The game is believed to be the first regular-season college football game to ever be played at the venue. The Bears and Bulldogs have met only twice in their history with Fresno State winning on both occasions. The Bulldogs were victorious in the first meeting between the schools in Berkeley on Sept. 9, 1995, squeaking out a 25-24 win. The last time the teams played in Fresno on Sept. 23, 2000, Fresno State was a 17-3 winner. Cal and Fresno State have not played since Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, a former Fresno State quarterback, became the head coach of the Golden Bears prior to the 2002 season.
