Description: The William Merritt SMITH Collection is a series of 42 three ring binders, each on a collateral family name, including a final index. They contain many photocopied journal articles, family group sheets and correspondence relating to Smith's various family lines. There are a few gems for the family researcher: family photographs, original letters, and other memorabilia. The family came early to New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island, then to Pennsylvania, , and Illinois. William M. Smith had traced the family back to Lysamore Isaac Sheldon Smith, notebooks 21, 22, and 23, but now, 2011, it has been pushed back on Ancestry.com to Isaac Sheldon Smith born 11 April 1765 in Suffield, Hartford, CT, died 14 September 1887 in White Creek, Washington, NY. His wife was Clara who died 24 March 1854.

Biography: William Merritt Smith was born 4 April, 1926 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, the son of Merritt Orthello Smith and Susanna Louise LINDGREN. He appears in the 1930 census, living in Tacoma with his parents, Merritt,33, and Louise, 37. William Merritt is 4 and his brother, Ralph is 5. Merritt Orthello Smith worked much of his life as an electrician for the Puget Sound Power and Light Company. He served in 1, and died 7 February, 2003, in Federal Way, King County, Washington.

William Merritt Smith married 13 June, 1948 in Oroville, Okanogan County, Washington to Mary Helen GROULX. She is found in the 1930 census living in Molson, Okanogan County, W A. Her father, Albert S. Groulx is 38 and his wife, Julia G. Groulx is 28. Albert was born in Montana of French Canadian ancestry while Julia and her parents were all born in Greece. He is a . Mary Helen was born in , and at 3 years, 8 months, was probably born in 1926.

The family was living in Federal Way, King County, Washington in 1982. Genealogy was one ofW.M. Smith's major interests, and he served as the family historian, collecting wedding announcements, funeral programs, and graduation certificates from as many descendants from his early lines as he was able. These mementos are included in the collection, the volumes titled by the of the various collateral lines. Charles Edgar Smith was born Washington County NY on 4 May, 1845, son ofIsaac Sheldon Smith and Margaret Ann Langworthy. A photocopy of a handwritten biography is the front pocket of the notebook. Charles Edgar Smith who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, 11 Sep 1861-24 Dec 1862, in the 4211d Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and from 25 November 1982 wo 25 November 1865 in Troop K, 4th U.S. Calvary. He was captured and sent to Andersonville prison, and escaped, dressing as a preacher to walk along the southern roads. He was a witness for the prosecution at the trial of Henry Wirz, the keeper of Andersonville Prison. He married Mary Tamison Burr on 2 November 1870.

This notebook contains original letters, notes, invitations, bills, Christmas Cards and wedding invitations saved by members of the Smith family, some for 200 years. The oldest seems to be a letter dated 1801, with others from the 1840s and 1850s.

Weare men tired in the service. Weare getting along fine and we only 3 or 4 men of have a full company. I want you to send me some bed comforts and a p. because I slept very cold some time for the want of them .. We are quartered in old tent where dry charges artillery was formerly camped capt. Rabbs artillery on Monday and go to 8t. Louis with the 8th regiment.of infantry and a battery and 4 companies of cavalry at Indiana holis at the present time. As soon as we get our company full and our horses we will get our arms and uniforms and equipment an go to Philadelphia or St. Louis for our training we will not be ready for active service before 2 months. We have good material for company and you hear of us before this war is over. The adjutant general says that we are to be first into regiment of cavalry. There are 4 companies of cavalry. and it come in today from Richmond they seem [?] knights to me. Remain your affectionate son, Francis M. Burr
