Our first stop is the important city of Hazor, famously conquered by Joshua during the time of the Conquest and again by Deborah during the time of the Judges. Leaving Hazor, we travel to ancient Israel’s northernmost city, Dan, where King Jeroboam provoked the prophets’ ire by installing a shrine housing a golden calf. We then visit the springs of nearby Banias, known in Jesus’ day as Caesarea Philippi, the location where Peter famously said, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” As we turn southward again, we visit the famous zealot outpost of Gamla before stopping at Kursi, the site where Jesus cast the demons into a herd of swine.

Beth Jacob's support of his Jewish identity initiatives makes a direct impact upon a challenged Israeli society, in which an alarming number of Jews are disconnected from their Jewish heritage. Recent Highlights: Coming of Age with Meaning The Bar or Bat Mitzvah represents a major milestone in traditional Jewish life, but since Israeli teens from secular families are, by and large, not connected to any kind of synagogue, the milestone is traditionally marked by a big party or a trip abroad - with little (if any) reflection on its significance. In order to provide secular children with an opportunity to learn about the pivotal lifecycle event and celebrate it with meaning, Chaim created a seven-week program for the 45 seventh graders at Gamla, the local secular school. It is a testament to his warm and unthreatening approach that the school's administration not only welcomes his program with open arms, but enables him to expand upon it from year to year. "The program is fun and informative, not at all coercive," explains Dalia Yarkoni, one of the Seventh Grade homeroom teachers. "Chaim provides the students with a connection to their heritage and a sense of themselves as links in the longtime Jewish chain – with ramifications not only for their present lives, but for their future, as well.

    PSALM 16: Gethsemane, Gabbatha, Golgotha, the “Garden Tomb,” and the Glory Gordon Franz Introduction On occasions I teach a class on Christian Apologetics. The first assignment I give the students is to read through the entire Book of Acts and note each encounter that believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have with the unsaved in the book. The students are to make a list with: (1) the Christians who are doing the witnessing, (2) the unbelievers bring witnessed to, (3) what the apologetics are that the believers are using, (4) and what the response of the unsaved is to their message. The two main apologetics used by the Early Church in the Book of Acts are: first, the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ; and second, the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Psalm 16 is quoted on two occasions in the Book of Acts in order to demonstrate that the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus was the fulfillment of this psalm, predicted almost a thousand years before it happened. The first time the psalm is quoted is in Acts 2, Peter’s sermon on the day of Shavuot (Pentecost). The second time it is quoted is in Acts 13 when the Apostle Paul preached in the synagogue of Psidia Antioch on his first missionary journey. Superscription The superscription of Psalm 16 reads, michtam le David. The verbal root for the word “michtam” is to inscribe, to engrave, or write, like on a stele. One gets the impression of an inscription on a victory stele. A stele is an upright stone slab or pillar that has an inscription or some kind of design on it that serves as a monument for propaganda purposes or for veneration.

    Day 6 Wednesday March 8 2023 Masada Ein-Gedi Mount of Olives Palm Sunday Walk Tomb of Prophets Garden of Gethsemane Masada Suggested Reading: The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman // Josephus, War of the Jews (book 7) Masada is located on a steep and isolated hill on the edge of the Judean desert mountains, on the shores of the Dead Sea. It was the last and most important fortress of the great Jewish rebellion against Rome (66-73 AD), and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Israel. The last stand of the Jewish freedom fighters ended in tragic events in its last days, which were thoroughly detailed in the accords of the Roman historian of that period, Josephus Flavius. Masada became one of the Jewish people's greatest icons, and a symbol of humanity's struggle for freedom from oppression. Israeli soldiers take an oath here: "Masada shall not fall again." Masada is located on a diamond-shaped flat plateau (600M x 200M, 80 Dunam or 8 Hectares). The hill is surrounded by deep gorges, at a height of roughly 440M above the Dead sea level. During the Roman siege it was surrounded with a 4KM long siege wall (Dyke), with 8 army camps (A thru G) around the hill. (bestoflifeonline.com) On my first study visit to Israel, we had a Palestinian guide named Michael. Our driver’s name was Mafouz. Michael was a learned Palestinian Christian. Mafouz spoke very little English, but he was fearless in city traffic and narrow streets. He was very fast on the freeway. When it was time to depart one site and head for another, Michael would say, “Mafouz, push gaz!” And off we would go on another adventure. Our guide referred to Israel, especially Jerusalem, as the place of stones. He was speaking of the stone altars built by the patriarchs and the piles of commemorative rocks put up at times and places important to God’s people, as when Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River. Michael noted that the massive walls of Jericho, Jerusalem and Hebron are all made of stone. Also, stoning was the method of execution for Israelites who broke the Law. Even the courtyard where Jesus was tried, Gabbatha or LIthostrotos (meaning pavement) is composed of stones worn smooth by the feet of ancient peoples. Stones are everywhere in the Holy Land. Today we approach the names of Jesus that refer to the stones of the ANE. He is called the Rock of Ages. He is also called the Chief Cornerstone. If we took time to list all the symbolic and metaphorical names of God in Scripture, we would be here all day.
