You wouldn’t show up for a business 2 /9/08 I nternatio nal Dinne r lunch date now would you? Mark your calendars in red for every Wednesday at 12:15. A little heads up, don’t just show

3/15/08 Lobster Dinner up at 12:15, come a little early to enjoy your fellow members and gue sts. Also, if everyone is registered by 12:15 our lunch registrar (who right now is Mike Cutler) might even get to eat lunch w ith everyone. Hey – great idea – how about someone helping out at the registration desk. Mike has this process down to a science and would be glad to show you how it’s done. Let’s get crossed trained and just maybe Mike can take a break once in awhile. Let’s all learn something new. How about helping out for a month? How about coming a little early to help set up the room? How about staying a few minutes after our meeting to help tear down the room? How about showing up for lunch?

When a sign up sheet is passed around at meetings, PLEASE mark YES if you can help/attend or NO if you can’t. If nothing is marked it will be assumed that you need to check your schedules and you will receive a phone call. It will save time for whoever the person planning the event happens to be from having to make extra phone calls.

Where is out web site? Board Meeting Signup by Derek Locke We need you to register for events online when you receive an invitation email!

Recently members have received emails inviting them to certain events or meetings. In particular, an email was sent on August 23 and resent August 30, asking Rotarians to register to attend the board on September 13. To date we have had 5 board members register. If we assume that all board members who plan to attend have signed up online, then we will not have a quorum and therefore not be able to hold the meeting. We would really like to have all members make the most use of the web site. This will help with planning and communication.

Here's how you register yourself for an event. When you receive one of these emails, you will see a "Register Online" button at the bottom. Please click on this. Your browser will open and you will be taken to the login page of the website with your user name already filled in. Simply type in your password and click login and you will be taken to a registration page for the event. Click on "Register Me" and you are done. You will also be sent a confirmation email, which confirms that your registration was successfully completed. In addition your weekly bulletin is customized to show the events for which you have registered. This section should act as a reminder for the events.

The process of registering only takes a couple of minutes, so please register as soon as you receive the email.

We encourage all members to make use of this new feature to help us run the club more efficiently and to know in advance who will be attending certain functions.

Thanks for your cooperation with this.

Bob Ankrapp, City of Dearborn Heights Emergency Management

As most of you know we had to move our meeting to Randy's Bar and Grill this week, as Al Schultz suffered a mild heart attack during the Ford Road Cleanup project on Saturday. Al is doing well and is taking it easy, but will be back to cater our lunch at the usual venue next week.

Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate to allow us to meet on the patio, so our speaker had to contend with the noise of the bar crowd during his presentation. Despite this Bob Ankrapp from the City of Dearborn Heights did a great job telling us what the city is doing in terms of emergency preparedness.

Bob talked to us about everything from what types of disasters for which the City prepares, to the need and creation of a family disaster plan. I have a presentation that Bob distributed with this information if anyone wants a copy. Just give me a call. I will also talk to Jo Ann Cutler about maybe writing this up to include on the website and next weeks bulletin.

Although we were in a fairly busy bar, we did manage to hold something that resembled our regular meeting, including announcements and fines. We did however decide that it was best if the other patrons were not subjected to our singing of the national anthem.

Club Assembly at Al Ameer Restaurant

Our regular meeting this week was not held at our regular location, but rather was moved to the Al Ameer Restaurant on Ford Road. I think I speak for all that attended when I say that the venue, staff and food were excellent. Despite our change of venue one persistent Dearborn Rotarian managed to find us, thanks to a sign Lynne placed at the church.

Mike Roy has had a collection box placed at this location for a while now and tells me that he has to work overtime to keep the box empty. Mike emptied the box on Tuesday and counted $61.00 accumulated in just two weeks. Not bad for "loose change". Our thanks go to the restaurant for its support of this fundraiser.

We did have the pleasure of being introduced to the restaurant owner, Khalid, who was on hand to ensure that we got the best service.

This meeting was our monthly club assembly, which gives our membership the opportunity to get involved in the running of our club by providing input on areas that particularly interest them. While attendance was somewhat higher than recent weeks, it was still rather low (13 members). This low attendance particularly affects our club funds when we are at the church as we have to pay for a minimum of 15 lunches and pay the church a monthly fee for the use of the room. We encourage every member to make the effort to attend the meetings. Not only are you missing out on great speakers that Rich is bringing in, we like to see your smiling faces

My Dear Club Members: It has become quite evident the last few meetings have been very sparse with members. Every once in awhile I have to get up on my soap box and address each and every one of you. We really need you to support our club lunches. This is not only our lunch and fellowship time, but it is where we conduct our Rotary weekly business. Just think how it looks to perspective members or guests where there are only a handful of Dearborn Heights members at lunch. I know all to well about business obligations, vacations, travel, etc. but when you are in town there should be no excuse for not joining your fellow club members on Wednesday at 12:15. Remember, by not showing up you are hurting our club. When you make up at another club it is your responsibility to let our secretary know. No matter what you might think, none of us are mind readers so please call, send a note or an email to Mike Cutler or tell him the next week at lunch. A little blurb from Treasurer, Derek Locke: “This low attendance particularly affects our club funds when we are at the church as we to pay for a minimum of 15 lunches and pay the church a monthly fee for the use of the room. We encourage every member to make the effort to attend the meetings. Not only are you missing out on great speakers that Rich Jarosz is bringing in, we like to see your smiling faces.

We have a beautiful new web site which Derek Locke has spent countless hours working on getting it up and running and organized to be user friendly (hey – if Rich Jarosz can navigate it without blowing up his computer - anyone should be able to use it.) Go ahead and get into it and check out the various links – you’ll be amazed. Any questions (and remember there are no dumb questions) call Derek for some help. Just like anything we do, the more you use it the easier it will become

Pulled this out of my file. It was written by Lynne Killion back in November of 2005 and thought it would be most appropriate to include here: Why come to the meeting you ask yourself? The answers are simple: Because it!s ROTARY! Because there will be a great speaker Because there is heart warming friendship Because there is always a tasty lunch Because if you!re not there, you!ll be missed Honest you will.

Mark Swieczowski announced at the board meeting that baby Reed is doing just fine after a bit of a rocky start in life. Mark extends his and Kristen’s grateful thanks to everyone for the kind notes and thoughts concerning their baby.

EVERYONE is so pleased for you Mark and Kristen!

Do you know where is our web site?

From the September issue of the Rotarian “STILL RIGHT AFTER ALL THIS TIME. The importance of doing the right thing in the right way is nothing new to Rotarians. Now it seems the idea is catching on everywhere. The topic of ethics is popping up in front-page headlines and back-page comics. Corporations look to ethicists for guidance. But the subject doesn’t have to get complicated. It can be boiled down to a 24-word standard called The Four-Way Test. This ethical litmus test was officially adopted by Rotary International in 1943, althought it was conceived in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor, a Chicago executive and past RI president. This year marks it 75th birthday, and The Four- Way Test keeps on ticking.”
