Last month’s “Woodie” regatta had the old, tra- ditional wood boats out at it again, racing off the Cityfront. Jock had Oriole flying around the course with her shiny new suit of Pineapple Sails. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract The opening of Japan to foreign residence brought not only the same system of treaty ports and foreign settlements as had developed in China to solve the problem of the meeting of two very different cultures, but also led to the same people who had known the system in China operating it or living under it in Japan* The events of 1859— 1869 gave foreigners fixed ideas about the Japanese which subsequent changes could do little to alter* The foreign settlers quickly abandoned any ideas they may have had about making close contact with the Japanese* They preferred to recreate as near as possible the life they had lived in Europe or America.

HERALD MAGAZINE OF THE HEREND PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY HISTORY Sailing PAINTING The Formula 1 vase on the podium HEREND INTERIOR DESIGN Homely eclecticism INTRODUCTION DEAR HEREND HERALD READERS, The restaurant where I arrive has a pleasant homely feel; the light from the streetlamps impart a warm glow on the windows. Familiar friends, an inviting aroma and congenial company. We are invited to a beauti- fully set table. Suddenly, the noise, struggles and tiredness of the day come to mind and I realise it will be another late night. We have spent all day thinking about past inherited values, responsibly planning the future while at the same time not allowing the present to slip away. I am reassured that I am part of a community and culture with a lengthy history of creativity and the ability to renew itself. As the first among equals, the pressure and responsibility on us is even greater. We are bold and capable of change while others are still trying to find their way. They complain and blame others, and try to cash in on their past. We, however, carry out the task in hand and know how to pass on 19th century traditions to a 21st century world. I am suddenly struck by the realisation that my thoughts are elsewhere – I am working again. I quickly bring my thoughts back to the present giving my full attention to my host. We are seated and I find myself surrounded by many guests, my host to one side, my partner to the other. I glance at the table and a smile spreads across my face, I will be among my beloved friends after all.

An offshore race stretching 628 nautical miles, the contest cele- brates its 69th edition this year. Following its annual start from Sydney on 26 December, the famous racecourse leads the fleet down the New South Wales coast of the Tasman Sea and across the Bass Strait to Hobart, capital of Australia’s island state, Tasmania. Rolex has sponsored this classic race since 2002. A REWARDING HISTORY First run in 1945, the Rolex Sydney Hobart has grown from noble yet humble beginnings to become one of the greatest sailing contests worldwide. Over the years it has attracted politicians, business tycoons, sporting legends and the cream of sailing talent, while remaining true to the spirit of its founders in challenging skilled and enthusiastic Corinthian crews. In recent contests, a fleet of 80 international yachts has typically participated. This year is no exception, with yachts from Cyprus, Germany, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom joining representatives from most Australian states. The event boasts a rich history that is sewn into the fabric of Australian sport and world sailing. Victory in the inaugural edition was claimed by Captain John Illingworth’s Rani. A British boat, Rani was one of nine yachts to compete. As the first to receive the prestigious Tattersall’s Cup – awarded to the race’s overall winner – Illingworth and Rani have become two of the event’s most illustrious names.

The rhythm remains elevated, with 18 ships per week. In number of ships to be demolished as well as tonnage, India, with 120 ships (42%), remains destination number 1 before Bangladesh with 55 (24%), Pakistan with 25 (11%), and China with 23 (9%). The accumulated demolition will permit the recycling of nearly 2 million tons of metal. The crisis is over ! The prices offered by the demolition yards have significantly increased and continue to increase in the yards of the Indian subcontinent, but also in China; they have reached $400, even $500 for oil tankers and more for ships containing stainless steel.
