The Great Russian Explorers and Navigators the North Pole Has Long А.Ш. Хуранов 4 курс, Высшая школа политического управления и инновационного менеджмента науч. рук. доц. Л.И. Миляева The Development of the Arctic: the Great Russian Explorers and Navigators The North Pole has long attracted the attention of travelers and explorers, who, overcoming incredible difficulties, penetrated farther and farther north, discovered the cold Arctic islands and archipelagos and put them on the map. They were representatives of different peoples of the world. Among them are our compatriots: Fedor Litke, Semyon Chelyuskin, the brothers Laptev, Georgy Sedov, Vladimir Rusanov. Russian pomors and explorers already in the middle of the XVI century, using tributaries of Siberian rivers, sailed to the Arctic Ocean and along its shores. In the years 1686-1688 the trade expedition of Ivan Tolstoukhov by passed the Taimyr peninsula by sea from the west to the east on three coves. In 1712 the explorers Mercury Vagin and Yakov Permyakov first visited the Big Lyakhovsky Island, initiating the discovery and exploration of the entire group of the Novosibirsk Islands. Russian explorers Ferdinand Vrangel and Fedor Mateushkin (lyceum friend of Alexander Pushkin) made a significant contribution to the study of the eastern section of the Northern Sea Route. In the years 1820-1824, they inspected and plotted the mainland from the mouth of the Kolyma to the Kolyuchin Bay and carried out four unparalleled trekking in the region along the drifting ice. Fedor Litke went down in history as a major explorer of the Arctic. In the years 1821-1824, Litke described the shores of Novaya Zemlya, made many geographic definitions of places along the White Sea coast, and explored the depths of the fairway and the dangerous shallows of this sea. Described this expedition in the book “A four-time trip to the Arctic Ocean in 1821-1824.” A completely new stage in the exploration and transport development of the Arctic Ocean is connected with the name of the famous Russian navigator Admiral Stepan Makarov. According to his idea in 1899, the first powerful icebreaker Ermak was built in England, which was supposed to be used for regular communication with the Ob and the Yenisei through the Kara Sea and for ocean scientific research to the highest latitudes. Despite a number of expeditions in the early twentieth century, many of which made major geographical discoveries, the Arctic Ocean remained poorly understood. 70 Since 1923, for only ten years on the coast and the islands of the Arctic Ocean, 19 polar radio-meteorological stations have been built. Soon, Russia became a leader in the exploration and exploitation of the North Pole. More than a dozen international expeditions are now operating in the Arctic with the participation of Russia. More and more countries are showing interest in participating in the active development of the Arctic zone. This is due to a change in the global climate, opening up new opportunities for establishing regular shipping in the Arctic Ocean, as well as greater access to the minerals of this vast region. Сибирко The Role of the Competitive Element in the Development of the Entrepreneurial Activity The entrepreneurship is the most important element of the market economy and the success in this area depends on many factors among which one of the main is the competitive element. It’s safe to say that the entrepreneurship and the competition are two sides of the same coin. At this time most people are engaged in business. For their work they choose different directions and their affairs also lead in different ways, in accordance with their own concepts of how to properly build their business. But regardless of the fact that they have a difference in views, it is unlikely that anyone will argue with the fact that every entrepreneur on the thorny path to success has always been waiting for, is waiting and will wait for annoying competitors. Moreover, the competition is as inevitable as the need to promote one’s business using the creative approach and originality. Each businessman perceives differently his competitors, someone competitors lead to fury, violence and frenzy, while others, on the contrary, meet their competitors as 71.

  • Changes in Glacier Extent on North Novaya Zemlya in the Twentieth Century Jaapjan Zeeberg and Steven L
The Holocene 11,2 (2001) pp. 161–175 Changes in glacier extent on north Novaya Zemlya in the twentieth century JaapJan Zeeberg and Steven L. Forman (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (M/C 186), University of Illinois at Chicago, 845 W Taylor Street, Chicago, Illinois 60607–7059, USA) Received 4 February 2000; revised manuscript accepted 4 April 2000 Abstract: Glacier retreat on north Novaya Zemlya for the past century was documented by registering glacier terminus positions from expedition and topographic maps and remotely sensed images. Recession of tidewater calving glaciers on north Novaya Zemlya in the first half of the twentieth century was relatively rapid (Ͼ300 myr−1), consistent with post-‘Little Ice Age’ warming documented by a 122-year instrumental record from Malye Karmakuly. The glaciers completed 75 to 100% of the net twentieth-century retreat by 1952. Between 1964 and 1993 half of the studied glaciers were stable; the remainder retreated modest distances of Ͻ2.5 km. This stability coincides with decreasing average temperatures, especially during the winter, which is counter to model prediction. There is a statistically significant covariance of unfiltered winter and summer temperatures from Novaya Zemlya and a smoothed 88-year record of SSTs in the southern Barents Sea (r Ͼ 0.75). Elevated SST in the Barents Sea appear to reflect increased advection of warm North Atlantic water associated with a positive North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAO). Winter temperatures are periodically correlated with the NAO (r = 0.75 to 0.9) reflecting repeated penetration of Atlantic cyclones into the Arctic. During the twentieth century, an overall positive glacier mass balance trend at Novaya Zemlya is associated with a positive phase of the NAO, elevated southern Barents Sea SST, and a concomitant increase of winter precipitation.

INTRODUCTION: ARCTIC NEWS HIGHLIGHTS According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2017 Arctic Report Card, while 2017 did not shatter as many records as 2016, the Arctic shows no sign of returning to the reliably frozen region it was decades ago.1 Arctic temperatures continue to increase at double the global rate.2 2017 marked the end of the United States’ chairmanship of the Arctic Council and the beginning of another term for Finland. At the May 11, 2017 Fairbanks Ministerial hosted by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson – the first ministerial in which all eight member states were represented by their Foreign Ministers – the Arctic Council member states adopted the Fairbanks Declaration and the Agreement on Enhancing International Arctic Scientific Cooperation, the council’s third legally binding agreement.

  • The United States and the “Icebreaker Gap”
SUGGESTED READINGS The United States and the “Icebreaker Gap” Compiled by P. Whitney Lackenbauer and Troy Bouffard At a time when many of us find ourselves working from home in social isolation, NAADSN has invited various academic subject matter experts to suggest core readings on topics related to North American and Arctic Defence and Security. The internet is filled with perspectives and opinions. These lists are intended to help direct policy shapers, practitioners, and academics to credible open access sources, available online free of charge, that reflect leading-edge research and thinking. The compilers of each list have been asked to select readings that are accessibly written (ie. they are not filled with excessive jargon), offer a diversity of viewpoints, and encourage critical thinking and debate. Melody Schreiber, “Trump calls for an accelerated expansion of the U.S. icebreaker fleet,” Arctic Today, 10 June 2020. President Donald Trump has called for a faster expansion of the U.S. icebreaker fleet than previously planned — including exploring the possibility of arming icebreakers and powering them with nuclear propulsion. In a memorandum directed to several U.S. agencies, Trump set a 2029 target for an expanded icebreaker fleet, and directed officials to consider leasing vessels, including from foreign entities, to ensure some new icebreakers could be available by 2022. The memo focused on national security and commercial activities. It also tasked officials with identifying at least four domestic and international bases for the new fleet. Sherri Goodman, a senior fellow at the Wilson Center and former U.S. deputy under-secretary of defense, said the document acknowledges “the icebreaker gap” in the U.S.

  • Tradition and Novelty in Stepan Pisakhov`S Tales
Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education Tradition and Novelty in Stepan Pisakhov`s Tales — Larissa A. Johansen RUS 3930 Master Thesis in Russian Literature May 2017 D0 PREFACE AND ACKOWLEDGEMENTS It is tempting to start my thesis by quoting and paraphrasing one of the most famous tales by Stepan Pisakhov, “Do not listen if you do not like it”, into “Do not read if you do not like it”. Writing a master thesis had been a long and interesting journey, anchored in my childhood‘s first fairy tales`s impressions. Who could have known then that half a lifetime later, wise but humorous words of a local storyteller will awake my old memories of and curiosity about Stepan Pisakhov‘s creative writing. On the journey of thesis writing, I have acquired a great deal of new knowledge and at the same time refreshed and reassessed what I have learned by my wonderful professors in the University of Tromsø who I would like to thank sincerely. I would like to thank my supervisor, Professor of Russian Literature and Culture Andrei Rogatchevski, for his professional advice and encouragement throughout my work on this thesis. Work with primary sources in summer 2016 at the Arkhangelsk Regional Scientific Library named after Nikolay Dobrolubov, was incredibly inspiring. I would like to thank the Department of local history and literature for help and support in my work. I would also like to thank my International Baccalaureate students, who inspired me to look at more possibilities suitable for my educational and professional competency through working on my thesis.
