MOZAMBIQUE Price Bulletin April 2020 MOZAMBIQUE Price Bulletin April 2020 The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year. Maize, maize meal and rice are the most important food commodities for poor. Maize is the staple food for the poor, with maize meal most often used as a substitute. Rice is also used as alternate staple as it compete with maize meal and is important for all wealth groups particularly for the middle and better off. Each of the markets represented here act as indicators for the broader region. Tete is representative for the province by the same name, Nampula and Pemba are the main markets in the north and are representative for the region, with Nampula having linkages with the interior of Zambezia and Nampula provinces and coastal Nampula. Mocuba is a major market in Zambezia Province and sorrounding areas with strong linkages with Milange bordering Malawi and Quelimane city. Beira has linkages with Gorongosa and Chimoio markets while both Gorongosa and Chimoio have strong linkages with southern markets. The Chokwe, Maxixe, and Maputo markets in the south are linked to markiets in the central region.     DELEGATED MANAGEMENT OF URBAN WATER SUPPLY SERVICES IN MOZAMBIQUE SUMMARY OF THE CASE STUDY OF FIPAG & CRA Delegated management of urban water supply services in Mozambique encountered a string of difficulties soon after it was introduced in 1999, but in 2007 a case study revealed that most problems had been overcome and the foundations for sustainability had been established. The government’s strong commitment, the soundness of the institutional reform and the quality of sector leadership can be credited for these positive results.     Mozambique: Flooding Office of the Resident Coordinator, Situation Report No. 5 (As of 13 March 2015) This report is prepared by the Humanitarian Country Team/Office of the Resident Coordinator in Mozambique. It covers the period from 24 February to 13 March 2015. Highlights From 04 to 08 March 2015, the central and north of the country were severely affected by heavy rains due to a tropical depression formed in the Mozambique Channel affecting at least 144,882 people in Nampula and Cabo Delgado; There are about 10,000 houses destroyed partially/completely in Nampula and Cabo Delgado; In Zambézia province, in terms of Agriculture, there are 60,723 households affected and 60,051 ha of crops lost; A cholera outbreak has been confirmed in Tete, Nampula, Zambézia, Sofala and Niassa provinces, with a cumulative of 5.894 cases and 48 deaths since 25 December 2014. Furthermore, the government had opted to downgrade the alert, because life in the flood-affected areas has been gradually returning to normal. Regardless the downgrade of the red alert, all actions to support people affected by the floods in Zambézia would continue and tied vigilance on the climatic conditions as we still in the rainy and cyclone season.

    WO RLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Global Task Force on Cholera Control Last update: 15.12.06 CHOLERA COUNTRY PROFILE: MOZAMBIQUE General Country Information: The Republic of Mozambique is located in south- eastern Africa and borders Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa with an east coast along the Indian Ocean. Its capital and largest city is Maputo. Beira, in Sofala province, is the second largest town. Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony and became independent in 1975. Civil war and economic collapse characterized the first decade of Mozambican independence. It is now a multi-party republic ruled by a president and a prime minister. Mozambique is divided into 10 provinces which are subdivided into 129 districts. The majority of its 18 million people live in rural areas with an urban population of only 29%. Its economy is based on industry products (such as cement, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages) and agriculture products (such as sugar, cashews, oil-bearing seeds and tea). Mozambique is vulnerable to climatic hazards such as floods, droughts and cyclones. Malaria is the first cause of mortality among children and the tuberculosis rate is 138 per 100' 000 (2002), ranking 11th on the high-burden Tuberculosis countries. Cholera Background History: Since 1973, cholera has always been present in Mozambique.     Mozambique Flood Response update (as of 21 March 2019) WFP Mozambique: Satellite detected waters, as of 20 March Overview • On 19 March, the Mozambique Council of Ministers declared a state of National Emergency. • Beira continues to be completely inaccessible by road although port and airport are operating. • EDM dispatched 9 generators from Maputo to Beira through a chartered aircraft. The equipment will provide the alternative electricity supply to the city while technical teams work to restore the normal operation of the city Logistics Cluster: Access Constraints, as of 21 March system. • Commercial life is getting back to normal in Beira with shops opening and street vendors selling goods. • People continue to be isolated by flood waters and road damage in Manica, and accommodation centres have been set up in Chimoio, Gondola, Macate and Sussundenga.
