    1 ‘A Strange Revolution in the Manners of the Country’: Aboriginal- Settler Intermarriage in Nineteenth- Century British Columbia Jay Nelson For a fleeting window of time in the early nineteenth century, Aboriginal- settler intermarriage was a vibrant and respected institution across the Pa- cific Northwest.1 The prevalence of this institution – as well as its animating principles and widespread acceptance – derived primarily from the unique social, economic, and political fabric within which it was intricately en- meshed. From the moment the Northwest Company (NWC) established a land-based fur trade west of the Rockies in the 1810s, Aboriginal coopera- tion was essential to the success of the venture and the very survival of its participants. Contrary to conventional histories of the fur trade, which tend to portray Aboriginal populations as passive victims of European mercantil- ism, it is clear that Aboriginal communities actively elicited and often dic- tated the terms of trade with European arrivals. Even before contact, marriage was well established in the geopolitical world of the Pacific Northwest as a means of securing peaceful relations between communities, fostering trade, and entangling strangers in a series of kinship obligations. Aboriginal com- munities naturally extended this institution to European traders, who were well aware of its economic significance (and personal advantages) from the experience of the Hudson’s Bay Company fur trade. Thus, from the ‘mutually beneficial economic symbiosis’2 of the early Pacific coast fur trade, a unique and relatively egalitarian institution of marriage, largely mirroring Aboriginal marriage rites and customs, emerged as the primary economic and social foundation of Aboriginal-settler inter- action.

In this realm, a couple has the potential to ascend toward closer resem- blance to God in heart and love than ever before and to extend that love to the world around them. No relationship prior to marriage has the same potential for human oneness, and thus no other relationship entails the same demands for surrender of the self. In this way, marriage promotes true love, which is to live for the sake of others. As marital expert Judith Wallerstein said, “A marriage that commands loyalty . requires each partner to relinquish self-centeredness.”2 Catholic psychologist Marshall Fightlin asserts that it is the daily task of a husband to “mortify” the impulses to act like a single man and to concern himself with his other—his wife.

Abstract This thesis presents a cultural history of families and family roles in the post-Imperial west, here defined as AD 400-700. This thesis questions the ‘tri-partite’ influences of Roman heritage, ‘Germanic’ culture and Christianisation in the post-Imperial west, and identifies the prime driver of change in the construction of families as the development and implementation of Christian thought. This thesis is in two parts. The first considers families in the legal context of the post-Imperial law codes, and provides a systematic overview of the laws using the Theodosian and Justinian codes as a point of comparison. This section concludes that the post-Imperial codes are Roman in nature and that much of the legislation which concerns the family is very similar to the late Roman law of the Theodosian Code.

    “Friend of My Heart”: Courtship and Marriage in Early America Charles Willson Peale’s “William Smith and Grandson” After the American Revolution, the newly established United States offered exciting possibilities for individual freedom and political participation. Of course, this promise extended only to native-born or naturalized white males who owned land—men such as William Smith. Smith was a prominent Baltimore merchant and candidate for the first U.S. Congress when he sat for this portrait. Pictured at his country estate alongside his grandson, Smith is cast as a worthy contender for public office: a man who has cultivated his mind and his family as well as his property. With so much power vested in “the people,” skeptics wondered whether Britain’s former subjects, now citizens of a republic, were prepared to perform their new duties, namely the task of electing their own government officials. Did they even recognize Smith’s qualifications? For the United States to endure, the citizenry had to put the common good above their own narrow interests. Where would Americans learn the virtues necessary to preserve this new and seemingly fragile form of government? The answer, for many, was at home. In 18th-century thought, the institution of marriage was a microcosm of society. The long-held model of all-powerful husband and submissive wife came to be seen—much like the monarch’s oppressive rule over his subjects—as an obstacle to personal happiness. More appropriate for a young republic, the thinking went, was the relatively novel idea of “companionate marriage.” In a loving partnership governed by affection rather than fear, men would learn to balance their own desires with those of their mate.

With the growing economy, increased educational levels, the gradual rise in ‘love match marriages’ and knowing that marriage is usually a onetime opportunity, young Indian couples are willing to adopt and reject certain elements of the traditional Vedic wedding rituals to fit into the larger scheme of their life’s meaning and establish their own style. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 married Indian Hindu women currently living in the United States to identify and examine the social factors that influenced the choices that these women made regarding the various Vedic wedding rituals.
