Two cases this month, though, have begun a reckoning Justin McCurry Fri 22 Mar 2019 07.34 EDT Big Bang member Seungri, centre, who has been accused of running an illegal prostitution ring out of Seoul nightclubs. Photograph: Kim Hong-Ji/Reuters or many South Koreans, the admission by a young man that he secretly filmed himself having sex with women and shared the footage with other men was yet more evidence of a culture of misogyny and sexual abuse that has put the country at the F epicentre of Asia’s #MeToo movement. The sordid details of the man’s alleged misconduct sounded familiar in a society struggling to cope with a voyeurism epidemic – especially in a week when two men were arrested for allegedly filming 1,600 guests across 30 South Korean hotels with spycams – but with one crucial difference. The latest allegations of sexual misconduct involve some of the best-known https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/mar/22/metoo-k-pop-music-industry-sexaul-assault-scandals-korean-cultural-life Page 1 oF 7 Spycams, sex abuse and scandal: #MeToo reaches Korean pop | Music | The Guardian 7/18/19, 12)26 PM figures in K-pop, South Korea’s most successful cultural export. In the space of a week, allegations surrounding the singer-songwriter Jung Joon-young and Seungri, a member of the internationally popular boyband Big Bang, have snowballed into overlapping sex and corruption scandals that have exposed K-pop’s dark underbelly and prompted a backlash among all but the most obsessive fans. Jung said he would retire from showbusiness and admitted that he had shared with members of a chatroom footage of him having sex with several women without their knowledge. Members of the chatroom allegedly included Seungri, who is alleged to have run an illegal prostitution ring out of nightclubs in Seoul’s trendy Gangnam district. The 29-year-old singer has denied the allegations. Allegations of sexual misconduct have shattered the wall of silence that protected K- pop – the vanguard of the Hallyu wave of Korean pop culture whose global brand recognition ranks alongside that of Samsung smartphones and Hyundai cars. Reports of sexual and other forms of abuse have plagued other areas of the South Korean entertainment industry for years. Jung Joon-young. Photograph: Kim It is a decade since the soap star Jang Ja-yeon Hong-Ji/Reuters killed herself at her home near Seoul, leaving a seven-page letter in which she claimed she had been the victim of sexual abuse and exploitation. Jang wrote that she had been forced to have sex with 31 influential men, including politicians, business and newspaper executives and entertainment industry figures. Some of the suspects were investigated and acquitted. Since then, South Korea’s #MeToo movement, inspired by fury over the widespread use of spycams for molka, the secret filming of women in public places, has been credited with exposing sexual abuse and misconduct in the film industry, politics and the church. In 2017, the acclaimed film director Kim Ki-duk was accused of sexually and physically abusing an actress. Prosecutors dropped the sex abuse charge, citing lack of evidence, but fined Kim for physical assault. Earlier this month, Kim filed a damages suit, demanding 300 million won ($265,000) from a South Korean women’s rights group that had campaigned on the actress’s behalf. In February, Ahn Hee-jung, a former provincial governor who was considered a presidential hopeful, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for sexually assaulting a female aide. And in January, South Korea’s human rights commission announced the country’s biggest https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/mar/22/metoo-k-pop-music-industry-sexaul-assault-scandals-korean-cultural-life Page 2 oF 7 Spycams, sex abuse and scandal: #MeToo reaches Korean pop | Music | The Guardian 7/18/19, 12)26 PM ever investigation into sexual abuse in sport, after a wave of female athletes came forward to allege they had been raped or assaulted by their coaches. “The new atmosphere created by #MeToo helped expose the K-pop scandals,” said Lee Taek- gwang, a cultural commentator. “The tables have been turned and now the K-pop industry has been forced to confront reality. It has to create a new morality.” While other sectors of the entertainment industry finally reckoned with the damage caused by tolerance of sexual misconduct, K-pop appeared immune, despite revelations of mistreatment ranging from labour law violations to psychological and physical abuse. Typically, promising stars are put through a gruelling training schedule as they pass along the conveyor-belt production of new girl and boybands to replace their quickly superannuated colleagues. Like their J-pop counterparts in Japan, young stars are subjected to strict controls over their private lives, including bans on dating, restrictions on mobile phone use and an expectation that they will sacrifice their health to achieve the desired – and in the case of female singers, highly sexualised – image. The sheer scale and immorality involved is driving most of the negative reaction in South Korea, but deep in the background is the fact that we’re talking about a national shame on the international stage. It’s a black eye to Korea, because K-pop is such a metonym for Korea.” Over the the past decade, K-pop has helped South Korea project its soft power, even when perceptions of the country were dominated by its proximity to nuclear-armed North Korea. The boyband BTS alone are worth more than $3.5bn annually to the South Korean economy, the Hyundai Research Institute said in a recent report, adding that the band were the reason why one in every 13 foreign tourists visited South Korea in 2017. This week, the South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, vowed to clean up the entertainment industry after more than 200,000 people signed a petition on the presidential office’s website demanding a thorough investigation into alleged crimes. Along with sexual misconduct and prostitution, these include corruption involving a senior police official who allegedly turned a blind eye to alleged crimes committed at a club where Seungri was an executive director. “The current leadership of the prosecution service and police should stake the fate of their organisations on uncovering the truth and becoming a law enforcement agency that can reveal its own shameful acts in order to regain the public’s trust,” said Moon, a liberal who was elected in 2017 after abuse of power allegations toppled his predecessor, Park Geun-hye. “Without investigating the facts of the incident involving the elite class of society, we cannot say we have a fair society,” added Moon, who ordered officials to reopen the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jang Ja-yeon’s 2009 suicide. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/mar/22/metoo-k-pop-music-industry-sexaul-assault-scandals-korean-cultural-life Page 4 oF 7 Spycams, sex abuse and scandal: #MeToo reaches Korean pop | Music | The Guardian 7/18/19, 12)26 PM The obsessive adherence to K-pop’s established formula for success is producing generations of young performers poorly equipped to navigate the moral minefield of life outside their shared accommodations and recording studios, said Kim Sung-soo, an entertainment industry commentator. “If the agencies do not give sufficient care to their stars, including education and stress management, they will end up raising walking time bombs.” Seungri, left, with his band members in Investors, meanwhile, are losing faith in K-pop’s financial pulling Big Bang. Photograph: Chung Sung- power. Shares in YG Entertainment, which represents Seungri, fell Jun/Getty Images more than 20% after the allegations were first reported at the end of February, while shares in other top management firms have also been hit. Reports that a senior police official allegedly covered up Seungri’s alleged crimes demonstrate that the male-dominated power structure created during South Korea’s spectacular economic development in the 1970s and 80s has survived the global spread of the country’s pop culture, according to Lee. “The Korean wave may be new, but it has failed to rid itself of traditional power relations that allowed men to do whatever they wanted because they were confident they would never be punished,” he said. “They had a sense of psychological entitlement that it was acceptable to break the law.” But he added that the involvement of some of the country’s top celebrities should be the catalyst for reconfiguring how the entertainment industry treats women.

If we have to talk about Hip-Hop music, I have to briefly talk about the roots of American Hip-Hop. When I first started listening to Hip-Hop, it was divided up into East Coast and West Coast in America. Wu Tang Clan and Notorius B.I.G. represented the East Coast (New York) scene and they focused largely on the rap and the lyrics, while representing the West Coast (LA) was 2Pac who focused more on the melody. Umeå Center for Gender Studies Conceptually androgynous The production and commodification of gender in Korean pop music Petter Almqvist-Ingersoll Master Thesis in Gender Studies Spring 2019 Thesis supervisor: Johanna Overud, Ph. D. ABSTRACT Stemming from a recent surge in articles related to Korean masculinities, and based in a feminist and queer Marxist theoretical framework, this paper asks how gender, with a specific focus on what is referred to as soft masculinity, is constructed through K-pop performances, as well as what power structures are in play. By reading studies on pan-Asian masculinities and gender performativity - taking into account such factors as talnori and kkonminam, and investigating conceptual terms flower boy, aegyo, and girl crush - it forms a baseline for a qualitative research project. By conducting qualitative interviews with Swedish K-pop fans and performing semiotic analysis of K-pop music videos, the thesis finds that although K-pop masculinities are perceived as feminine to a foreign audience, they are still heavily rooted in a heteronormative framework. Furthermore, in investigating the production of gender performativity in K-pop, it finds that neoliberal commercialism holds an assertive grip over these productions and are thus able to dictate ‘conceptualizations’ of gender and project identities that are specifically tailored to attract certain audiences. Lastly, the study shows that these practices are sold under an umbrella of ‘loyalty’ in which fans are incentivized to consume in order to show support for their idols – in which the concept of desire plays a significant role. • Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. • Roots and Routes 188
Fendler / Roots and Routes 188 ROOTS AND ROUTES Hip-Hop from South Korea Ute Fendler University of Bayreuth [email protected] Abstract With the growing success of hip-hop in South Korea, the discussions about the authenticity of this genre increase and create cleavages between the mainstream and the underground rappers. The paper intends to analyze three examples of the contemporary music scene that are representative of different positions. Taking Simon Frith’s work on popular music as a means to construct identity, the paper suggests questioning the concept of authenticity (“roots”) and proposes instead conceiving hip-hop in South Korea as a movement at the crossroads (“routes”) of various influences and practices. Keywords Authenticity, Identity, Music videos, Performance, R&B, Rap About the Author Ute Fendler is chair of romance cultural and comparative cultural studies at the University of Bayreuth (Germany). Her research interests include intermedial and intercultural phenomenon, popular culture, migration, iconographies, music video, and performance. Kritika Kultura 29 (2017): –213 © Ateneo de Manila University <http://journals.ateneo.edu/ojs/kk/> Fendler / Roots and Routes 189 In the ongoing process of reaching out to global markets, pop music in South Korea undergoes fast changes, mainly under the influence of US-American and Western European markets, as literature on K-pop highlights (Choi and Maliangkay). John Lie dealt with the question of K-pop as music positioned between different influences: K-pop is symptomatic of the cultural transformation of South Korea: at once the almost complete repudiation of traditional cultures—both Confucian and folk—and the repeated rhetorical stress on the continuities between the past and the present: the nearly empty signifier that is South Korean cultural-national identity.

  • Hallyu at a Crossroads: the Clash of Korea's Soft Power Success and China's Hard Power Threat in Light of Terminal High
Asian International Studies Review Vol. 18 No.1 (June 2017): 153-169 153 Received March 15, 2017 Revised May 10, 2017 Accepted May 20, 2017 Hallyu at a Crossroads: The Clash of Korea’s Soft Power Success and China’s Hard Power Threat in Light of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System Deployment HANNAH JUN* The past two decades have witnessed the remarkable success of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, with Korea welcoming a large influx of foreign visitors and benefiting from massive consumption of products ranging from Korean television and film, K-pop and lifestyle products. A more recent announcement by CJ E&M points to an even more aggressive plan for regional ubiquity, as encapsulated by Hallyu 4.0. Simultaneously, we have already felt some of the effect of policy changes in China – a core Hallyu market – as a response to Korea’s plan to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. In this sense, we see the stirrings of a clash between Korean soft power and Chinese hard power, and are uncertain who will emerge on top. This paper examines the broad success of Hallyu from key theoretical perspectives, while addressing linkages between Korean corporations and cultural power/influence that have led to an announcement such as Hallyu 4.0. This paper also highlights the recent tensions between Korea and China, specifically with respect to THAAD deployment, and outlines potential implications for businesses and policymakers through preliminary scenarios. DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language.
