Cal in Pac-12 North in 2011; New Conference Media Rights Deal Starts in 2012 The Pac-12 Conference has taken major steps to transform itself into a dynamic new enterprise by forming two football divisions that maintain traditional rivalries, creating the first-ever Pac-12 football championship game, establishing schedule models for all other sports and agreeing to move to an equal revenue sharing plan for the first time in conference history on Oct. 21, 2010. The Chancellors and Presidents of the 12 member institutions voted to create a new North-South division structure that allows the conference to continue to play its traditional rivalry games, including the long-standing annual games among the California schools, delivers a football championship game to the home field of the top team in the regular-season conference standings and is easy for fans to follow. The new divisions will feature California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington and Washington State in the North; and Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA, USC, and Utah in the South. Each school will play five divisional games and four cross-divisional games each year. To preserve all of the historic rivalries, including those among the California schools, the new scheduling format locks in annual inter-divisional games between the Northern and Southern California teams that date back to the 1930s. On May 4, 2011, the Pac-12 announced it is teaming up with ESPN and FOX Sports Media Group on a landmark agreement for a broadcast and national cable television package that extends and expands long-time partnerships with both companies. At the same time, Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott announced the creation of a new media company, Pac-12 Media Enterprises, which will own the Pac-12 Network, the Pac-12 Digital Network, and Pac-12 Properties. This new company will control and distribute on its platforms and on all devices, the Pac-12 games not licensed to ESPN and FOX Sports, and will hold other media and event rights. This entity will be wholly owned and controlled by the Pac-12 Conference and will exist side-by-side with the newly announced ESPN and FOX Sports arrangements. Although terms of the ESPN and Fox Sports agreements were not disclosed, Scott called it a “landmark deal” on several fronts. He pointed out that the Pac-12’s member institutions would, for the first time ever, share equally in the revenue from the new arrangement, and that the equal revenue distribution would start immediately when the deal goes into effect in 2012.

California Memorial Stadium Renovation Since it opened in the fall of 1923, California Memorial Stadium has generated scores of unforgettable memories for generations of Golden Bears. From the Wonder Teams of the 1920s to the Pappy Waldorf years mid-century to the current success attained under head coach Jeff Tedford, the venerable facility has treated fans of all ages to many of the greatest games in the history of Cal football. Work is underway to renovate the historic building, bringing it up to modern standards and creating a facility that will significantly reduce seismic risk and create a more enjoyable environment for the hundreds of thousands of fans who attend games every year – all while maintaining the architecture and character of the celebrated structure. Construction on the $321 million project began in earnest in early June 2010 and is expected to be completed in time for the 2012 season opener. The Golden Bears will move to temporary quarters at San Francisco’s AT&T Park in 2011 before returning to campus for the following campaign and providing new generations of Cal fans the opportunity to treasure the venue for years to come. Cal defeated Stanford, 9-0, in the first game played in Memorial Stadium on Nov. 24, 1923. The Bears have compiled a 317-213-16 (.595) in the 88 seasons the venue has been home to Cal football. The 2010 season finale against Washington last Nov. 27 marked the 546th and final game played in the most recent configuration of the stadium since it opened in the fall of 1923.

Student-Athlete High Performance Center The Student-Athlete High Performance Center, under construction since late 2008, is scheduled to open prior to the 2011 football season and will become a modern new home for approximately 450 student-athletes in football and 12 other sports to use on a daily basis. The 142,000-square-foot facility will house locker rooms, offices and meeting rooms, as well as areas for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition and academics. The building is the physical manifestation of Cal’s High Performance Initiative, a nontraditional approach to excellence that challenges conventional ways of thinking about and delivering high performance in an intercollegiate setting. In an effort to take Cal to the highest level, the HPI applies worldwide best practices in sport and human performance to all aspects of the athletic department. This commitment creates and sustains high performance across Cal Athletics and maximizes the potential of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff. The High Performance Initiative has three primary objectives – to maximize competitive advantage, to efficiently use available resources and to optimize the student-athlete experience – which will be attained primarily through applying a different mindset to intercollegiate athletics and by delivering world-class advanced support services and facilities.

In 2006, the Bears set school records for average fans per home game (64,318) and overall spectators (450,223). The following year in 2007, Cal set a season-ticket record of 41,366. Cal last played in front of a sellout home crowd of 71,799 vs. USC on Oct. 3, 2009. The Bears drew their two biggest crowds of the 2010 campaign in two of their last three home games, with 65,963 on hand vs. Oregon and a season-high 67,793 for the Big Game against Stanford. Nationally, Cal has also had multiple Heisman Trophy candidates under Tedford, including J.J. Arrington (2004), (2006), DeSean Jackson (2007) and (2009). Other national recognition has also come the Bears way in recent years. In addition to Mack winning the 2008 Draddy Award, the Bears have had a pair of other players collect additional prestigious national awards. In 2006, Jackson was the recipient of the inaugural Award for the top return man in the country, while Daymeion Hughes earned The Lott Trophy (now known as the Lott IMPACT Trophy) given to a defensive player to equally recognize his athletic performance and personal character. Mohamed was a quarterfinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy in 2010.

Group includes six from U.S. Army All-American Bowl and nine ranked in top 150 of at least one recruiting service 11 All-Americans in Cal’s No. 14 Signing Class of 2011

(BERKELEY) – California has signed 11 All-American and 22 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to join the Golden Bears football program for the 2011 season, head coach Jeff Tedford announced Wednesday. Cal’s 2011 signing class ranked as high as No. 14 according to Scout. Rivals has Cal at No. 17, while ESPN listed the Bears at No. 18 and MaxPreps at No. 20. “We are excited about the student-athletes that we have signed in our 2011 recruiting class,” said Tedford. “We feel like the members of this class will be able to fill some of the needs we have on both sides of the ball in an expedient fashion. Many of the players are among the nationally elite at their respective positions and will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact on the Cal football program.” The 2011 class includes six participants in the most recent U.S. Army All-American Bowl – LB Jason Gibson (Gardena, CA/Junipero Serra HS), DB Stefan McClure (Vista, CA/Vista HS), DL Viliami Moala (Sacramento, CA/Grant HS), OL Jordan Rigsbee (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley HS), DL Brennan Scarlett (Portland, OR/Central Catholic HS) and DB Avery Walls (McDonough, GA/Eagle’s Landing Christian HS) – while DL Todd Barr (Lakewood, CA/Lakewood HS) played in the Under Armour All-America Game. The Bears have had a total of 12 signees from the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in their past two recruiting classes. Five members of the 2011 group – Barr (No. 48), Walls (No. 68), WR Maurice Harris (Greensboro, NC/Northern Guilford HS, No. 91), Moala (No. 97) and Gibson (No. 131) – are on the ESPN 150 list. A total of nine Cal recruits are rated among the nation’s top-150 players overall by at least one recruiting service (highest rating in parenthesis) in Moala (No. 4 Prepstar), Barr (No. 48 ESPN), DL Mustafa Jalil (San Diego, CA/Central Catholic HS, No. 52 Sporting News), Walls (No. 68 ESPN), Gibson (No. 71 Sporting News), Scarlett (No. 73 Sporting News), Harris (No. 91 ESPN), McClure (No. 118 Rivals) and Rigsbee (No. 136 Prepstar). Moala is a five-star recruit (Scout, Tom Lemming) who is listed as the nation’s No. 2 by Lemming, Scout and SuperPrep, No. 7 at his position according to ESPN and No. 8 by Rivals. He had 226 tackles and 31.0 sacks over his final two prep seasons and led his team to a combined 39-2 record and three consecutive conference titles during his final three campaigns as well as a state crown as a 2008 sophomore. Two others – Barr and Scarlett – picked up four-and-a-half stars from Lemming. Barr ranks as the nation’s No. 6 defensive tackle by ESPN and Lemming, and No. 12 according to Scout. He is also Rivals’ No. 12 strongside defensive end nationally. Barr is also deemed as high as the nation’s No. 26 defensive lineman overall according to SuperPrep. The 2010 first-team Best in the West selection and Moore League Player of the Year led his conference with 20.0 sacks in his final prep season while adding 73 tackles and 35.0 tackles for loss. He is also a two-time all- state choice. Scarlett, who was selected for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl after his senior year despite playing in only three games due to injury, comes in at No. 9 on Rivals’ ranking of the nation’s top defensive ends and is its No. 2 player overall from Oregon. He had 31 tackles in his first two contests of 2010 before suffering the injury. Scarlett posted 59 tackles and 6.0 sacks as a junior in 2009. Gibson is listed among the nation’s top-10 outside linebackers by ESPN (No. 6), Rivals (No. 9) and Scout (No. 10). The 2010 SuperPrep All-American posted 93 tackles and 13.5 sacks as a senior. His team combined to go 42-2 during his three varsity campaigns. McClure checks in as the nation’s No. 4 according to Scout, while SuperPrep has him at No. 6 and Rivals No. 9. He led the East Division of the Avocado League in both receiving (58 catches, 1,317 yards, 13 TDs) and interceptions (4) as a senior to earn first-team Best in the West recognition. Rigsbee ranks as high as No. 9 nationally among offensive guards by Rivals. Walls is the No. 6 safety nationally by ESPN and No. 8 according to Rivals. In addition to the seven players who earned spots in the prestigious postseason bowl games, other signees that garnered at least one All-American honor in 2010 include QB Kyle Boehm (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS), Jalil, TB Daniel Lasco (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) and TE Richard Rodgers (Worcester, MA/St. John’s HS). Boehm ranks as high as the nation’s No. 7 pro-style quarterback according to Rivals, while Jalil is listed as the nation’s No. 9 defensive tackle by Scout. Lasco is Lemming’s No. 13 running back and Rodgers is Rivals’ No. 24 as well as Lemming’s No. 9 athlete. Cal’s top national rankings by position according to Rivals are running backs (No. 3), defensive tackles (No. 10-T) and defensive ends (No. 11) and defensive backs (No. 14-T). TB Brendan Bigelow (Fresno, CA/Central East HS) and Lasco are both among the nation’s top 15 running backs, with Bigelow coming in at No. 11 by Rivals and Lemming, and Lasco’s top national ranking at his position No. 13 according to Lemming. On the defensive line, Moala (No. 2 DT Lemming, Scout, SuperPrep), Barr (No. 6 DT ESPN, Lemming), Jalil (No. 9 DT Scout) and Scarlett (No. 9 DE Rivals) all have top-10 national positional rankings. The remaining members of the recruiting class are TB C.J. Anderson (Oakland, CA/Laney College/Bethel HS), LB Nathan Broussard (Plano, TX/Plano West HS), ATH Darren Ervin (Houston, TX/Lamar HS), DB Kameron Jackson (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly HS), LB Jalen Jefferson (Ventura, CA/St. Bonaventure HS), DL Puka Lopa (Sacramento, CA/Grant HS), DB Jordan Morgan (Lakeside, AZ/Blue Ridge HS), OL Matt Williams (Liverpool, England/North Dakota State College of Science/Proctor Academy) and DB Joel Willis (Garden Grove, CA/Pacifica HS). Anderson and Williams are the two junior college transfers in the class. Ervin, Walls and Williams enrolled at Cal for the 2011 spring semester and began taking classes in January. All three are expected to participate in the team’s 2011 spring practices. Cal continued its strong national recruiting presence with nine of the 22 newcomers listing a hometown outside the state of California. In addition to the 13 student-athletes from California other states represented were Arizona, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oregon, and Texas, as well as the country of England. “We have expanded our national recruiting efforts over the last several years and continued to do so with this signing class,” explained Tedford. “We feel like there is a growing interest from national recruits in the University of California, both in our academics and in our football program’s potential. It is evident by the number of out-of-state players that we have signed in this year’s class.” The 2011 class includes 13 defensive players, eight on the offensive side of the ball and one that is being recruited as an “athlete.” “I am pleased with the hard work of our staff during the recruiting process,” said Tedford. After playing the last 88 seasons and every home game at Memorial Stadium since the facility opened for the 1923 Big Game, Cal will host its 2011 home contests at San Francisco’s AT&T Park while Memorial Stadium undergoes an extensive renovation and retrofit. The Bears will return to Memorial Stadium for their 2012 home schedule. Cal opens its 2011 season with a neutral-site non-conference game against Fresno State at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 3. The contest is not part of the previously announced 2011 season ticket package for five home games at AT&T Park. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for Cal vs. Fresno State at a later date. Visit CalFootballSF.com for more information on 2011 Cal football at AT&T Park and stadium.berkeley.edu for updates on the progress of the renovation and retrofit of Memorial Stadium. Season tickets for 2011 go on sale to general public Monday, Apr. 25, if available. Purchase your tickets online at CalBears.com or by calling (800) GO BEARS.
