Snowden, Blacks in Antiquity (1970) The ancient confusion between Ethiopia and India persists into the late European Enlightenment. Instances of the confusion can be found in the writings of distinguished Orientalists such as William Jones and also of a number of other Europeans now less well known and less highly regarded. -
New Discoveries in the Tomb of Khety Ii at Asyut*
Originalveröffentlichung in: The Bulletin ofthe Australian Centre for Egyptology 17, 2006, S. 79-95 NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE TOMB OF KHETY II AT ASYUT* Mahmoud El-Khadragy University of Sohag, Egypt Since September 2003, the "Asyut Project", a joint Egyptian-German mission of Sohag University (Egypt), Mainz University (Germany) and Münster University (Germany), has conducted three successive seasons of fieldwork and surveying in the cemetery at Asyut, aiming at documenting the architectural features and decorations of the First Intermediate Period and 1 Middle Kingdom tombs. Düring these seasons, the cliffs bordering the Western Desert were mapped and the geological features studied, providing 2 the clearest picture of the mountain to date (Figure l). In the south and the north, the mountain is cut by small wadis and consists of eleven layers of limestone. Rock tombs were hewn into each layer, but some chronological preferences became obvious: the nomarchs of the First Intermediate Period and the early Middle Kingdom chose layer no. 6 (about two thirds of the way up the mountain) for constructing their tombs, while the nomarchs ofthe 12th Dynasty preferred layer no. 2, nearly at the foot of the gebel. Düring the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom, stones were quarried in the 3 south ofthe mountain (017.1), thus not violating the necropolis. Düring the New Kingdom, however, stones were hewn from the necropolis of the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom (Ol5.1), sometimes in the nomarchs' tombs themselves (N12.2, N13.2, see below). 4 5 The tomb of Khety II (Tomb IV; N12.2) is located between the tomb of Iti- ibi (Tomb III; N12.1), his probable father, to the south and that of Khety I 6 (Tomb V; Ml 1.1), which is thought to be the earliest of the three, to the north. -

The Dababiya Core: A window into Paleocene to Early Eocene depositional history in Egypt basedoncoccolithstratigraphy Marie-Pierre Aubry1 and Rehab Salem1,2 1Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Rutgers University, 610 Taylor Road, NJ 08854-8066, USA email: [email protected] 2Geology Department, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, 31527, Tanta, Egypt [email protected] ABSTRACT: The composite Paleocene-lower Eocene Dababiya section recovered in the Dababiya Quarry core and accessible in out- crop in the Dababiya Quarry exhibits an unexpected contrast in thickness between the Lower Eocene succession (~Esna Shales) and the Paleocene one (~Dakhla Shales and Tarawan Chalk). We investigate the significance of this contrast by reviewing calcareous nannofossil stratigraphic studies performed on sections throughout Egypt. We show that a regional pattern occurs, and distinguish six areas—Nile Valley, Eastern Desert and western Sinai, Central and eastern Sinai, northern Egypt and Western Desert. Based on patterns related to thicknesses of selected lithobiostratigraphic intervals and distribution of main stratigraphic gaps, we propose that the differences in the stratigraphic architecture between these regions result from differential latest Paleocene and Early Eocene subsidence following intense Middle to Late Paleocene tectonic activity in the Syrian Arc folds as a result of the closure of the Neo-Tethys. ABSTRACT A study has been conducted using hydrochemistry and environmental isotopes (deuterium, oxygen-18 & carbon-14) on the Nubian Sandstone aquifer which underlies the Western desert oases. The concerned three oases (El-Farafra, El-Dakhla and El-Kharga) covers an area about 8000 km2 from the total area of the Western Desert. Seventy one water samples were collected from these three oases and subjected to both chemical and isotopic analysis to evaluate their groundwater resources. The hydrochemical data of these water samples reveals that thier salinity doesn't exceed 500 mg/I as well as the presence of marine and meteoric water types with different percentage. The mineralization of the investigated groundwater may be evoluated under flusing the original marine water entrapped between the pores of the aquifer matrix by meteoric water which is furthely modified through leaching, dissolution, cation exchange and oxidation-reduction processes. The investigated groundwater indicates some sort of quality hazards for drinking and domestic purposes due to the high concentration of both iron (agverage 6 mg/1) and hydrogen sulphide (average 2.5 nig/I ) relative to WHO standard. This water can be used safety for all kinds of livestocks. -

Ethnic Variation of */tʕ/ in Aswan Arabic Abstract This study aims to provide some acoustic documentation of two unusual and variable allophones in Aswan Arabic. Although many rural villages in southern Egypt enjoy ample linguistic documentation, many southern urban areas remain understudied. Arabic linguists have investigated religion as a factor influencing linguistic ariationv instead of ethnicity. This study investigates the role of ethnicity in the under-documented urban dialect of Aswan Arabic. The author conducted sociolinguistic interviews in Aswan from 2012 to 2015. He elected to measure VOT as a function of allophone, ethnicity, sex, and age in apparent time. The results reveal significant differences in VOT lead and lag for the two auditorily encoded allophones. The indigenous Nubians prefer a different pronunciation than their Ṣa‘īdī counterparts who trace their lineage to Arab roots. Women and men do not demonstrate distinct pronunciations. Age also does not appear to be affecting pronunciation choice. However, all three variables interact with each other. -

First “Organized” F T H E B I B O L E N D A L Bible-work in E H T th N 19 Century I K R Jerusalem O W E L B (1816–1831) I B Part VII: Five Bible-men in Jerusalem (1823–1824) by Kai Kjær-Hansen In the spring of 1823, a trio consisting of Joseph Wolff and two American missionaries – Pliny Fisk and Jonas King – had worked as Bible-men in Jerusalem. Fisk and King had soon sold their rather limited supply of mainly non-Hebrew Scriptures. Throughout the period Wolff was in a position to supply Hebrew Scriptures, but he was only able to distribute a few to Jews in Jerusalem. Four months after leaving Jerusalem, Fisk is back in the town, and a reorganization of the work is carried out. A Jerusalem Bible Society was not established, but at the turn of the year 1823–1824 a “Bible Society Room” is set up in Jerusalem. A good many Scriptures are distributed over these five months. The present challenge is to uncover the relationship between the distribution of non-Hebrew Scriptures to Christians – be they residents of Jerusalem or pilgrims – and Hebrew Scriptures to Jews. Pliny Fisk is the only one of these five Bible-men who remains in Jerusalem all through this period of five months, from November 21, 1823, to April 22, 1824.1 The others are listed chronologically. William Jowett, a resident of Malta, is sent out by the Church Missionary Society (CMS); he arrives together with Fisk and stays in Jerusalem for approximately three weeks. -

Harrell1 From Early Dynastic times onward, limestone was the construction material of choice for An- cient Egyptian temples, pyramids, and mastabas wherever limestone bedrock occurred, that is, along the Mediterranean coast, in the northern parts of the Western and Eastern Deserts, and in the Nile Valley between Cairo and Esna (fig. 1). Sandstone bedrock is present in the Nile Valley from Esna south into Sudan as well as in the adjacent deserts, and within this region it was the only building stone employed.2 Sandstone was also imported into the Nile Valley’s limestone region as far north as el-‘Sheikh Ibada and nearby el-‘Amarna, where it was used for New Kingdom tem- ples. There are sandstone temples further north in the Bahariya and Faiyum depressions, but these were built with local materials. The first large-scale use of sandstone occurred near Edfu in Upper Egypt, where it was employed for interior pavement and wall veneer in an Early Dynastic tomb at Hierakonpolis3 and also for a small 3rd Dynasty pyramid at Naga el-Goneima.4 Apart from this latter structure, the earliest use of sandstone in monumental architecture was for Middle Kingdom temples in the Abydos-Thebes region with the outstanding example the 11th Dynasty mortuary temple of Mentuhotep II (Nebhepetre) at Deir el-Bahri. -
