The collection contains many of his own copies of his books and essays, published and unpublished. These are often annotated and occasionally contain letters or other documents. There are also papers about him collected by Irene Speller Pickard during the writing of her book, 'Memories of James Rendel Harris'; and papers of Harris's nephew, John Major, concerning their research on the Egyptian origins of English place names, which was Harris's main research interest in the last years of his life. Arrangement: The papers have been divided into three groups (sub-fonds): papers created by Rendel Harris himself, and papers about him collected by Irene Pickard and by his nephew John Major. The first group has been arranged by record type into five series: press cuttings and research notes; notebooks; articles and lectures; correspondence; and books. The collection was originally listed using references beginning G Har. The first assignment I give the students is to read through the entire Book of Acts and note each encounter that believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have with the unsaved in the book. The students are to make a list with: (1) the Christians who are doing the witnessing, (2) the unbelievers bring witnessed to, (3) what the apologetics are that the believers are using, (4) and what the response of the unsaved is to their message. The two main apologetics used by the Early Church in the Book of Acts are: first, the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ; and second, the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Psalm 16 is quoted on two occasions in the Book of Acts in order to demonstrate that the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus was the fulfillment of this psalm, predicted almost a thousand years before it happened. The first time the psalm is quoted is in Acts 2, Peter’s sermon on the day of Shavuot (Pentecost). The second time it is quoted is in Acts 13 when the Apostle Paul preached in the synagogue of Psidia Antioch on his first missionary journey. Superscription The superscription of Psalm 16 reads, michtam le David. The verbal root for the word “michtam” is to inscribe, to engrave, or write, like on a stele. One gets the impression of an inscription on a victory stele. A stele is an upright stone slab or pillar that has an inscription or some kind of design on it that serves as a monument for propaganda purposes or for veneration. -

(bestoflifeonline.com) On my first study visit to Israel, we had a Palestinian guide named Michael. Our driver’s name was Mafouz. Michael was a learned Palestinian Christian. Mafouz spoke very little English, but he was fearless in city traffic and narrow streets. He was very fast on the freeway. When it was time to depart one site and head for another, Michael would say, “Mafouz, push gaz!” And off we would go on another adventure. Our guide referred to Israel, especially Jerusalem, as the place of stones. He was speaking of the stone altars built by the patriarchs and the piles of commemorative rocks put up at times and places important to God’s people, as when Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River. Michael noted that the massive walls of Jericho, Jerusalem and Hebron are all made of stone. Also, stoning was the method of execution for Israelites who broke the Law. Even the courtyard where Jesus was tried, Gabbatha or LIthostrotos (meaning pavement) is composed of stones worn smooth by the feet of ancient peoples. Stones are everywhere in the Holy Land. Today we approach the names of Jesus that refer to the stones of the ANE. He is called the Rock of Ages. He is also called the Chief Cornerstone. If we took time to list all the symbolic and metaphorical names of God in Scripture, we would be here all day. -

'An Extremely Dangerous Book'? James Hope Moulton's Religions
‘A much-needed Tract for the Times’ or ‘an extremely dangerous book’? James Hope Moulton’s Religions and Religion (1913) Martin Wellings On 4 April 1917 the British passenger steamship SS City of Paris, travelling from Karachi to Liverpool, was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Gulf of Lions, and sank with considerable loss of life. Among the passengers were two eminent scholars, the Quaker James Rendel Harris and the Wesleyan Methodist James Hope Moulton. Both survived the sinking of the ship, but Moulton died of exposure three days later and was buried at sea.1 Rendel Harris wrote and published a moving account of Moulton’s heroic behaviour in the life-boat, sharing the burdens of rowing and baling, and ministering to Indian crew members.2 The incident became something of a cause célèbre, an example of ‘[t]he ruthlessness of our enemies, unrestrained by moral scruples or humane principles’.3 Paying tribute to his friend and colleague in the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, Arthur Samuel Peake recorded the ‘tragic irony’ of the death under such circumstances of an eloquent advocate of peace and of a scholar whose international reputation in New Testament studies, built on his Grammar of New Testament Greek (1906) was signalled by plaudits from Harnack, a doctorate from the University of Berlin and a long-standing academic friendship with Adolf Deissmann.4 James Hope Moulton, however, was more than a New Testament scholar. His presence in the dangerous waters of the Mediterranean in the spring of 1917 came about through his second area of acknowledged expertise, the history and thought of Zoroastrianism, which took him to India for eighteen months’ work with the Parsee community under the auspices of the Indian YMCA.5 In his life and in his writings Moulton brought together biblical scholarship, a fascination with the evolution of religion and a passionate enthusiasm for Christian missions. -
Who Was Jesus of Nazareth?
WHO WAS JESUS OF NAZARETH? Craig L. Blomberg1 Jesus of Nazareth has been the most influential person to walk this earth in human history. To this day, more than two billion people worldwide claim to be his followers, more than the number of adherents to any other religion or worldview. Christianity is responsible for a disproportionately large number of the humanitarian advances in the history of civilization—in education, medicine, law, the fine arts, working for human rights, and even in the natural sciences (based on the belief that God designed the universe in an orderly fashion and left clues for people to learn about it).2 But just who was this individual and how can we glean reliable information about him? A recent work on popular images of Jesus in America alone identifies eight quite different portraits: “enlightened sage,” “sweet savior,” “manly redeemer,” “superstar,” “Mormon elder brother,” “black Moses,” “rabbi,” and “Oriental Christ.”3 Because these depictions contradict each other at various points, they cannot all be equally accurate. Historians must return to the ancient evidence for Jesus and assess its merits. This evidence falls into three main categories: non-Christian, historic Christian, and syncretistic (a hybrid of Christian and non-Christian perspectives). Non-Christian Evidence for Jesus An inordinate number of websites and blogs make the wholly unjustified claim that Jesus never existed. Biblical scholars and historians who have investigated this issue in detail are virtually unanimous today in rejecting this view, regardless of their theological or ideological perspectives. A dozen or more references to Jesus appear in non-Christian Jewish, Greek, and Roman sources in the earliest centuries of the Common Era (i.e., approximately from the birth of Jesus onward, as Christianity and Judaism began to overlap chronologically). -

We concluded our third lecture with a short mention of the beginnings that are just being made in the exegesis of the Greek Old Testament. The exegesis of the Greek New Testament can look back upon a histbry of many centuries. The fact, however, that the New Testament as distinguished from the Greek Old Testament possesses an international exegetical literature of its own which promises. soon to attain unmanageable dimensions, is not necessarily a proof of a revival of interest in its philological investigation. The more recent commentaries, indeed, leave much to be desired from the philological point of view. How greatly the exegesis of the New Testament is able to profit by the progress of classical archaeology in the widest sense is shown by the writings of Sir William Ramsay,2 the Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans by Hans Lietz mann,3 the Commentary on the Gospel according to St. Matthew by Th. Zahn 4 and by W. C.
