Thank you for your always thoughtful and provocative comments and insights. I took copious notes of our meetings together, and I was continually struck by how many levels of insight your comments always had, as I studied them intently for guidance. Thank you for the thoroughness and care you took in supporting my research process in its many manifestations; from the messy and confusing details of the data, to the thickets of analytical frameworks and analyses I was weaving together in this project. Your teaching embodies feminist pedagogy at its best, and I thank you so much for making it a plain matter of fact that I could -- and indeed, should, trust my insights and value what I have to say. Thank you Joya Misra. Your support of graduate students is an inspiring model for us all. I have benefited so much from your generosity to the entire graduate student body in the mentoring environments you created over the years, facilitating writing groups, prospectus groups, dissertation support groups, and job market classes. You listen closely and respectfully to our needs, and you respond in real time, with an eye to equity and inclusion of all students, always seeking out the latest information so that we can engage with the real world and have the tools we need to succeed. Thank you too for always being there for me personally and professionally, and for understanding the ways that the personal and the professional are intertwined, in both challenging and fruitful ways. Thank you especially for your confidence in me, and the many compliments you gave me v over the years asserting my value and my participation as an academic member of the student body. I hope you know how much you enabled me to keep my eyes on the prize and assert my place in academia despite some major life challenges. Thank you Leslie King for your honest and inspiring reflections on my work, and for seeing the value of my work to environmental sociology and environmental social change. Thank you for always giving me so much time and reflecting back what you thought was most interesting and inspiring in the many ethnographic examples that I struggled to bring together in a coherent way. Your feedback (I loved our meetings at the Roost!) was essential in helping me situate the data in an environmental and political context. Fundamental questions that you asked, such as: “tell me why this matters” and “tell me what’s the most important take-away?” helped me assert specificity in the context of unwieldy data, and a personal tendency to cast a wide net without settling clearly on linear points. I thank the individuals and organizations in my study who trusted me to represent their ideas and their words, and who engaged me in my research questions and ideas in our conversations in the field. I take all responsibility for any misrepresentations or misstatements that I have made in this study. I hope this piece can be of some use to the important work that is happening in the Pioneer Valley and beyond. And I hope we can have some more fruitful conversations and interactions in the future. vi Special thanks to my mentor Holly Carter at Lesley University who first insisted that I pursue a PhD; and to Dee Royster, my first advisor at the University of Massachusetts, for believing in me in my early years as a grad student – I hope our paths cross again soon. Thank you to Jonathon Wynn for extending a hand when my data chapters were in their messiest forms; for meeting with me at length at the Roost and in my office, and lending me different books that I could use as a reference for writing up ethnographic data. Our paths crossed at both Smith College and at the University of Massachusetts, and I hope we can continue to work together in different contexts. vii Thank you bacon gang -- Elisa Martinez and Kathleen Hulton -- for inspiring sessions at Esselon that came with sometimes tea, sometimes coffee, and always bacon. It was extra special to connect and support each other in our graduate experience as students who were also moms. Our conversations about our parenting and family experiences were just as motivating for me as the many dissertation chapter drafts you both read in the final year and a half of my graduate journey. Elisa, your kindness, your commitment to social justice, and your profound grasp of theory really helped me through. Kathleen, thank you for questioning the boxes I find myself in, and for urging me on more than one occasion to see the ways in which I might be falling into normative traps, and to be judicious about where and when I make moral claims. Thank you too for really detailed comments on many of my final drafts – those comments really pulled me across the finish line. Thank you to the Department of Sociology for supporting me for many years and providing an environment in which I really developed as a sociologist and came into my own as an academic. I could not have finished without such strong departmental support. So many staff and faculty supported me and taught me over the years. I am a zealous convert to Schrivener -- I can not imagine having been able to write this dissertation without that platform.
