URGENT ACTION NEEDED Upcoming HHS regulations are detrimental to The Catholic Church for not providing abortion and pregnancy prevention coverage in their insurance plans for employees. This is a national problem. The seasons really change fast during this time of the year. Not long ago it was Advent, then Christmas and now we are in a short span of Ordinary Time. Soon, February 22nd, we will be entering Lent—a time for fasting, almsgiving and prayer. Use the next two weeks to prepare for a good Lent. Let’s first concentrate on how we can improve ourselves as individuals; more prayer time; praying the Rosary, praying the Stations of the Cross, Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, and attending the Penance Service on March 27. But let us not forget our families. Include them in your prayer time and let’s spend more quality time with our families. Also, during this Lenten Season let’s do something positive for our council—be active and recruit a new member. Vivat Jesus Deacon Fred Bourland

Brothers, the new year is well under way and we are already into action! The postulant dinner was a huge success again this year. We had 14 postulants and raised $2600 dollars for their education fund. The blood drive is scheduled for next week and our goal is 100 pints. Encourage your kids that are young adults to come out and make a donation. The Life Chain was held in out on Lebanon Road to call attention to the sanctity of life, and was the best showing and the most people in a few years. The best part was the participation by the young people of our parish. This brings me to the main point of this greeting: You have heard and read about the current government proposal to have all employers provide medical plans to their employees that include treatments that include the morning after pill and abortions. I would ask each of you to become informed about this issue and make your voices heard. This is an important opportunity for us to rally together as catholic men and clearly state what we believe. There are times when I feel strongly that we Knights of Columbus are the ones that must stand when no one else will. This is one of those times. Our bishops need our support. Our local priests need our support. Our families and communities need our leadership and to see that we are not weak and will lift up and honor human life, in all forms. It is an honor to serve and be a part of a group of such dedicated and worthy and upstanding men. Here is the website: http://www.usccb.org/ Vivat Jesus! David

Jan 3rd 2nd Degree We conducted a 2nd degree ceremony at our January business meeting. This was an excellent opportunity for those that are 1st degree to start the new year by advancing in the degrees. Congratulations to Tim Winecoff, J. D. Jan 7 Altar Server Party The annual altar server party was held after Mass on Jan 7th Jan 16 New Member Dinner There was a dinner on January 16th for all those that went through the 1st degree in 2010 or 2011. Invitations were sent out mid-December with a request for RSVP. New members and their families plus the officers/directors and their spouses attended. Officers and directors had an opportunity to explain their functions and invited the new members to sign up for one of the programs. Jan 21 Wine Tasting Wine tasting of locally prepared wines. This event was held in the HFC following Saturday Mass. Feb 4 Postulant and Clergy Appreciation Dinner Our annual dinner was held again in the HFC to recognize and honor our clergy. The dinner commenced with an Italian dinner followed by a dessert auction. Members and the KCLA furnished cakes for the auction. This event raises funds important to the postulants in meeting their financial needs. The auction raised $2600 for the postulants. Thanks to all that bid on or furnished a cake. Feb 6 1st Degree Held A first degree was held at the February business meeting. Please welcome our newest member, Richie Frazier. Recognition Trustee Tom Doss was awarded an Honorary Life Membership, fulfilling the requirements of age and length of service (25 years). Congratulations, Tom.

PRO-LIFE Prayer vigils still continue on Saturday mornings at the abortion clinic next to Grace Pregnancy Center with a rosary at 6:45 am. Contact Brother John Norfleet if you need directions. Safe Haven Safe Haven is a facility in St. Patrick parish that provides a safe home for up to five families. The chaperone’s duties are to make sure the doors are locked in the evening and that the residents are observing the lodging rules. The residents take care of cleanup and watching the children. St. Stephens provides the evening supper and chaperone(s) the first Friday of each month. The chaperone is to be there from Friday 5:30pm to Saturday 7:00am. Chaperone(s) are provided a separate dorm room with facilities for up to two people. If you would like to try it, but want someone to go with you the first time, just let GK David or DGK Kent know. We would like to schedule the chaperones. If you can be a chaperone, even if just once during the year, please notify DGK Kent. DGK Kent will keep the schedule so we don’t have to scramble each month. Husband/wife teams accepted. Monday Night Rosary The Council continues to sponsor a rosary service for those serving in Armed Forces and for the sick and distressed of the St. Stephen Community. Each Brother Knight is encouraged to participate in the Monday night Rosary. It is conducted every Monday at 6:15pm in the Church. First Friday Eucharistic Adoration Please make it a point to attend at least one First Friday Adoration this year in the Church at 7:00pm. Our goal is for every member to attend at least one adoration this year. No role will be taken; it is on the honor system. 2nd/3rd/4th Degree If you need to attend the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Degree, please contact either GK David Morrissey or PSD Mike Porter. You do not have to wait until our council hosts a degree ceremony –you can attend another council’s ceremony if needed. 2nd, 3rd and 4th Degree Schedules Check the online schedule at the State KofC website for current dates or ask GK David Morrissey on availability. The degree schedule can be viewed online at: www.kofc-tn.org/ Click here to go to : State of Tennessee Knights of Columbus Membership-PSD Mike Porter, chairman All Brother and Sir Knights are encouraged to sign up a new Knight. Make it a goal to approach at least one person this year about joining the Knights of Columbus. Set-up and Take-down Crews FDM Bill Gunter leads the set-up crew. Currently he has a small crew and can always use some additional hands. BK Howard Hotard leads the Take-down crew. Same applies to the number needed. We always need help setting up the Family Center and then putting up the chairs and tables and cleanup afterwards when we have an event. We understand if you can’t work every event. Any help is appreciated. Many hands make light work. This is also a great way as a new member to get to know the other members of the council. Prison Ministry We received a request that the Knights help with this ministry. Brother Knights Bob Young and Dennis Kaney have participated. They tell us it is a very rewarding experience and that you’ll get as much from them as they get from your visits. The ministry is also in need of Catholic Bibles (English and Spanish) or other religious books. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer to visit the prison or donating bibles, contact Suzanne Visitation 754-2489. CCC CAMPAIGN (Coins for Children at Christmas) DGK Kent has begun a new campaign for needy children. Kent will bring a container to each business meeting. He asks that you get a container at home and put your extra change in it. Bring the change to the meeting and put it into the big container. At Christmas, the proceeds we collect throughout the year will be used to buy presents for those needy children identified by the Church office as well as a party.

Social Meeting programs will be announced at the business meeting. Please check the calendar before going to the HFC for a social meeting.

Health Hint for the Month Keep It Up How have your good intentions been doing? Join the gym/YMCA/etc. after the holidays and haven’t been back for over a week? Started an exercise program but kind of let it slip for awhile? Don’t worry or fret, this is common and human nature. We just naturally avoid those things that are difficult or are not something we want to do - like walking the dog or taking out the garbage. As a former instructor, I learned from my instructor training that it takes doing it on a daily basis, regardless the activity, about a month to get into a routine of doing it on a regular basis. Most quit too soon. Instead of giving up, find an exercise friend so you can motivate each other. You can make one at the gym or amongst your associates. It doesn’t have to be someone you socialize with, just someone that wants to exercise. The local newspaper and AARP newsletter both recommend walking as the best exercise for joints and cardio. If you belong to the YMCA or thinking about it, find if they offer water aerobics. My doctor tells me that this is excellent for those with joint problems since it is low impact. Ask around at the next council meeting; you might be glad to know that there are several members that walk every day at the greenway or park and would welcome a new walker. Remember what Thomas Fuller, philosopher said: All things are difficult before they are easy. Keep it up!!

The council’s calendar is available at our website www.kofc9282.org ; Click here to go to: Knights of Columbus Council 9282

Note from the editor: if you have an item or article you want published in the newsletter, submit it via email NLT than the Friday prior to the monthly business meeting. All items or articles should contain contact information and pertinent date(s) and time(s).

Observations of a Curmudgeon Well, it’s getting to be that time again where every four years we get to hear ad nauseum all sorts of folks stumping, making grandiose promises of how our lives will be better if we just vote the right way. Then, the next four years, these same folks spend time explaining why, because someone or something prevents them, they weren’t able to keep those same promises. As the speeches go on, we get on one band wagon or another depending on who spins the best yarns that meet our expectations. This being said, I’ve learned through my years that only a few things can really polarize an organization - politics being one. We, as brothers in knighthood, need to stay the course. Leave politics outside the meeting chambers. Don’t create or support division amongst the ranks. Leave the campaign buttons off when attending meetings or functions. Every brother has a right to believe in and vote for a particular candidate as he deems fit. If you feel like you must espouse on the virtues on a particular candidate, please do so outside the meeting. You don’t know how the other brother knight feels about a particular candidate and you may lose a friend or member in the process if not careful. Remember – not everyone is an elephant and not everyone is a donkey but we are all brothers. Keep it sacred.

March 31, 2012 Middle Tennessee Charity D.O.G. (Dutch Oven Gathering)

The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the International Dutch Oven Society (IDOS) will be sponsoring a charity D.O.G. at Cedars of Lebanon State Park, in Lebanon, TN. on March 31, 2012 from 12:30 PM till 5:00 PM. We will assemble, cook, eat, and raffle door prizes at Pavilion #1 between the Park office and the Cedars Forrest lodge.

This event will benefit a young girl from Mt. Juliet, TN. battling cancer. Bishop Mikaelian and her family moved here from New Orleans after Katrina devastated their home. Once here they discovered the cancer and she has been fighting ever since. All proceeds will go directly to the family, who will be in attendance for this event.

We will have three (3) judges to determine the best Dutch oven dish prepared during the day. We also ask all who plan to cook to make a batch of their best, homemade cornbread. We will ask the judges to present the top 3 cornbreads with a special award. Each cook is responsible for his/her own supplies for this event; nothing will be furnished except for the pavilion location.

We will make available a big pot of beans to keep you filled up all afternoon, and we will serve the cornbread made by our cooks. Once the Dutch oven cooks have completed their dishes and the judges have tasted from all the pots, we will make samples available for everyone in attendance. We plan to judge the Dutch Oven contest at 2:00 PM that day, and hold “How To” seminars on the art of Dutch Oven cooking throughout the day.

Our raffle items will be on display throughout the event and tickets will be sold all day with the drawings being held near the end of the day. 5 tickets for $5.00 will ensure that we will raise some substantial funds for the family. We will also have a donation jar for any additional donations you wish to make to Bishop Mikaelian.

To register to participate in the Dutch oven cooking event, please email George at: [email protected] or Mike at [email protected] let us know what you plan to make and how many pots you’re going to cook in. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Cedars of Lebanon on March 31, 2012
