There are some folks who call it Summer, but we know better. Between now and October, the goal is to sail as much as possible: on your own, or with friends; close to home, or off on an adventure. Whatever your plans for the Sailing Season, please include joining us at the Homecoming Regatta in Rockland. As you make your way to Rockland, you can join the Southwest Harbor Rendezvous and the Pulpit Harbor Rendezvous while you travel Downeast. Your August port of call could be the Classic Boat Regatta in Marblehead. Think of the opportunities to join other Friendships up and down the New England coast during this Sailing Season! For some of us, joining the fleet in Rockland is achieved by car. We look forward to seeing everyone who does travel overland to help us celebrate the annual Homecoming. There will be ample opportunities to crew on the boats in the fleet, and plenty of chances to visit with each other, catch up on the latest boat news and see the local attractions. As always, the Society thanks the city of Rockland for being a gracious host, and especially thanks to the Harbor Master and his crew for taking excellent care of us and our boats each and every year. It truly is a pleasure to “come home” to Rockland in July. Another very special “thank you” goes to Rich & Beth Langton, our intrepid Yearbook Editors. Recently, however, her age began to show, with a slight sag here, a bit of a wrinkle there and an occasional tuck wherever necessary. However, the time had come when it was required of her to undergo some major surgery - - - just as almost all aging folks occasionally have to do. Without getting too personal regarding this gal’s recent surgery, we are happy to report that she is once again fit as a fiddle! Bright, upstart, much as she always had been - and, like all good gals - - - ready for action!!! It is with these thoughts in mind that we therefore dedicate our 2012 yearbook to an old honey and a dear friend - - - TANNIS!!! Continued p. If you hadn’t known, TANNIS was in danger of sinking while racing at Rockland some two years ago when she had the indignity of springing a plank! This brought her skipper and crew to the point of taking a hard look at her innards. What came out of that “look-see” was a decision to put her in the shop for an extended period to replace all that time had taken during her many years of hard work. 2010 2011 2012 2012 When you see TANNIS at Rockland this July, she will be virtually a brand new Friendship sloop; retaining same lines, with her delightful curves fully revitalized - - - and raring to go!!!     Welcome Welcome to the eighth annual Friendship Sloop Days. During the spring of 1961, plans were hastily made for a race that was to be a homecoming for Friendship Sloops. Little did we realize that we were grabbing a bear by the tail. With our eighth regatta coming up shortly, we know what enthusiasm and love there is for these boats. Our first year was a one1 day, one race affair, but so many sloops travelled so many miles to join in tht. fun, it was decided in order to make it worthwhile for them to travel so far, three days should be set aside for racing. This has worked out well, and everyone seems happy with the arrangement. Thanks to a competent Race Committee, the race itself has been one of our lesser problems. Accommodating the crowds of people who want to see these boats from shore or watch them race from other boats has been quite an undertaking for a small fishing village of 800 people. Such problems as feed- ing up to 5,000 people, and parking their cars seemed insurmountable, but thanks to the veracity of "many handsJmake light work," the impossible was easily accomplished. Outdoor meals were served, banquets prepared, park- ing lots set up, a taxi service arranged,; and innumerable other facilities pro- Dedication — vided to help make things run smoothly; The aspect of all this that strikes most people first, is the fact that no individuals profit from any of this. I removed the barnacles with a black Scotch pad (the type used on grills), but rings from the barnacles remain. I am hesitant to use products intended for removing barnacle rings from fiberglass hulls on a fabric inflatable. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions with respect to removing such rings from an inflatable? More important, I've used it and it works great. Hypalon and PVC are both impervious to HCL; my only reservation had been to keep it away from the seams (which isn't that difficult) as I am not sure how it would affect the glue. Deflate the dinghy and roll the PVC or Hapalon with your fingers as to fracture and dislodge the rings. Sometimes a plastic scraper used for snow removal can assist. I also grew a healthy crop. After this tedious effort of Cirripedia removal a priorety was established. Get the dink out of the water!     DEDICATION is dedicated to the town of Friendship. His dedication to the town is what brought about the sloop races. Other men had the idea but it was Herald who brought it to fruition. None of the existing organizations or committees in the town wanted to tackle such a tremendous undertaking, so almost single-handedly, Herald set up a new organization to promote this tremendous idea. Thus the Friendship Sloop Society was born. The first year was difficult. It was not easy to solicit help because people thought it couldn't be done.
