We examined the effect of cytokinin BA (1-10 µM) added to an MS medium (Murashige and Skoog 1962) on auxiliary shoot multiplication. The second group of test media contained BA (1-5 µM) and gibberellin GA3 (0.3-1.5 µM). The cultures were maintained at a phytotron temperature of 23/25°C (night/ day), 80% relative humidity, with a 16-hour photoperiod and PPFD of 30 µmol m-2 s-1, and cultured in five-week cycles. The highest multiplication rate was obtained for R. canina and R. rubiginosa (4.1 shoots per one explant) and R. dumalis (2.9 shoots per one explant), when shoots were multiplied on an MS medium supplemented with 1 µM BA and 1.5 µM GA3. Multiplication was the weakest in Rosa tomentosa independent of the medium used. Rich Cardiff, U.K. Corresponding author: Tim Rich: [email protected] This pdf constitutes the Version of Record published on 31st August 2020 Abstract A list of 804 plants endemic to Britain, Ireland and the Channel Islands is broken down by country. There are 659 taxa endemic to Britain, 20 to Ireland and three to the Channel Islands. There are 25 endemic sexual species and 26 sexual subspecies, the remainder are mostly critical apomictic taxa. Fifteen endemics (2%) are certainly or probably extinct in the wild. Keywords: England; Northern Ireland; Republic of Ireland; Scotland; Wales. Introduction This note provides a list of vascular plants endemic to Britain, Ireland and the Channel Islands, updating the lists in Rich et al. (1999), Dines (2008), Stroh et al. (2014) and Wyse Jackson et al. (2016). The list includes endemics of subspecific rank or above, but excludes infraspecific taxa of lower rank and hybrids (for the latter, see Stace et al., 2015). There are, of course, different taxonomic views on some of the taxa included. Nomenclature, taxonomic rank and endemic status follows Stace (2019), except for Hieracium (Sell & Murrell, 2006; McCosh & Rich, 2018), Ranunculus auricomus group (A. C. Leslie in Sell & Murrell, 2018), Rubus (Edees & Newton, 1988; Newton & Randall, 2004; Kurtto & Weber, 2009; Kurtto et al. 2010, and recent papers), Taraxacum (Dudman & Richards, 1997; Kirschner & Štepànek, 1998 and recent papers) and Ulmus (Sell & Murrell, 2018). Ulmus is included with some reservations, as many taxa are largely vegetative clones which may occasionally reproduce sexually and hence may not merit species status (cf. -
QQR 7 Information Pack
7th Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) Information Pack (version 2.21) 14 May 2021 1 Version 2.2: Four reptiles and two seals removed from the EPS list (Annex 1); one EPS amphibian and two EPS reptiles that are all Endangered removed from Annex 2 – these species were included in Version 2 and/or 2.1 in error. See Annex 1 and Annex 2 for further information. 1. Introduction Every five years, the country nature conservation bodies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot), working jointly through the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), review Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (WCA) 1981. The review will provide recommendations to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and to Ministers for the Environment in the Scottish Government and Welsh Government for changes to these schedules2. This is known as the Quinquennial Review (QQR). As part of the QQR, stakeholders are provided with the opportunity to propose changes to the species on the schedules. This Information Pack has been produced for the 7th QQR (QQR 7). It is important to note that this QQR differs from previous ones. The Information Pack explains the new selection criteria, provides a timetable, and explains the process to be used by stakeholders. Contact details of the QQR Inter-agency Group who are managing QQR 7, are listed in Section 5. In addition, the Information Pack provides details of how to complete the online survey through which stakeholders propose new species for inclusion on, or removal of existing species from Schedules 5 and 8, or propose a change to how species are protected on the schedules. -

The table also provides details of the species' occurrences in the four UK countries, and describes whether the species was an 'original' species (on the original list created between 1995 and 1999), or was added following the 2007 review. All original species were provided with Species Action Plans (SAPs), species statements, or are included within grouped plans or statements, whereas there are no published plans for the species added in 2007. Scientific names and commonly used synonyms derive from the Nameserver facility of the UK Species Dictionary, which is managed by the Natural History Museum. The British Forms of Tuberaria Guttata (L.) Fourreau
THE BRITISH FORMS OF TUBERARIA GUTTATA (L.) FOURREAU By M. C. F. PROCTOR Department of Botany, University of Exeter ABSTRACT An account is given of the variation in British Tuberaria guttata, and of its previous taxonomic treat ment: the taxonomic value of various characters is examined. Most of the Welsh and Irish plants includ ing the type population of Helianthemum breweri Planch. differ from T. guttata as it occurs in the Channel Isles and northern France in their shorter stature, the more common presence of bracts and other characters. All the characters said to distinguish breweri intergrade continuously with those of typical guttata in both herbarium and cultivated material, and are only loosely correlated. The more compact Welsh and Irish plants appear to be comparable with plants in similar exposed coastal habitats in north-west France. It is concluded that T. guttata shows ecotypic differentiation in relation to exposure on the Atlantic coast of Europe, and that the populations combining short diffuse habit and numerous bracts may be of polytopic origin. It is suggested that they should not be given formal taxonomic recognition. 1. INTRODUCTION Like a number of other widespread Mediterranean species, Tuberaria guttata extends northwards up the west coast of Europe to a northern limit in the British Isles. Up to the north coast of France its distribution is more or less continuous, and the Channel Islands lie on the northern fringe of this essentially continuous area. But north of the English Channel its range is disjunct, and it occurs only in widely separated colonies on the coasts of north Wales and western Ireland. -

Tuberaria Guttata (L.) Fourr
Tuberaria guttata (L.) Fourr Spotted Rock-rose Tuberaria guttata flowers from May to June and is best searched for on warm and sunny mornings when the bright yellow, purple- blotched petals open widely and are readily visible. Populations are known from northern Wales, western and south-western Ireland, the Channel Islands and western Scotland, although there are doubts about its provenance at the sole Scottish locality. It occurs at coastal locations in exposed, well-drained rocky outcrops on moderately acidic shallow peats, typically where there is sparse vegetation cover, making populations particularly vulnerable to the encroachment of more competitive vegetation. Fajnevek a Rosa nemzetségben A vadrózsafajok pontos taxonómiai ismerete kiváló beltartalmuk és élettani hatásaik miatt fontos a gyümölcskutatásban is. Olyan rózsák tartoznak a vadrózsák csoportjába, amelyeket még nem neme- sítettek. Értéküket éppen ez adja: szívósak, bírják a szárazságot, hideget, növényvédelemre és metszésre nincs szükség. Ehető gyümölcsöt teremnek, viszont évente csak egyszer, nyár elején virágoznak. rozsdás rózsa J. Rosa rubiginosa (P. 484). Európában és Nyugat-Ázsiában őshonos, mára máshol is elterjedt. A hosszúkás, piros termés a tél elején érik be. Már a debreceni füvészkönyvben is, 1807-ben rozsdás Rózsa (MFűvK. 303), majd 1881: rozsdáslevelű rózsák ’Rubiginosae’ (MTtK. XVI: 312), 1902: rozsdás rózsa (MVN. 103), 1911: ua. (Nsz. 259). A név a latin szaknyelvi Rosa rubiginosa binómen tükörfordítása, a faji jelzőnek ’rozsdás, rozsdavörös’ a jelentése, a szó az indogerm. *roudho ’vörös’ (G. 545) gyökre vezethető vissza (> lat. ruber ’ua.’). A rozsdás rózsa szó szerinti megfelelője a ném. Rostrose (WR. 93; R. 1890: Meyers 963), ol. rosa robiginosa, sp. eglatina roja (AFE. 105), fr. rosier rouillé (GRIN.; R. 1887: CA. 52), rosier rubigineux, le. róża rdzawa, szlk. ruža hrdzavá, szln. šipek rjastordeči, sp. rosa herrumbrosa ’ua.’ (LH.) terminus, illetve bővítménnyel a fr. églantier couleur de rouille (TB.), azaz ’rozsdaszínű vadrózsa’. Hasonneve a rozsdaszínű rózsa (AFE. 105). Társneve a ragyás rózsa (P. 217) és a sövény- rózsa (uo.; R. 1952: sövény rózsa ’Rosa rubiginosa’ [Növhat. 324]). Az utóbbi név arra utal, hogy az igen erőteljes, sűrű, tüskés növény alkalmas sövények készítésére. Ez az alapja ném. schottische Zaunrose (G. 223), azaz ’skót kerítésrózsa’ nevének is. A fr. R. -

Itineraries - Lôn Las Cefni Grid Reference: SH 422 656 – SH 430 770 – SH 451 782 Lôn Las Cefni Cycleway ~ All day or more A 14 mile off-road cycleway/footpath traversing beautiful countryside from Llyn Cefni and the Dingle woodland Nature Reserve, through Malltraeth Marsh RSPB wetland reserve, past Malltraeth Estuary and then through Newborough Forest. The cycleway can be entered at several points: Llyn Cefni Two free car parks at either end of the lake with picnic tables. Circular walk around the lake 3.5 miles. Cycle path linking the two car parks along the south side but not complete along the north 2 miles. The cycle path links south to the Dingle Nature Reserve, Llangefni and beyond. Views across the lake. Excellent for wildfowl especially in the winter. Dingle Woodland Nature Reserve Two large pay and display car parks. A mile of woodland walks along the banks of the Afon Cefni. Woodland and river birds. The cyclepath traverses the centre of Llangefni, Anglesey’s County Town. Malltraeth Marsh From the lower end of the Bryn Cefni Industrial Estate, the cyclepath follows the banks of the Afon Cefni for some 5.5 miles to Malltraeth. The path passes underneath the A55 dual carriageway and across the old A5. For the most part, the route sits on the raised floodbanks of the canalised Afon Cefni. It affords fine views across the marsh, with an especially interesting section being the 2 miles south west from the A5 overlooking the RSPB’s large reedbed and wetland reserve. The flat, former estuary is an unusual landscape feature in this part of the country. -

Greek Island Odyssey Holiday Report 2013 Day 1: Saturday 20th April As our plane came in to land at Rhodes airport the wildlife spotting began! We had a good view of a female Marsh Harrier and Little Egret over the nearby river. Then, on the drive to the hotel, we saw a Wood Sandpiper on the same river by the road bridge. Upon our arrival in the medieval old town Andy and Denise made a quick foray into the moat and town and found Starred Agamas, Oertzen’s Rock Lizards, a Dahl’s Whip Snake and Large Wall Brown butterflies. It was late evening by then and so we sat at a local taverna for our first traditional Greek mezedes meal and discussed plans for the week ahead over a civilized glass of wine. Day 2: Sunday 21st April After a hearty breakfast at the hotel we set off on our first Anatolian Worm Lizard full day of exploration. Our first stop was the archaeological park at Monte Smith. After parking the car and with lots of butterflies flying around us, it was hard to know just what to look at first. Andy diverted our attention, announcing that he had found an Anatolian Worm Lizard, a strange creature looking more like a worm than a lizard and which is found in Turkey and Greece. On Rhodes it is recorded only in the northern parts of the island. Lesser Fiery Copper We then moved on to watch the butterflies. The first two we identified were male and female Lesser Fiery Coppers, soon followed by Eastern Bath White, and Clouded yellow. -

The original book is A5-format, with 168 pages. Some changes have been made as follows: NOMENCLATURE has been updated, with the name used in the 1988 edition in brackets. Irish Names and family names have also been added. STATUS: There have been three Flora Protection Orders (1980, 1987, 1999) to date. If a species is currently protected (i.e. 1999) this is stated as PROTECTED, if it was previously protected, the year(s) of the relevant orders are given. IUCN categories have been updated as follows: EN to CR, V to EN, R to V. The original (1988) rating is given in brackets thus: “CR (EN)”. This takes account of the fact that a rare plant is not necessarily threatened. The European IUCN rating was given in the original book, here it is changed to the UK IUCN category as given in the 2005 Red Data Book listing. MAPS and APPENDIX have not been reproduced here.
