The game is believed to be the first regular-season college football game to ever be played at the venue. The Bears and Bulldogs have met only twice in their history with Fresno State winning on both occasions. The Bulldogs were victorious in the first meeting between the schools in Berkeley on Sept. 9, 1995, squeaking out a 25-24 win. The last time the teams played in Fresno on Sept. 23, 2000, Fresno State was a 17-3 winner. Cal and Fresno State have not played since Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, a former Fresno State quarterback, became the head coach of the Golden Bears prior to the 2002 season. Cal Readies for AT&T Park; Back to Memorial Stadium in 2012 After playing the last 88 seasons and every home game at Memorial Stadium since the facility opened for the 1923 Big Game, Cal will host its home games outside of Berkeley for the first time in 2011 while Memorial Stadium undergoes an extensive renovation and retrofit. Cal’s 2011 home schedule at San Francisco’s AT&T Park is highlighted by visits from Pac-12 rival USC on Thursday, Oct. 13 (6 p.m. PT) and conference newcomer Utah on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Bears will also host Presbyterian in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 17, as well as Washington State (Saturday, Nov. 5) and Oregon State (Saturday, Nov. 12). Starting times and television broadcast information for all games other than USC will be announced at later dates when it becomes available. National Rankings Cal has been ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams at one point in each of the last seven seasons and eight times in nine campaigns since 2002. Bowling and Winning Bears Cal’s school-record bowl game streak of seven seasons from 2003-09 finally came to an end in 2010 when the Bears finished 5-7, which also ended the team’s school-record-tying string of eight consecutive winning campaigns. Cal posted a 5-2 (.714) record during its seven straight bowl appearances that also included a school-record four straight bowl wins from 2005-08. The Bears were 67-35 (.657) overall during their eight winning seasons in a row. Tedford at 72 Wins, Two Shy of Cal’s All-Time Mark Head coach Jeff Tedford will begin the 2011 season with 72 all-time victories at Cal. He now sports an all-time record of 72-41 (.637), only two victories behind the school’s all-time leader, Andy Smith (74, 1916-25) and one shy of James Schaeffer (73, 1909-15). His teams also won a school-record four bowl games in a row (2005-08), are 5-2 overall in bowls and have registered a 7-2 mark in Big Games to equal the legendary Pappy Waldorf’s seven victories over Stanford. Tedford became Cal’s all-time modern-era victory leader as well as its all-time leader in games coached during the 2010 season. Tedford a Standout QB and Coach at Fresno State Cal head coach Jeff Tedford was an honorable mention All-American quarterback at Fresno State in 1981 and ‘82, where he left as the school’s all-time record holder in passing yards (4,872) and touchdown passes (35) and also set single-season standards for passing yardage (2,993) and TD passes (24). Tedford also coached for six seasons at his alma mater (1992- 97), serving for the final five campaigns as the program’s offensive coordinator. He also started his coaching career at Fresno State with a two-year stint as a volunteer assistant for the Bulldogs (1987-88). New Coaches On Board for 2011 Jeff Tedford announced a series of changes to Cal’s offensive coaching staff on February 5 when Jim Michalczik returned to Cal as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach and Marcus Arroyo was hired as quarterbacks coach. At the same time, associate head coach Ron Gould was promoted to the team’s run game coordinator, while it was announced that recently hired Eric Kiesau, who had like Michalczik had previously coached at Cal, would serve as pass game coordinator. The announcement followed previous hiring of defensive backs coach Ashley Ambrose and the move of head strength and conditioning coach Mike Blasquez from men’s basketball to football. Anger, Kendricks and Schwartz Earn 2011 Preseason Honors National honor candidates Mitchell Schwartz, Bryan Anger and Mychal Kendricks have already begun picking up preseason honors prior to the 2011 campaign. All three have been recognized on the 2011 GoDaddy.com Preseason All-America Team. Schwartz was a third-team pick, while Anger and Kendricks were both honorable mention selections. Kendricks has also been named to the 2011 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List. Schwartz has started all 38 games on the Golden Bears’ offensive line over the past three seasons, including 12 during a 2010 campaign in which he was a second-team All-Pac-10 choice and anchored an offensive line that blocked for 1,167-yard rusher Shane Vereen. He was also a member of the Jewish Sports Review’s 2010 College Football All-American team and has been an honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic selection each of the past three seasons. Anger is coming off a monster 2010 season in which he earned first-team honors for the second straight year after a second- team selection in 2008. Anger broke a 23-year-old single-season Cal school record with a 45.6 yard punting average in 2010 to rank second in the Pac-10 and sixth nationally. He was a Ray Guy Award semifinalist for a second time in his career after also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Anger’s 2010 season average was 2.3 yards better than his career average of 43.3, a figure that ranks second all-time at Cal behind Scott Tabor’s 44.0 (1986-87). Tabor had held Cal’s previous single- season record with a 45.3 average in 1987. Kendricks earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors as one of the top big-play players in the league in 2010, leading Cal and ranking among the conference and national leaders with 8.5 sacks (0.71 per game, No. 2 Pac-10, No. 26-T NCAA) and 15.0 tackles for loss (1.25 per game, No. 4 Pac-10, No. 28-T NCAA). He was also tied for first in the Pac-10 with three fumble recoveries (0.25 per game), while his 66 tackles was fourth on the team and his average of 5.5 stops per game ranked No. 31 in the Pac-10. He added an interception. Kendricks heads into his senior season at Cal in 2011 as the team’s active career leader in tackles (152), tackles for loss (22.0, -85 yards), sacks (10.5, -69 yards), fumble recoveries (5) and blocked kicks (1), while tying for the team’s active lead in games played (38). His other career numbers include 18 starts, two interceptions that he has returned for 68 yards and a touchdown, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. Pac-10 Honorable Mention Honorees Cattouse, Holt and Jones Also Return In addition to early preseason honorees, three other Cal players who were selected as honorable mention All-Pac-10 choices in seniors Sean Cattouse, D.J. Holt and Marvin Jones all return. Jones led Cal in both receptions and receiving yards for the second consecutive year in 2010 with career highs of 50 catches and 765 receiving yards, while ranking second on the club with four touchdown catches. Jones ranked among Pac- 10 10 and NCAA leaders in per-game numbers for both receiving yards (63.75, No. 6 Pac-10, No. 67 NCAA) and receptions (4.17, No. 11 Pac-10, No. 92-T NCAA). Cattouse played in all 12 games with six starts and posted a career-high 59 tackles that was second among the team’s defensive backs and sixth overall. Holt started all 12 games and ranked second on the club in tackles (85) after leading the squad for much of the season. He was also tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles and tied for fourth in the Pac-10 with an average of 0.25 per contest. Holt tied for 13th in the Pac-10 with his 7.1 per-game tackle average. In addition, he was fourth on the club with 5.5 sacks (-21 yards) and tied for fourth with 2.0 sacks (-13 yards). Freshman All-American Keenan Allen Racks Up The Honors, Sets Records Wide receiver Keenan Allen racked up the honors in a record-setting rookie season, highlighted by a fourth-team Freshman All-American selection from Phil Steele and an honorable mention nod from College Football News. Allen set a Cal single- season school record for receptions by a true freshman by making 46 catches for 490 yards (both second on the team behind Marvin Jones), while picking up a team-high five-touchdown grabs in games played and nine starts.
