Churchill THE POWER OF THE MESSAGE: A STUDY OF MEDIA INFLUENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PUBLIC OPINION 2006 Advisor: Joseph Basso, J.D., Ph.D., APR Public Relations Graduate Program The influential power that media channels have directly affects the development of public opinion when it comes to the National Football League, its players and subsequent on or off the field incidents. The purpose of this study was to show how public opinion of the NFL is driven by different demographic information and by how fans get their news concerning the NFL and its subsequent adverse news. This study will attempt to show how age and media source can affect the development of public opinion, how public opinion is formed and potential variables that may influence opinion formation. The researcher performed a non-scientific pen and paper survey of fifty individual males in the southern New Jersey area to determine their attitudes and opinions. Respondents were asked simple demographic and open ended questions and then asked the same questions again after providing an addendum of facts concerning each case in the survey. Responses to surveys were calculated using Microsoft Excel charting software and then displayed by demographic age group. Resulting data indicates that media content or influence has little to no affect on the development of public opinion about the NFL, its teams or its players. "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ... OFFENSE: RB LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON, SAN DIEGO CHARGERS • The Chargers seized the AFC West lead on the road Sunday night with a 35-27 win at Denver, bolstered by Tomlinson’s four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving), 105 rushing yards on 20 carries, and 75 yards on three receptions. In his 89th career game, Tomlinson scored his 99th, 100th, 101st, and 102nd career touchdowns, reaching 100 TDs in the fewest games played.     Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100. There were 217 Big 12 schools’ grid representatives on 2002 NFL opening day rosters from all 12 members after 297 standouts from league members in ’02 entered NFL training camps—both all-time highs for the league. Nebraska (35 alumni) was third among all Division I-A schools in 2002 opening day roster men in the highest professional football configuration while Texas A&M (30) was among the Top Six in total NFL alumni last autumn.

ATHLETES IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW: JOURNALISTIC ACCOUNTS FOR THE RESENTFUL FAN DAVID RAY PAPKE* Sports have evolved in the course of American history from local folk games to highly organized commercial enterprises in which team owners, players, broadcasters, and marketers of sports products can liter- ally earn millions.1 The increasingly sophisticated dissemination of sports news has been an important part of the evolution of sports. How- ever, in recent decades sports news has somewhat curiously come to in- clude frequent reports of athletes alleged to have committed crimes. The print media, in particular, have grown eager to describe not only what athletes accomplish on the playing courts, but also their predica- ments in the courts of law. This article explores the features, meanings and ramifications of this journalistic development. The first part of the article offers a short his- tory of sports news in America and focuses, in particular, on sports news in daily newspapers and sports periodicals.

    THE POUNDERS ABOUND! With quarterbacks firing laser-like passes to a bevy of aesthetically gifted wide receivers, it’s no surprise that the NFL’s aerial attack has captured the attention of fans from coast to coast. But though the game in the air may be at a fever pitch of excitement, the league’s talented corps of running backs has more than made its presence felt in the modern-day NFL. And according to some, their contributions have never been more important. “I’ll never back off the belief that the running game is crucial to success,” says ESPN’s MERRIL HOGE, who spent 1987-94 as a running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears. “The running game and running backs are crucial. Being able to run the football and to stop the run are the foundations of the game.” Consider the 2003 season, which was a resounding success for the guys who unmercifully pounded the ball and helped their teams win the old-fashioned way – on the ground. Last year, there were 151 100-yard individual rushing games, the most all-time. There were six 1,500-yard rushers and four 1,600-yard rushers – the most ever in a single season. And for only the second time in history (1998), two players – Baltimore’s JAMAL LEWIS and Green Bay’s AHMAN GREEN – rushed for 1,800 yards. Plus, five players went over 2,000 scrimmage yards, the most ever. “I felt that at the end of last year we may have been watching the best group of NFL running backs to ever play the game at one time,” Hoge says.
