Available Online: 01st April, 2016 ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial and antifungal activities of crude extracts from leaves and flower of Halimium halimifolium, and compared with those of Cistus salviifolius and Cistus monspeliensis. The tested plants (leaves and flowers) were extracted with ethanol, the activities were screened against three Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis and staphylococcus aureus), three Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella enteric, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli), and two pathogenic fungi (Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger). The efficacy of these extracts was tested against those microorganisms through a disc-diffusion method employing 15 휇L of each sample per paper discs (6 mm in diameter). Comparable results were carried out using Gentamicin and Amphotericin as standard antibiotics. Ethanol extracts of different parts of plant exhibited good activity against all microorganisms tested. -

NAVARRO ANDRÉS * Key words: Karyology, Cistus, Halimium, Tuberaria, Helianthemum, CW. Spain. RESUMEN.— Se realiza el recuento cromosómico de siete Cistáceas en un total de diez poblaciones. Se confirma el número cromosómico de Cistus crispus (2n = 18), C. laurifolius (2n - 18), Halimium umbellatum (2n = 18), Tuberaria lignosa (2n = 14), T. guttata (2n = 36), Helianthemum salicifolium (2n = 20) y H. aegyptiacum (2n = 20). Damos por primera vez el número cromosómico de C. crispus, H. umbellatum, T. lignosa y H. aegyptiacum en material español. Se comenta la posición taxonómica de alguno de estos taxa. SUMMARY .— In the present paper we perform the count of the chromosome num bers in seven species of the Cistaceae from ten population. We confirm the chromoso me numbers of Cistus crispus (2n = 18), C. laurifolius (2n = 18), Halimium umbella tum (2n = 18), Tuberaria lignosa (2n = 14), T. guttata (2n = 36), Helianthemum sali cifolium (2n = 20) and H. aegyptiacum (2n - 20). We give here, for the first time, the chromosome numbers of C. crispus, H. umbellatum, T. lignosa and H. aegyptiacum in Spanish plants. The taxonomy of several of the taxa is discussed briefly. Como continuación de los estudios publicados sobre cariología de Cistáceas (Stvdia Botánica 4: 103-107, 165-168, 169-171. 1985) tratamos de completar en este artículo, los datos cariológicos de algunas especies de Cistus, Halimium, Tu beraria y Helianthemum no consideradas en los trabajos anteriormente mencio nados y que forman parte de la flora vascular del centro-occidente español. -

This paper presents a review of scientific studies analyzing the biological properties of different species of Cistus sp. Materials and methods. Forty papers that discuss the current research of Cistus sp. as phytotherapeutic agent were used for this discussion. Literature analysis. The results of scientific research indicate that extracts from various species of Cistus sp. exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, cytotoxic and anticancer properties. These properties give rise to the pos- sibility of using Cistus sp. as a therapeutic agent supporting many therapies. Wiens Host specificity in the parasitic plant Cytinus hypocistis was quantified at four sites in the Algarve region of Portugal from 2002 to 2007. The parasite was found to be locally host specific, and only two hosts were consistently infected: Halimium halimifolium and Cistus monspeliensis. C. hypocistis did not infect hosts in proportion to their abundance; at three sites, 100% of parasites occurred on H. halimifolium which represented just 42.4%, 3% and 19.7% of potential hosts available, respectively. At the remaining site, where H. halimifolium was absent, 100% of parasites occurred on C. monspeliensis which represented 81.1% of potential hosts available. Other species of potential host were consistently uninfected irrespective of their abundance. Ecological niche divergence of host plants H. halimifolium and C. monspeliensis may isolate host-specific races of C. hypocistis, thereby potentially driving al- lopatric divergence in this parasitic plant. Tuberaria guttata (L.) Fourr Spotted Rock-rose Tuberaria guttata flowers from May to June and is best searched for on warm and sunny mornings when the bright yellow, purple- blotched petals open widely and are readily visible. Populations are known from northern Wales, western and south-western Ireland, the Channel Islands and western Scotland, although there are doubts about its provenance at the sole Scottish locality. It occurs at coastal locations in exposed, well-drained rocky outcrops on moderately acidic shallow peats, typically where there is sparse vegetation cover, making populations particularly vulnerable to the encroachment of more competitive vegetation. Greek Island Odyssey Holiday Report 2013 Day 1: Saturday 20th April As our plane came in to land at Rhodes airport the wildlife spotting began! We had a good view of a female Marsh Harrier and Little Egret over the nearby river. Then, on the drive to the hotel, we saw a Wood Sandpiper on the same river by the road bridge. Upon our arrival in the medieval old town Andy and Denise made a quick foray into the moat and town and found Starred Agamas, Oertzen’s Rock Lizards, a Dahl’s Whip Snake and Large Wall Brown butterflies. It was late evening by then and so we sat at a local taverna for our first traditional Greek mezedes meal and discussed plans for the week ahead over a civilized glass of wine. Day 2: Sunday 21st April After a hearty breakfast at the hotel we set off on our first Anatolian Worm Lizard full day of exploration. Our first stop was the archaeological park at Monte Smith. After parking the car and with lots of butterflies flying around us, it was hard to know just what to look at first. Andy diverted our attention, announcing that he had found an Anatolian Worm Lizard, a strange creature looking more like a worm than a lizard and which is found in Turkey and Greece. On Rhodes it is recorded only in the northern parts of the island. Lesser Fiery Copper We then moved on to watch the butterflies. The first two we identified were male and female Lesser Fiery Coppers, soon followed by Eastern Bath White, and Clouded yellow. -

(Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Lithocolletinae Stainton, 1854) is described to ac- commodate two species formerly assigned to the genus Phyllonorycter Hübner, 1822: Triberta helianthemella (Herrich- Schäffer, 1861) comb. nov. and T. cistifoliella (Groschke, 1944) comb. nov. Triberta cistifoliella bona sp. is restored from synonymy based on morphological characters. The new genus is biologically associated with the plant family Cistaceae of the order Malvales and is endemic to the Palaearctics. Our molecular analysis of eleven nuclear genes failed to unambiguously place Triberta in the lithocolletine phylogeny, but revealed that this genus is distinct from either clade Phyllonorycter + Cremastobombycia and Cameraria. The original book is A5-format, with 168 pages. Some changes have been made as follows: NOMENCLATURE has been updated, with the name used in the 1988 edition in brackets. Irish Names and family names have also been added. STATUS: There have been three Flora Protection Orders (1980, 1987, 1999) to date. If a species is currently protected (i.e. 1999) this is stated as PROTECTED, if it was previously protected, the year(s) of the relevant orders are given. IUCN categories have been updated as follows: EN to CR, V to EN, R to V. The original (1988) rating is given in brackets thus: “CR (EN)”. This takes account of the fact that a rare plant is not necessarily threatened. The European IUCN rating was given in the original book, here it is changed to the UK IUCN category as given in the 2005 Red Data Book listing. MAPS and APPENDIX have not been reproduced here.
