Through the analysis of compositions and performances by artists in Japan and the United States, I reveal how Japanese musical forms like hōgaku and matsuri-bayashi have been melded with non-Japanese styles such as jazz. I also demonstrate how the art form first appeared as performed by large ensembles, but later developed into a wide variety of other modes of performance that included small ensembles and soloists. Additionally, I discuss the spread of wadaiko from Japan to the United States, examining the effect of interactions between artists in the two countries on the creation of repertoire; in this way, I reveal how a musical genre develops in an intercultural environment. -

A., The University of British Columbia, 2003 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Kim Noriko Kobayashi, 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis is a survey of the development and dissemination of kumi-daiko ensembles in Canada, with the focus on their membership, gender, drums and repertoire, and links to the Japanese Canadian community. A case study of the group Katari Taiko’s formative stage is presented to highlight key issues that confronted kumi-daiko ensembles in the past. With the emergence of exclusive groups in the form of pan-Asian, all-women kumi-daiko organizations, an inspection of Katari Taiko’s prominent female representation highlights gender and feminist issues and the reconfiguring of gender constructs and portrayals. I will argue that these exclusive female spaces offer a refuge for queer members as well as an avenue to express their sexual identity through creative and artistic means. This discussion is complemented by an organological overview of drum construction, general taiko drum taxonomy, and an update on contemporary taiko drum manufacturing which includes a socio-historical portrait of the Burakumin (Japan’s exclusive traditional drum makers) and North American taiko drummers who are forced out of necessity to become ingenious drum makers. This thesis concludes with the referencing of traditional Japanese music in the kumi-daiko repertoire as discussed by prominent drummers and ensembles followed by an analysis of Seiichi Tanaka’s piece “Matsuri” in the context of its different renditions by Canadian kumi-daiko ensembles. -

"The "culturalpot-pourri" which is Canada....." "Canada is a rich collage ofcultural diversity....." "Life in Alberta is enriched by its diverse cultural heritage....." "Cultural diversity b maintained through the desire to assimilate various ethnic groups while maintaining their individuality and preserving their heritage....." Canadians hear such statements daily. It is, in fact, a principle by which Canadians define themselves. Now this desire is given expression in the third of a series of annual World-Music concerts. Ethnic musicians from Edmonton and area have been invited to participate in an evening of ethnic music presented under the auspices of the Department of Music. The World-Music concerts honour Moses Asch and the Asch family on the occasion of their donation of the complete catalogue of Folkways recordings henceforth known as the Moses and Frances Asch Collection. Moses Asch was the founder of Folkways Records, the world's largest commercially available collection of folk and tribal music. The objectives of the World-Music concert series are manifold. First, the commitment of the Department of Music to scholarly research in ethnomusicology - the study of ethnic musics - has been demonstrated through the appointment of a full-time member of faculty whose teaching and research responsibilities are dedicated to the furtherance of knowledge in the field. Second, the World-Music concert series will provide a forum for exposure of ethnic music to Edmonton and area audiences. -
One Earth Tour: Japan Kaguyahime Opens at Opéra National De Paris
on tour eNEWS Issue 7 June 2010 Kaguyahime Opens at Opéra National de Paris on June 11 Modern composer Maki Ishii’s musical suite Kaguyahime, which debuted in 1984, will be performed by the Paris Opera Ballet as a new production at the Opéra Bastille in June and July, 2010. It will be directed by Jiri Kylian, one of modern ballet’s most celebrated choreographers. Kaguyahime features seven members of Kodo, who have just set off to France to join the Paris Opera Ballet, Touring Kansai, Chubu and Kanto in May, and from Nikko to Hokkaido in June, western percussionists, and a gagaku Kodo brings fresh compositions and traditional favorites to Japan this Spring (old Japanese court music) ensemble. This will mark the first time that a taiko group has ever taken the stage at One Earth Tour: Japan “Akatsuki” the Opéra National de Paris. Asian Women Kick Ass: A Study of Gender Issues within Canadian Kumi-Daiko Kim Noriko Kobayashi, University of British Columbia The development of this high density of female participants in Vancouver’s kumi-daiko will be discussed in a case study format, examining Canada’s first kumi-daiko ensemble, Katari Taiko, and the emergence of feminist stylized kumi-daiko. Focusing on the formative days of Katari Taiko is instrumental in highlighting the framework that has continued to foster the large numbers of women engaged in kumi- daiko within the local area, if not the greater area of western Canada. Early Katari Taiko members played an important role in disseminating kumi-daiko throughout Canada via their performances and presentation of taiko workshops.2 The taiko workshops that Katari Taiko delivered across Canada, in addition to taiko instruction, offered models of kumi-daiko organizational structure and incorporated discussions of their group philosophy (Uyehara Hoffman: personal communication, 2005). Factors that encourage female participants to taiko will be examined as well as the possible reasons for the lack of male participants. Central to taiko’s appeal for Asian women is the deconstruction of gender/racial stereotypes and the reconfiguration of gender constructs, and issues of gaining visibility, cultural representation, and self-empowerment. The Arts and Education Program of the Fine Arts Center is sponsored by About Taikoza Taikoza is a Japanese Taiko drum group that uses the powerful rhythms of the Taiko drums to create an electrifying energy that carries audiences in a new dimension of excitement. The taiko is a large, barrel-like drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Drawing from Japan's rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza performers also play the shakuhachi and the fue (both bamboo flutes) and the koto (a 13 string instrument). Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the modern day renaissance of Japanese Taiko in the 1960’s and introduced Taiko to the world). Taikoza’s love for taiko drumming transcends national boundaries bringing new energy to this ancestral form. Taikoza has performed in Europe, and Asia. The group has also appeared on the History Channel and The Last Samurai DVD set. Taikoza’s goal is to educate people about the exciting art form of Taiko and introduce them to Japanese culture. Taikoza was formed in 1995 by some of the original members of Ondekoza, the group responsible for the Taiko renaissance in the 1960’s. -

Yuujou Takuya Taniguchi & Walter Lang Das Trommel und Piano Ereignis aus Japan und Deutschland heißt Yuujou, Freundschaft. Die beiden Künstler sind seit Jahren befreundet und musizieren so harmonisch, als ob sie im gleichen Kulturraum aufgewachsen sind. Ganz im Gegenteil, denn der Taiko Trommler Takuya Taniguchi ist in der japanischen Provinz Fukui großgeworden und der Pianist Walter Lang in einem kleinen schwäbischen Städtchen. Nicht nur auf der Landkarte prallen Gegensätze aufeinander, sondern auch musikalisch. Mächtige Sounds und übergroße Klankwolken der Taiko Trommeln treffen auf zarte lyrische Pianoimprovisationen. Takuya Taniguchi - taiko drums Takuya Taniguchi, geboren 1983 in Fukui, Japan, lebt seit 2011 in München und Tokyo Den Pfad seines Meisters EITETSU HAYASHI fortsetzend, dem berühmtesten Solo-Trommler Japans (Mitbegründer von KODO und ONDEKOZA, der als Einziger Solokonzerte in der Carnegie Hall und der Berliner Philarmonie gab), schlägt Takuya Taniguchi in seiner Kunst Brücken zwischen der Tradition vom Taiko, den japanischen Trommeln und den verschiedenen Kulturen in der Welt. Seit seinem dritten Lebensjahr Taiko. Mit 16 Jahren gründet er die Taikogruppe ‚TENRYU-DAIKO‘. Odaiko New England: Taiko For Educators Thunder About the Performance Odaiko New England demonstrates the ancient art form of taiko (Japanese drumming) and its importance in Japanese culture. This energetic and engaging program highlights kumi- daiko (ensemble drumming) and combines traditional taiko rhythms with dynamic movement and rhythms from other musical traditions. Students explore kata (drumming technique) and the concept of kiai (vocalizing energy), and also join the performers on stage to play the taiko drums. Program Learning Goals 1.To experience and learn about the techniques of Japanese taiko drumming. 2.To explore the history of Japanese taiko drumming, and its historical and contemporary role in Japanese culture and traditions.
