The sporadic character of these encounters make the impact on Amerindian contacts on societies irregular and uneven. My analysis is directed to the present condition as encountered, especially the the Amazon variety of contacts. This approach obliges the text be treated as a whole, rather than being read selectively. Maintaining the integrity of the text allows us to see 1500-1562 the different kinds of relations in their contexts. My intention is to use these reports to search for the brid- ges across cultural separations. Each drew the other Mark Harris[1] towards them, in their own ways. These steps opened the way for the “refounding” of indigenous riverine so- cieties in the seventeenth century. Keywords: Amazon; encounter; Indians. I argue that in Cristobal de Acuña’s narrative, Nuevo descubrimiento del Gran rio de las Amazonas (1641), the narrating subject tries to persuade the Spanish Crown to acknowledge the great economic potential that the natural resources from the Amazon region have to offer, how they would add to the wealth of the Spanish Empire and implicitly begin the Spanish efforts to colonize and evangelize the Amazon region. I claim that Acuña is “ahead of his time” and thinks like an innovative entrepreneurial capitalist proposing a new economic model for generating sustainable wealth: extraction and manufacture of the natural resources found in the Amazon region under a “state-guided” capitalistic system. Acuña does not just describe the unique, exotic landscapes he encounters in his voyage down the Amazon River, but rather these landscape descriptions serve the purpose of emphasizing the economic value of nature in the region. -

La más importante de ellas fue la enviada al monarca Felipe II. En ella, Aguirre adoptó un peculiar tono burlón y profético, y mezcló ideas jurídicas y teológicas relacionadas con la posesión de América. A diferencia de la imagen de Aguirre como personaje irracional divulgada en la documentación y la historiografía de la época, este trabajo descubre la lógica subyacente en su carta al monarca destinada a defender la posición política de Aguirre. Palabras clave: Historia Perú, rebeliones en América colonial, Lope de Aguirre, conquistadores. Abstract During the summer of 1561 in Venezuela, the rebel Lope de Aguirre wrote several letters addressed to his political enemies on both sides of the Atlantic. The most important of these documents was the letter sent to Philip II, king of Spain. In this letter, Aguirre incorporated legal terminology while simultaneously adopting a burlesque and prophetic tone to effectively address the Spanish possession of America. Contrary to the predominant image of Aguirre as an irrational being in the documents and the historiography of that period, this paper shows the rhetorical logic of Aguirre´s famous letter. Therefore, the letter is best understood as an attempt to justify a political position. -

The writing of the letter itself is a document of resistance through Andean as well as Amazonian territories: against institutional power, religious values, justice, and corruption. In doing so, the letter shares the main characteristics present in the works of art produced by Glauber Rocha during Cinema Novo. This means that the aesthetics of hunger should be understood as an atemporal response to historical and structural violence, instead of an aesthetical phenomenon limited to the context of Cinema Novo in Brazil. In more practical terms, this investigation identifies the mechanisms of the aesthetics of hunger in Lope de Aguirre’s Letter to the King. It demonstrates that such aesthetics is a collective recurrent phenomenon in Latin America’s history since its colonization. The aesthetics of hunger, thus, contests not only the work of art in the 20th century through Cinema Novo, or the tradition of foundational documents (travel chronicles) in the late 1400s and early 1500s, but most importantly, it allows literary criticism to approach the matter of hunger as a counterpoint to – not a form of subjugation by – (post)colonial practices. -

Buena parte de la literatura histórica respectiva ha caracterizado al personaje como un traidor o un loco, empero, el presente estudio pro- pone un análisis del caudillo y de su alzamiento desde el horizonte histórico de la cultura política de su época, en términos de pacto y vasallaje. PALABRAS CLAVE: Lope de Aguirre, Rebeliones del Perú, Cultura política. ABSTRACT: In 1561 Lope de Aguirre led the last major rebellion against the Spanish Crown in the Viceroyalty of Peru. A good part of the historical works on the subject have des- cribed Aguirre as a lunatic or a traitor; however, this paper proposes to study Aguirre and his revolt under the light of the political culture of his time, and in terms of the pact of vassalage. A ESCRITA DAS RELACIONES DA JORNADA DE LOPE DE AGUIRRE (1560-1561) DEISE CRISTINA SCHELL* Introdução Quando tratamos de analisar os escritos coloniais, através dos quais, como veremos, os conquistadores intentavam imprimir a “veracidade” do vivido acerca do descobrimento e da Conquista, o cuidado metodológico deve ser redobrado. Os “elementos incontrolados” de que lembra Ginzburg, emergem aí sob a forma de imaginação, escolha, silêncio, esquecimento, emoção, intenção, experiência, interesse, entre tantos outros. Por essa razão, ao se deparar com as fontes textuais do século XVI, o historiador, viajante do passado, deve ter o olhar astuto, que pensa, “instiga e provoca a cada instante sua empresa de inspecção e interrogação” (CARDOSO, 1988, p. 349). É exatamente de escritos do XVI que se ocupa a “empresa de interrogação” de que tomamos parte neste momento; mais especialmente, daquelas que são as primeiras narrativas sobre a Jornada de Omagua y Dorado, produzidas por participantes desta expedição de conquista que tomou o rumo do rio Amazonas entre os anos de 1560 e 1561. Nesta Jornada, os expedicionários – homens experientes em campanhas espanholas de conquista que exploravam o espaço americano – se empenharam em procurar, no interior da Floresta Amazônia, as tão ambicionadas riquezas que, pensavam, estariam escondidas nos reinos míticos de Omagua e El Dorado. Ocorreu que, no meio do percurso, um grupo se rebelou contra o comando da expedição e a Coroa Espanhola, ocasionando o confronto, a discórdia e a violência entre toda a hoste. Até o final da viagem, muitos personagens da Jornada foram assassinados no meio da mata e um deles, sozinho, foi responsabilizado pelo episódio da insurgência e pelas mortes de seus companheiros: Lope de Aguirre. -

David Wilkinson [email protected] ABSTRACT Was there a pre-Columbian civilization, properly so called, in the Amazon River basin of South America? Civilizations imply cities. The earliest Spanish expedition reported the existence of Amazonian cities; later, however, no such cities were found. Mid-twentieth- century archaeologists considered that cities could not have been sustained in the Amazon basin. But toward the turn of the century, opinions began to shift. As of 2015, it appears that civilizationists have one more case to contemplate and compare. Amazon Civilization Before the arrival of Iberian explorers, conquerors and colonists, was there in the Amazon River basin of South America a civilization, properly so called, and separate from, not merely an outcropping of the Andean civilization? Opposing viewpoints, based on documentary and physical evidence and probabilistic reasoning have been vigorously asserted. The period in question is the pre-Columbian (or for Brazilians pre-Cabralian) era before and up to 16th and 17th century contact with Amazonia by Spanish and Portuguese explorers, missionaries, conquistadors, colonists, and bandeirantes (gold-seekers and slave-raiders). -

Este miembro de la famosa expedición de Pedro de Ursúa en busca de El Dorado (1559-1561), que en su camino fue forjando una sangrienta rebelión que culminaría con una carta de desnaturalización dirigida a Felipe II, ha desatado la imaginación de todos aquellos que ven en su acto subversivo un incidente histórico singular.1 Es interesante observar que Lope de Aguirre siempre ha sido representado de manera dicotómica. En efecto, la mayoría de los críticos concuerdan en que si bien las crónicas del siglo XVI lo califi can como tiránico, loco y demoníaco, en el siglo XIX la perspectiva sobre este personaje histórico cambia radicalmente: en el sector liberal de la ciudad letrada se lo empieza a reivindicar como un héroe al interpretar su transgresión como un acto temprano de proclamación de la liberación de América Latina.2 El objetivo de mi ensayo consiste precisamente en participar del debate en torno al gesto independentista de Aguirre, analizando una apropiación sumamente alternativa y muy poco conocida de esta fi gura en la obra de teatro El tirano Aguirre (1872) del médico y catedrático venezolano Adolfo Briceño Picón (1846-1929).3 Distanciándome de la afi rmación de José de la Cruz Rojas Uzcátegui, según la cual el Aguirre de Briceño Picón “se ajusta estrictamente a la historia del personaje” (viii), y enfocándome en la apropiación continua de Lope de Aguirre como un “signifi cante fl otante” (tal como lo entiende 1 La larga lista de obras que recuperan a Lope de Aguirre se encuentra en los trabajos de Ingrid Galster, Bart L. -

Hernández The years leading up to the 1992 Quincentennial of Christopher Columbus' first voyage saw an increase in Latin American plays representing the discovery, exploration and conquest of the Americas. Numerous plays staged this encounter with a focus on such Spanish figures as Columbus, Hernán Cortés and Gonzalo Guerrero as well as Amerindian figures such as La Malinche, Cuauhtemoc and Moctezuma.1 The dominant tendency in these plays, argues Juan Villegas, was not to re-read history from the vantage point of the vanquished, but rather to underscore the injustices of the dominant regimes and their interpretation of history (240). In the case of recent Mexican theatre Sabina Berman's Águila o sol (1984), Vicente Leñero's La noche de Hernán Cortés (1992) and Hugo Rascón Banda's La Malinche (2000) follow the dominant tendency outlined by Villegas and employ a variety of dramatic techniques associated with postmodernism (parody, openness, discontinuity, marginality and anachronism) to deform, decenter and demythify received historical "truths" about the conquest of Mexico, which have underscored the Eurocentric vision of this event.2 While the above mentioned plays focus on figures and episodes related to the conquest of Mexico (i.e., the fall of Tenochtitlán), Víctor Castillo Bautista's Ñuño de Guzmán o la espada de Dios: una obra en un acto (1994) centers on the Spanish conquistador Ñuño de Guzmán and the conquest of Michoacán.3 Ñuño de Guzmán arrived in New Spain in 1527 to assume the post of resident governor of Panuco (modern-day state of Tamaulipas), which he held until 1528.
