May 4: The English Martyrs In England, the 40 canonized martyrs previously celebrated on 25 October are now included with the 85 Beatified Martyrs in a single celebration of “The English Martyrs” on this date, chosen because it marks the first Reformation martyrdom (three Carthusians at Tyburn in 1535). In Wales, the two celebrations remain distinct. Two of the 85 beati have connections with Herefordshire: Roger Cadwallador (b. at Stretton Sugwas, near Hereford, in 1568; executed at Leominster, 27 August 1610) was an English Roman Catholic priest. Nicholas Wheeler, seminary priest from Herefordshire, executed at Tyburn 1586, aged 36. May 20: St Æthelbert, Martyr Æthelbert (d. 794) was King of the East Angles, at the time when England existed as seven kingdoms. Brought up in piety, he was a man of singular humility. Urged to marry, he declared his preference for a life of celibacy, but at length consented to woo Altrida (Alfrida), daughter of Offa, King of the Mercians.

  • Chapel, in Burgess Street, Was Erected on the Site of an Old Chapel Dating Back for 200 Years
    LEOMINSTER. The Congregational (or Independe1zt) Chapel, in Burgess street, was erected on the site of an old chapel dating back for 200 years. The chapel was opened for service in I 867. It is a brick building, with frees tone dressings, in the Decorated style of Gothic architecture. A tower with spire rises on the north-west angle to a height of nearly So feet, and forms a prominent object from all parts of the town. The total cost of the building was about £1,600. The Wesleyan Chapel, also in Burgess street, was erected in 1861 near the site of a former· structure. It has accommodation for 300 persons. The total cost of building (including site) was about £1 ,ooo. There is a mission room and Sunday school in Rain­ bow street. The Morav£an Chapel, in South street, was erected in 1759. The schools, which adjoin the chapel, were almost entirely rebuilt in 1874 at a cost of about £250. They are built of red-brick with Bath stone facings. The F1·£ends' Meet-ing House, in South street, is a plain building of red brick. The Baptist Chapel, in Etnam street, was erected in 1771, and further restored in 1857 and I 884. There is a burial-ground attached. The Pr£m£tz"ve Methodist Chapel, in Green lane, was erected in 1873 near the site of a former building. It is built of red brick with Bath stone dressings, and cost about £soo. The Plymouth Brethren meet at the Waterloo House, at the bottom of Broad street, where they have a large room for public worship, with a number of smaller rooms, furnished for the accommodation of the brethren from a distance who attend the various conferences.

You can see the complete list on the notice board in the porch. We congratulate local pupils who recently received their A level and GCSE examination results. We pray that the Lord will bless them as they continue preparing for adult life. The future is in the hands of the young. It’s important to show them how confident we are in their ability to better the world we hand on to them. As summer comes gradually to an end, let’s pray for a good autumn that will benefit our local farmers. Let’s also thank God for the harvest and all the good things he gives us each day that make our lives so fulfilling and enjoyable. It’s good to give thanks to the Lord and to recognise how generous and loving he is. That’s why we use the Greek word for thank you and thanksgiving to describe our central act of worship, the Mass, by calling it the Eucharist.
