What Is More Kitsch Than Unrequited Love What is More Kitsch than Unrequited Love Lauren A. Boisvert They made a statue of us We never listened to it together but it was about us, I pinned it to you like a participation ribbon Regina Spektor but kept my ribbon hidden away and you never found it even though I wanted you to. “Us” Soviet Kitsch And it’s contagious 04/2004 I’ve moved to three different places in my house Sire trying to write a poem about a boy with an ugly personality who loved me in high school but I haven’t seen him in five years so what does it even matter anyway I only wrote an entire chapbook about him last year but it doesn’t matter it doesn’t matter it doesn’t matter and if I say it enough times maybe it will be true. It’s all our fault I wanted to be Regina Spektor some little brown-haired pixie with a voice like a waterfall but I didn’t get very far because I can’t play the piano and my voice is only suited for Alanis Morrissette karaoke and I have suspicious eyes like dirty olive pits and who would want a selfish little Saint Sebastian with her hands full of dirt but you were going to fit into the mold of my indie other half if I had to force you into it with “Sweet Disposition” playing in the background because 500 Days of Summer came out in the dead center of our high school years and what are teenagers if not ignorant romantics but the mad dogs biting in my stomach now all want me to forget what we were like. It’s contagious There is nothing I want more than to be put down and stay down like a sick cat poison me nine times until I lie still and every memory from 2007 to 2011 drains out of my ears like tangled string and puddles on the floor. Sweep them into a dustpan and please, throw them away. Our parts are slightly used “They” is me and “Us” is you until you didn’t want me anymore and I tore down your rusting city with my bare hands but not enough to exorcise you from the remains of myself that is your city. I only wanted to hear you play piano for me again because I am romantic at my highest and petty at my lowest and indecisive at my in-between. .

I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production.

  • Regina Spektor Kommer Till Hultsfred!

  • Sverigefavoriten Regina Spektor Är Tillbaka Med Efterlängtat Album, “What We Saw from the Cheap Seats”
2012-03-15 11:00 CET Sverigefavoriten Regina Spektor är tillbaka med efterlängtat album, “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats”,. Besöker Peace & Love festivalen i sommar. 30 maj släpps det efterlängtade albumet “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats”via Sire/Warner Bros. Records i Sverige. Första singeln “All The Rowboats”finns tillgänglig digitalt nu. “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats”spelades in under åtta veckor förra sommaren i Los Angeles. Elizondo beskriver hur det var att arbeta med albumet ;“Regina Spektor is that rare artist that continues to surprise. Just when you think you have her figured out, she knocks you out with something completely different. It’s that spirit that drives this record. Each song takes you on a journey that only Regina is capable of providing.

The present study investigates how the Soviet past has been mediated in the period between 1991 and 2012 as one element of a prominent structure of feeling in present-day Russian culture. The Soviet past is represented through different mediating arenas – cultural domains and communicative platforms in which meanings are created and circulated. The mediating arenas examined in this study include television, the Internet, fashion, restaurants, museums and the- atre. The study of these arenas has identified common ingredients which are elements of a structure of feeling of the period in question. At the same time, the research shows that the representations of the past vary with the nature of the medium and the genre. The analysis of mediations of the Soviet past in Russian contemporary culture reveals that there has been a change in the representations of the Soviet past during the past twenty years, which roughly correspond to the two decades marked by the presidencies of Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s and of Vladimir Putin in the 2000s (including Dmitrii Medvedev’s term, 2008–2012).

  • The Gulag and Soviet Society in Western Siberia, 1929-1953
THE GULAG AND SOVIET SOCIETY IN WESTERN SIBERIA, 1929-1953 by Wilson T. Bell A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Wilson T. Bell (2011) Abstract “The Gulag and Soviet Society in Western Siberia, 1929-1953” Doctor of Philosophy 2011 Wilson T. Bell Graduate Department of History University of Toronto “The Gulag and Soviet Society in Western Siberia, 1929-1953” examines the history of forced labour during the Stalin era in Western Siberia, or present-day Novosibirsk, Tomsk and Kemerovo Provinces. The region was a key site of Stalin-era repression, as it was home to numerous Gulag camps including Siblag, one of the longest lasting and most economically diversified of the many prison-labour camps scattered throughout the former Soviet Union. Western Siberia was also one of the main areas of exile for peasants and, later, displaced ethnic groups. The dissertation traces the seeming contradictions in the development of the Gulag by juxtaposing the very modern, bureaucratic “Gulag” as it appeared on paper, with the “Gulag” on the ground that relied heavily on informal practices, data falsification, and personal connections. The Gulag is thus emblematic of the “neo-traditional” modernization of the Soviet Union under Stalin. The dissertation also examines points of illicit and condoned interaction between the Gulag and surrounding population centres, thus challenging Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s seminal and enduring depiction of the Gulag as an isolated archipelago of concentration camps. Illicit interaction included widespread black-market activity, the smuggling of correspondence, sexual affairs, and, surprisingly, even instances of locals sneaking into the camps to use camp facilities.
