HUNTER COLLEGE GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT HONORS ATSS/UFT

On Friday evening, April 29th, Ines M. Miyares, Professor and Chair of the Geography Department at Hunter College, CUNY presented the department’s annual award for Outstanding Contributions to Geographic Education in the Schools of to ATSS/UFT President/Chairperson Rozella Kirchgaessner, citing her support for workshops at the Greater Metropolitan NY Social Studies Conference, co-sponsoring the summer New York Geographic Alliance institutes, and for her advocacy for the inclusion of geographic concepts and strategies at state and national forums. This was also the induction ceremony for new members of Gamma theta Upsilon, the professional geography fraternity honoring geography scholars. Rozella noted in accepting the award that she had also been inducted into Gamma Theta Upsilon during her senior year at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in1967. She encouraged the new inductees to consider the opportunities teaching presented to “change the world one mind at a time.” ATSS/UFT is quite proud of the working relationship we have with both New York Geographic Alliance Coordinators, Carol and Phil Gersmehl, who are based at Hunter and we thanked Hunter once again for sponsoring them.

CSPSS UPDATE

The Center for the Study and Practice of Social Studies has been working across the year to define entry points for new curricular initiatives. The Neighborhood’s Project is slated to be launched in the fall with a cohort of 10 high schools organized geographically according to their local Community Boards. In addition, the Center helped organize the New York City premier of Karem Abdul-Jabbar’s On the Shoulders of Giants, and is in negotiation with the Skyhook Foundation to make the curriculum support materials available to NYC Schools and to sponsor ways to bring Abdul-Jabbar’s other books to classroom audiences.

Social Studies Conference, the main annual event of ATSS/UFT, was held on Saturday, February 5th, at UFT Brooklyn Headquarters, 335 Adams

Street.) The theme of the conference was “Honoring the Past, Balancing the Future.” We nicely weathered the forecast of snow. About 200 Social

Studies professionals attended, including a large number of newer teachers. Social Studies professionals from all levels K-12 and college, teachers as well as supervisors attended, with an increasing representation from elementary schools. There were 34 tables of exhibitors whose booths were swamped by enthusiastic participants searching for materials for their classrooms. Carolyn Herbst was exhibits chair. The program included a very worthwhile group of workshops and interesting afternoon panels. Students from Aviation High School, led by their teacher, Louis Vasquez, were on hand as helpers. The Bernard A. Cohen Social Studies Awards (formerly the John Bunzel Awards) were presented at the Bernard A. Cohen Memorial Breakfast. Mark Wilner was The Cohen Award Chair.

Len Romano, President of the New York State Council for the Social Studies (NYSCSS), as well as Gloria Sesso, President of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies (LICSS). Middle States Council for the Social Studies (MSCSS) did not attend, but she was represented by Carolyn Herbst for greetings from MSCSS at the luncheon podium.

Majora Carter received the ATSS/UFT Rosa Parks Award at Breakfast. A panel on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911, and the World Trade Center Attack in 2001was moderated by Patricia Urevith. ATSS/UFT AND AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR YAD VASHEM PROGRAM

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27. 2011

On Sunday, February 27, 2011, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, ATSS/UFT co- sponsored a program on TEACHING THE HOLOCAUST with the American Society for Yad Vashem. This series of workshops centered on Resistors and Survivors and the use of resources to teach the lessons of the Holocaust. Materials were provided in the workshops and at the conclusion of the program. ATSS/UFT Past President/Chairperson Carolyn Herbst greeted the participants on behalf of ATSS/UFT. She introduced ATSS/UFT President / Chairperson Rozella Kirchgaessner, who was in the audience. ATSS/UFT Executive Board Member Mark Willner, a noted Holocaust expert, also attended later in the program.

Carolyn spoke on the theme of “If we do not have time to teach Social Studies, then we will not have time to teach the stories of the Holocaust.” She referred to the cutting of Social Studies testing in grades 5 and 8, and the th th threatened cut of the 9 and 10 grade New York State Social Studies Regents Exams. She said that if the subject is not tested, then it is not taught. If schools are evaluated on the results of the national common core standards in only English Language Arts and Mathematics, then Social Studies education and Holocaust education will suffer. She noted that the American Society of Yad Vashem is a particular specialist in using the stories of individuals in the Holocaust, as well as portraying the Jewish culture of Europe before and after the Holocaust, to teach about the Holocaust, in a safe, classroom-friendly, and understandable manner. The workshops and materials reflected this approach.

A kosher breakfast and lunch were served. The program took place at th the Pratt Mansions, 1027 5 Av. bet 83 & 84 Sts. The program was free. For more information about the American Society for Yad Vashem call: 212 220 4304.

REPORT ON THE ATSS/UFT PROGRAM HONORING KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR IN NEW YORK CITY

On Wednesday, February 9, 2011 ATSS/UFT co-hosted the New York City premier of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s film “On the Shoulders of Giants” with the Schomburg Center for the Study of Black History and the Skyhook Foundation. ATSS/UFT President/ Chairperson Rozella Kirchgaessner, presided over the event, where she and ATSS/UFT Vice-President/Vice-Chairperson, Ollie Fields Thacker, who also co-authored the related curriculum materials, presented the ATSS/UFT 2009 Rosa Parks Award to Mr. Abdul-Jabbar.

“On the Shoulders of Giants” is a documentary based on Abdul-Jabbar’s book by the same title, which traces the story of the “Harlem Rens”, an all-star African-American basketball team that played home games at the Renaissance Ballroom in Harlem, and faced discrimination in a country was still segregated through the 1940’s and 1950’s as it traveled across the country to play any other basketball team willing to challenge their skill. The “best basketball team you never heard of,” was phenomenally successful, even defeating the top billed white team prior to the creation of the NBA.

ATSS/UFT Executive Board member Cynthia Copeland moderated the panel discussion that included NBA Commissioner David Stern, Spike Lee, retiring Schomburg Center Director, Dr. Howard Dodson and Mr. Abdul-Jabbar. There was a live audience of about 200 students and their teachers from about a dozen different New York City Public Secondary Schools, and several members of the ATSS/UFT Executive Board including Carolyn Herbst. The Boys and Girls High School jazz ensemble welcomed visitors in the lobby while the Talent Unlimited Jazz Band performed on stage. The program was streamed live through a special video link provided by Skyhook Foundation to every school across New York City and New York State. Alan Schulman arranged the student and school participation portions of the program.

After the formal Program Mr. Abdul-Jabbar posed for photographs with students and teachers from each school and members of the ATSS/UFT Executive Board including Rozella Kirchgaessner, Ollie Fields Thacker, Cynthia Copeland, Carolyn Herbst, Alice Skinner-Williams, Ashley Asharya and George Altomare UFT Committee Liaison.

There was full press coverage with articles appearing in the , , the and the New York Teacher.

ATSS/UFT and NYSCSS presented several joint resolutions in the NCSS House of Delegates (HOD) that reflected our urban sensibilities on national issues, such as the State Social Studies Standards, and Teaching about Anti-Semitism today.

th This was the 90 Anniversary of NCSS, and to honor the anniversary, Dr. Brenda Parnes and the Archive Committee created standing signs representing each decade of NCSS at the convention center.

Nick Norman and Victoria Braxton were two ATSS/UFT “first- timers” at the convention.

A high point for the ATSS/UFT team at the House of Delegates meetings was when Ollie Fields Thacker, Vice-President/Vice-Chairperson of ATSS/UFT, received a Gold Star Certificate, which recognized ATSS/UFT for its superior programs and services, as well as being the largest local council affiliated with NCSS. Another high point was when Ollie Fields Thacker was acknowledged as a writer of the NCSS curriculum that supports the book and documentary film created by basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, On the Shoulders of Giants about the Harlem Renaissance star basketball team the “Harlem Rens”.
