This article examines the status of Parsons's canonical translation; the puta- tive sources of its imagery (in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress); and the more complex idea that Weber himself sought to evoke with the "shell as hard as steel": a reconstitution of the human subject under bureaucratic capitalism in which "steel" becomes emblematic of modernity. Steel, unlike the "element" iron, is a product of human fabrication. It is both hard and potentially flexible. Further, whereas a cage confines human agents, but leaves their powers otherwise intact, a "shell" suggests that modern capitalism has created a new kind of being. After examining objections to this interpretation, I argue that whatever the problems with Parsons's "iron cage" as a rendition of Weber's own metaphor, it has become a "traveling idea," a fertile coinage in its own right, an intriguing example of how the translator's imagination can impose itself influentially on the text and its readers. ". Look within my Vail, Turn up my metaphors. " (John Bunyan) I. INTRODUCTION Few concepts in the social sciences are more instantly recognizable than the "iron cage." Seemingly integral to the powerful denouement of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, the metaphor sums up, graphically and dra- matically, the predicament of modern human beings trapped in a socioeconomic structure of their own making. Let us recall the context in which this striking image appears: The Puritan wanted to work in a calling; we are forced to do so. For when asceticism was carried out of monastic cells into everyday life, and began to dominate worldly morality, it did its part in building the tremendous cosmos of the modern economic order. This order is now bound to the technical and economic conditions of machine production which today determine the lives of all the individuals who are born into this mechanism, not only those directly concerned with economic acquisition, with irresistible force. In Baxter's view the care for external goods should only lie on the shoulders of the "saint like a light cloak, which can be thrown aside at any moment". But fate decreed that the cloak should become an iron cage.2 This passage, first published in English in 1930, established the "iron cage" as one of the key topoi of the social sciences, versatile enough to animate investiga- tions ranging from scientific management3 to the men's movement,4 or to invite lit- erary pun5 and oxymoron.6 Asked to name its author, most social scientists will immediately reply "Max Weber." Yet the real author of the "iron cage" is not Weber; but one of his first translators, Talcott Parsons. What I propose to show in this article is that the metaphor Weber himself employed-stahlhartes Gehduse, or "shell as hard as steel"-is more complex and more modern than Parsons's alter- native.7 Two preliminary sections furnish the context for this argument. The first reviews some general criticisms of Weber translations in order to show the pecu- liarity of Parsons's "iron cage." The second section examines the inconsistent rea- sons Parsons gave for choosing the expression that has since become canonical, for here, too, there are clues as to why his interpretation of Weber is problematic. II. WEBER AND HIS TRANSLATORS Translators of Weber are frequently taxed for at least four kinds of inadequacy, each of which has interpretive consequences for the reception and understanding of his work. First, and most obviously, they are charged with simple incompe- tence, rendering terms incorrectly, eliding them or omitting them altogether. Thus Guenther Roth8 points out that Gerth and Mills's9 translations of "Science as a Vocation" and "Politics as a Vocation" are defective in at least two respects, both of which have led to "great confusions." 'Science as a Vocation' is nothing but a defense of intellectualism.'"1 Equally, through the omission of an all-important qualifying adjective, Gerth and Mills make Weber's concluding remarks to "Politics as a Vocation" appear much more apocalyptic than in fact they were. In the original German, Weber says that what "at present" or "for the time being" (zundchst) lies ahead "of us" (that is, German citizens) is "a polar night of icy darkness and hardness," an allusion to the Versailles Treaty and to the difficulties the fledgling Weimar Republic will strenuously have to overcome. This is not, then, Spenglerian cultural pessimism, but rather a bracing call for realism, sobri- ety, and stamina to face the specific demands of the day. The omission of the adjective (zundchst) appears to suggest the opposite: an impending catastrophe of civilization itself.11 In a similar vein, Peter Ghosh documents the "continuous stream of individual mistranslations, misprints and omissions of up to clause- length which can destroy the meaning of entire paragraphs" in Parsons's version of The Protestant Ethic. 12 These kinds of errors are largely attributable to simple and ubiquitous human failings: carelessness, negligence, rashness. A second criticism of Weber's trans- lators concerns not simple mistakes, however, but something deeper and more sociologically problematic: an inability to understand, or at least convey, the con- ceptual matrix in which the original terms are located. In her paper on "The Americanization of Max Weber," Gisela Hinkle puts it this way: By "Americanization" we mean an interpretive transformation of Weber's writings through the process of translation.

The Protestant Ethic: On New Translations Max Weber’s Protestant Ethic in the 21st Century Lutz Kaelber† The history of sociology’s most famous study began with the publication of a two-part essay. Its author, educated as a lawyer but formerly employed as a national economist, had no formal training in its subject. He had just overcome a mood disorder that had debilitated him and all but finished his promising academic career, allowing his wife to become better known in some academic and social circles than he was. The essay’s arguments were quickly challenged by historians, whose critiques the author rebuffed in an acerbic and cantankerous fashion. Within weeks and months after publishing the study, its author moved on to conduct other monumental studies and did not return to the original study’s subject matter until close to the end of his life, when the essays were thoroughly revised and made part of a much larger project comparing the interface of religion and economics in the major religions. Since the author’s death, there have been studies addressing the genesis of the original essays, the significance of the changes made in their revision, the original and revised essays’ status in the larger context of the author’s work, their extension both stepping back and moving forward in time, and, last but not least, their shortcomings and aberrations, real and imagined.1 The work itself has been translated into numerous languages.

Green Harvard University Abstract Although the primary meaning of Max Weber’s concept of dis- enchantment is as a sociological condition (the retreat of magic and myth from social life through processes of secularization and rationalization), as Weber himself makes clear in his address, “Sci- ence as a Vocation,” disenchantment can also be a philosophical act: an unusual form of moral discourse that derives new ethical direction out of the very untenability of a previously robust moral tradition. INTRODUCTION "Not a narrow nationalism but the philosophic romanticism of Schelling, Gories, Cruezer and Kanne, the view that the mythos glimpsed more of truth than reason, impelled the brothers Grimm to make such great collec- tions of folk poetry as the Kinder- und Hausmdrchen" (30, p 173). And again: "The brothers Grimm had no thought of breeding an overweening nationalism, but rather of paving the way for a profounder comprehension of German character, a national self-knowledge" (30, p. 174). These two conclusions, reached in 1937 by Rudolf Stadelmann, then of the University of Freiburg i. Br., tend to relieve the famed German philologists, founders of scientific Germanistics, of the onus of "narrow" and "overweening" na- tionalism that has caused an enormous amount of trouble in recent years. Since nationalism has become for the European of our age "the most im- portant thing in the world, more important than civilization, humanity, de- cency, kindness, pity, more important than life itself" (Sir Norman Angell), and since nationalism, far from weakening, is growing even more stronger as nations everywhere grow more national in thought and in deed, an examination of nationalistic aspects of the work of the two gifted brothers would seem to be in order.
