Summerhill, Advisor Eugenia Romero Juan Zevallos Aguilar Copyright by Grant Daryl Moss 2010 ABSTRACT For some, it is a common conception that if a poet includes politics in his poetry then he has degraded it. For others, politics must be included in poetry or it has no purpose. The purpose of this dissertation is to debunk the myths that surround political commitment and poetry; to build up the relationship between poetry and politics. This dissertation explores the simultaneous development of politics and poetics in three Spanish-language poets: Rafael Alberti, Nicolás Guillén, and Pablo Neruda. I argue that the simultaneous development was nurtured by the Second Spanish Republic (1931- 1939). Beginning in these years, Alberti, Guillén, and Neruda strove to tackle the challenge of committing to their own independent poetic projects and to their politics simultaneously. Later, these three poets maintained their Communist Party affiliation until their deaths and produced collection after collection of quality poetry. Despite the differences in their overall poetic trajectories and projects, the ability to maneuver between politics and poetry without sacrificing either one is common among them. The poetry of these three artists is not simply political propaganda nor is it ―poetry for poetry‘s sake.‖ In other words, the poetry strives to bring together issues such as communism, anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, class struggle, worker‘s rights among others; yet for these three authors these topics strengthen their poetics and challenge traditional thought about what poetry is. Because of their unique experiences during the time of the Second Spanish Republic in Spain, each author explicitly turned to denounce the ii injustices that the opposing Franquist forces had committed against the Republic, a place that had given more rights to workers. After the fall of the Republic in 1939, Alberti, Guillén, and Neruda continued to intertwine their politics with their poems only in a less obvious manner.     Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread.

Cuba has declared the Hurricane Alarm Phase today in seven provinces in the country, with 5.2 million people (46% of the Cuban population) affected. More than 1,130,000 people (10% of the Cuban population) are expected to be evacuated to protection centers or houses of neighbors or relatives.     HUIDOBRO AND THE NOTION OF TRANSLATABILITY Daniel Balderston Tulane University In one of his manifestoes, “El creacionismo” (published in French in 1924), the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro claims that the new “creationist” poetry should be translatable and universal (1:736). A desire for universality in poetry is not unusual - poets and critics like Shakespeare, Sidney, Shelley, Hoelderlin and Rilke have spoken of the cosmic implications of the poet’s act - but the intent to write poems that will be translatable is an anomaly in the history of poetics. We need only recall Frost’s dictum that poetry is “that which gets lost from verse and prose in translation” (Burnshaw, xi), or Whitman’s lines - The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and may loitering. I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world. (89) to realize that poets have not intended to express themselves in ways that are readily translated. Even those poets who have written in more than one language have emphasized the differences between languages more than the possibility of transferring a text intact from one language to another. Thus, we find Rilke writing to Lou -- 60 -- Andreas-Salomé in the very year Huidobro published his manifestoes, “a few times I even set myself the same theme in French and in German, which then, to my surprise, developed differently from each language: which would speak very strongly against the naturalness of translation” (2:336). Given that the elections have just happened in Italy and produced yet another kind of populist shock, we thought is was a good idea to bring him in and have a chat. Good afternoon, David. DAVID KERTZER: Thanks for having me, Mark. MARK BLYTH: OK, so let's try and put this in context for people. Italy's kicked off. Now, we could talk about what's happening right now today, but to try and get some context on this, I want to take us back a little bit. This is not the first time the Italian political system-- indeed the whole Italian state-- has kind of blown up. I want to go back to 1994. That's the last time things really disintegrated. Start there, and then walk forward, so then we can talk more meaningfully about the election. So I'm going to invite you to just take us back to 1994.     Axis Internationalism: Spanish Health Experts and the Nazi ‘New Europe’, 1939–1945 DAVID BRYDAN Abstract Many of the forms and practices of interwar internationalism were recreated under the auspices of the Nazi ‘New Europe’. This article will examine these forms of ‘Axis internationalism’ by looking at Spanish health experts’ involvement with Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Despite the ambiguous relationship between the Franco regime and the Axis powers, a wide range of Spanish health experts formed close ties with colleagues from Nazi Germany and across Axis and occupied Europe. Many of those involved were relatively conservative figures who also worked with liberal international health organisations in the pre- and post-war eras. Despite their political differences, their opposing attitudes towards eugenics and the tensions caused by German hegemony, Spanish experts were able to rationalise their involvement with Nazi Germany as a mutually-beneficial continuation of pre-war international health cooperation amongst countries united by a shared commitment to modern, ‘totalitarian’ forms of public health. Despite the hostility of Nazi Germany and its European collaborators to both liberal and left-wing forms of internationalism, this phenomenon suggests that the ‘New Europe’ deserves to be studied as part of the wider history of internationalism in general and of international health in particular. Porque seguimos hablando de ellos, porque los tenemos incorporados al idioma (¿acaso a un hombre forzudo no se lo llama un hércules?, ¿acaso las palabras Eros o Venus no siguen evocando al amor y al deseo?), porque son la fuente de la que seguimos nutriéndonos los escritores, los guionistas de cine, los inventores de historias del mundo entero, y también los pintores, los arquitectos, los músicos. En los dibujos animados, en las películas de aventuras, en las estatuas, en los edificios, los mitos griegos y romanos están presentes y nos saludan (o nos acechan) todos los días. Cada época ha sentido la necesidad de volver a contar a su manera, de acuerdo con su propia sensibilidad, estas historias en las que parecen concentrarse al mismo tiempo todo el poder de la fantasía y todas las contradicciones de la razón y la sensibilidad humanas. Yo las leí por primera vez en un libro para chicos que estaba muy de moda allá por los años cincuenta del siglo pasado: El Tesoro de la Juventud. Y me enamoré para siempre de los héroes y los dioses, pero también de los monstruos, con sus múltiples cabezas, su aliento de fuego, sus cabellos de serpiente. Por eso sentí una enorme alegría cuando empecé a leer y estudiar los mitos para tratar de escribirlos una vez más a la manera del siglo XXI.
