Abstract The Anglo-Saxon period spanned over 600 years, beginning in the fifth century with migrations into the Roman province of Britannia by peoples’ from the Continent, witnessing the arrival of Scandinavian raiders and settlers from the ninth century and ending with the Norman Conquest of a unified England in 1066. This was a period of immense cultural, political, economic and religious change. The archaeological evidence for this period is however sparse in comparison with the preceding Roman period and the following medieval period. This is particularly apparent in regions of western England, and our understanding of Shropshire, a county with a notable lack of Anglo-Saxon archaeological or historical evidence, remains obscure. This research aims to enhance our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon period in Shropshire by combining multiple sources of evidence, including the growing body of artefacts recorded by the Portable Antiquity Scheme, to produce an over-view of Shropshire during the Anglo-Saxon period.

Recommendations The Committee is recommended to approve the making of a 30mph Speed Limit Order in Knockin Heath and Dovaston. Report The Proposal 1. Shropshire Council’s Village Speed Limits Policy was approved for implementation in October 2007 following widespread consultation with stakeholders and has been based on guidance contained within Department for Transport Circular 01/2006 – Setting Local Speed Limits. 2. The Policy provides a proactive approach by reviewing all of the villages in Shropshire, providing a priority ranking and offering a suitable speed limit to these communities that are achievable in terms of legal enforceability and budgetary constraints. A copy of the Village Speed Limit Policy is attached – see Appendix 4. 3. After identifying and prioritising countywide villages not currently subject to a 30mph speed limit, a 3 year programme for delivery was proposed for the 113 villages listed, with 55 proposed to be investigated and where appropriate implemented during 2009/10. 4. Land area and use Kinnerley Parish has an area of 2,389 hectares (23.9 square kilometres, 5,903 acres or 9.2 square miles).
