niche between Modern and Northern. Difficult to imagine how it could be ignored now. Rarer on the silver issue copy than on the white promo and a stone minter too. I FRANKIE ALEXANDER NO SEAT DANCIN DE ELEGANCE M- 400 102 The eighties certainly was a decade when little label independents came to the fore, some of which quickly vanished, but this 1986 release totally slipped under the radar quite amazingly. It’s amazing because, a) it’s totally brilliant with more of a seventies feel about it, and b) producer Ben Cauley was well-known to all at that time (ex Bar-Kay, survivor of the Otis Redding air crash etc etc). For these very reasons it has to be a rarity or else we would have snapped it up then. J SKULL SNAPS MY HANG UP IS YOU UK GSF 7 VG++ 150 On the Jimmy Mack auction item mention is made of Wigan Casino in 1975, well this was another massive spin (also Cleethorpes Pier) at that time being a couple of years old and already difficult to find. For sure time has not changed that situation and none of the eleven UK GSF releases are common. However, this one is easily the rarest of the lot (and we don’t seem to find the record much on U.S. label either). SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 THE INCREDIBLES I FOUND ANOTHER LOVE AUDIO ARTS 8075 M- 15 There’s nothing left to say..... or is there? This fine mover proves there is. 2 BUNNY SIGLER DON’T STOP DOING WHAT NEPTUNE 25 M- 25 YOU’RE DOING Same song as Chuck Jackson ‘I Only Get This Feeling’ but a little rarer. Quality dancer. 3 THE TAMS A LITTLE MORE SOUL ABC 11019 WD M- 10 An oft-over looked group these days, undeservedly so and this almost unknown mover proves it. 4 THE GIFTS GIRL I LOVE YOU BALLAD 005 M- 15 Midtempo gem from an almost unknown group with no less than 7 releases on this label. 5 MIKE & BILL SOMEBODY’S GOTTA GO ARISTA 0139 M- 10 Superb seventies dancer recalls the best of the Philly Sound. 6 HEADLINERS I’M SO TIRED VAL 3 M- 15 Excellent group soul dancer circa 1967 out of Pittsburgh. 7 THE MONTCLAIRS I JUST CAN’T GET AWAY PAULS 363 M- 20 Has lived in the shadow of ‘Hung Up On Your Love’ for too long. Great bouncy dancer. 8 O’JAYS SHATTERED MAN SARU 1220 M- 15 Tremendous Temptations-styled crossover dancer from this great group. 9 MARVA WHITNEY WHAT KIND OF MAN KING 6168 M- 15 Two great sides from Martha with her usual soul searing delivery. 10 STREET PEOPLE I WANNA SPEND MY WHOLE VIGOR 1732 M- 10 LIFE WITH YOU What a side this is.... totally overlooked. The flip ‘Never Get Enough Of Your Love’ was played as a new 1976 release but they missed the reverse (and so did I). NORTHERN RARITIES 11 J.T.
