From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Empezaron su andadura en 1991, dos años antes de debutar discográficamente con "Tindersticks I", álbum en el que ya mostraron muchos de los rasgos distintivos que han marcaron su trayectoria. Con arreglos de y para sibaritas y la voz de barítono de Stuart Staples, sus canciones se lanzaban por las sendas de Gainsbourg y Hazlewood. Al frente, un "crooner" distinguido para los momentos melancólicos y dándole cobertura, una ristra de de instrumentos que flotaban o lloraban -violines, carillón, trompeta, vibráfono, órgano Hammond...-. Del excelso pop de cámara de sus primeros tres álbumes, recibidos por la crítica con los brazos abiertos, pasaron a arrimarse al soul con "Simple Pleasure" (1999) y "Can Our Love..." (2001), demostrando a los escépticos que también sabían mantener el listón muy alto cuando aligeraban el equipaje y que su libro de estilo no era tan estático como les achacaban. Aunque en 2005, cuando Staples inició su carrera en solitario, hubo rumores de ruptura, se quedaron en eso, despejados por su séptimo trabajo, "The Hungry Saw" (2008). Ook op het Europese continent begint Kiwanuka’s naam Kyteman – The Hermit Sessions Daniel Lohues – Hout Moet Erwin Nyhoff – Take Your Time rond te zingen. De single Home Again was al prominent aanwezig in De Wereld Draait Door en staat bovendien op nummer 1 in België. Is het, nu de debuut-cd Home Again zo’n beetje in de winkel ligt, al deze commotie waard? Ja, zeker. In feite is dit rijk geproduceerde en sterk ouderwetse soul- album zó sterk dat de single Home Again nog wel samenvloeien in een warme sound. De soul, blues en het minst sterke liedje lijkt. De kracht zit hem niet folk van zangers als Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway en alleen in Kiwanuka’s op klassieke jaren zeventig soul Terry Callier dringt diep door in schitterende pareltjes 3 Doors Down – Away From Rufus Wainwright – Amy Winehouse - Frank leest geschoeide liedjes en diens warme stemgeluid, als Tell Me A Tale, Any Day Will Do Fine, de Otis The Sun Milwaukee At Last! maar ook vooral in de geweldige arrangementen Redding-ballad Rest en de imposante afsluiter Worry die strijkers, houtblazers en dwarsfluiten laten Walks Beside.

Rares sont les groupes de rock indépendant dont la naissance fut aussi flamboyante que celle des Tindersticks, formation anglaise révélée en 1993 avec un premier album dont la splendeur n’a d’égale que l’ampleur : particulièrement grisant et long en bouche, invitant à une dégustation sans modération, ce disque initiatique contient pas moins de vingt et une chansons, la première portant un titre – « Nectar » – qui peut tout aussi bien s’appliquer à l’ensemble. Sublimé par la voix de velours si élégamment traînante du chanteur Stuart Staples, ce nectar musical s’écoule en de capiteuses ballades qui, exhaussant d’intenses arômes de soul spectrale, de pop orchestrale et de folk-blues ancestral, se situent quelque part entre Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, Terry Callier, Scott Walker et Tom Waits. Nombreux sont alors les auditeurs, en particulier en France, qui succombent au charme à la fois subtil et intense d’une musique, sinon anachronique, du moins en rupture franche avec les courants dominants (grunge, brit-pop, shoegaze) de l’époque. Le groupe tape notamment dans l’oreille avertie de la cinéaste Claire Denis, suite à quoi va se nouer une relation d’étroite complicité.
