De beklijvende cinema die hij maakte met onafhankelijke producties als Mala Noche (1985), Drugstore Cowboy (1989), My Own Pri- vate Idaho (1991) en Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993) leek ver weg toen Psycho (1998) en Finding Forrester (2000) op het publiek werden losgelaten. Met Gerry (2002) en Elephant (2003) keert Van Sant terug naar de onafhankelijke filmmakerij en scheert hij weer de creatieve toppen van voorheen.. Gerry is een prachtig stukje minimale cinema dat aantoont dat Van Sant wel degelijk terug op het juiste creatieve spoor zit. Gerry is met zijn magistrale beelden, sobere dialogen, beheerste acteurprestaties van Ben Affleck en Matt Damon en sporadische flarden muziek van componist Arvo Pärt een ware verademing geworden. Het is echter in 2003 met Elephant dat Van Sant weer volop in de schijnwerpers komt te staan. In tegenstelling tot Michael Moores Bowling For Columbine is Elephant echter een fictief verhaal zonder moreel oordeel. Van Sant zoekt ook geen verklaringen voor de gewelddadige uitbarstingen van scholieren en laat de kijker zo weinig mogelijk toe om de gebeurtenissen emotioneel te omkaderen. Deze benadering werd hem door de Ameri- kaanse pers niet in dank afgenomen maar leverde hem enorm veel bijval op in Europa. Elephant werd bekroond met de Gouden Palm én Van Sant sleepte ook nog de prijs voor de beste regie in de wacht op het Film Festival van Cannes (2003). ✯ GERRYGERRY (USA / 2002/ 103’ / 35 mm) Scenario: Gus Van Sant, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck Cast: Matt Damon, Casey Affleck Scenario Gus Van Sant, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck Cast Matt Damon, Casey Affleck Gerry en Gerry (Affleck en Damon), twee jeugdvrienden, maken samen een reis door het Zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten. Ze besluiten te voet Death Valley in te trekken om het ding te zien. Wat het ding is ko- men we nooit te weten maar de twee Gerry’s wijken er wel voor van het toeristische pad af. Als ze het onuitgesproken ding niet vinden keren ze terug. Al vlug groeit het besef dat ze zonder water, voedsel, kompas of gsm en zonder enig idee van waar hun wagen zich bevindt, behoorlijk in de problemen zitten. De situatie wordt aanvankelijk nog gerelativeerd, ze hebben immers nog sigaretten. De uren worden echter dagen en de sfeer wordt alsmaar grimmiger. Nate komt van de football-training en zoekt zijn vriendin Carrie voor de lunch. John laat zijn vaders autosleutels op het secretariaat achter want zijn broer komt die oppikken. Brittany, Jordan en Nicole roddelen en klagen over de bemoeienissen van hun moe- ders. Michelle haast zich naar de bibliotheek en Eli neemt nog wat foto’s van John die buiten het gras oploopt. John kruist het pad van Alex en Eric. Een ogenschijnlijk doodgewone dag, maar het is het niet. Muziek Kevin Shields, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus & Mary Chain, Squarepusher, Peaches, Roxy Music.. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) en Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) zijn twee Amerikanen in Tokio. Bob is een filmster op zijn retour die in Tokio een commercial voor een whiskymerk komt inblikken. Charlotte is een jonge, pas afgestudeerde filosofiestudente die achter haar man (Giovanni Ribisi), een werkverslaafde fotograaf, aanholt. Tijdens een van de talloze slapeloze nachten kruist het pad van de lusteloze Bob en de naar aandacht verlangende Charlotte zich in de luxueuze hotelbar. De toevallige ontmoeting leidt tot een verrassende vriendschap. Samen ondernemen ze memorabele uitstapjes in de voor hen zo onbegrijpelijke Japanse megapolis. Het leven lijkt hen eindelijk terug wat toe te lachen... Met Lost in Translation is het goed raak voor Sofia Coppola. De schaduw van vader Francis wordt definitief afgegooid en drie Golden Globes en een handvol Academy Award-nominaties bekronen terecht de inventieve regie en vooral het knappe scenario. Coppola wou haar ervaringen als vreemdelinge in Tokio en de misverstanden tussen mensen weergeven, vermengt met aspecten des levens waar ze zelf over nadacht. Dingen als romantiek, getrouwd zijn en volwassen worden. Met een kleine camera, zonder extra licht en met de mensen op straat als figuranten bouwt ze discreet een sereen beeld op van een bevreemdende stad. Bill Muray (Charlie’s Angels, Royal Tenenbaums) schittert als Bob, de acteur op retour en Scarlett Johansson (The Man Who Wasn’t There, Ghost World) vult Murray knap aan als de radeloze Charlotte. Sofia Coppola laat net als in Virgin Suicides (1999) muziek een belangrijke rol spelen. Air is terug van de partij en flarden van o.a. Roxy Music, Squarepusher, Peaches, Kevin Shields en My Bloody Valentine zetten de perfecte DATUM za 17 april (O.V.!) toon voor deze bijzondere prent. Beste Actrice (Naomi Watts), Beste Acteur in een bijrol (Benicio Del Toro) De relatie tussen Professor Paul Rivers (Sean Penn) en zijn vrouw Mary (Charlotte Gainsbourg) wordt zwaar op de proef gesteld. Paul is ongeneeslijk ziek en wacht op een harttransplantatie en Mary hoopt via kunstmatige inseminatie zwanger te worden. Cristina Peck (Naomi Watts) probeert haar roekeloze verleden achter zich te laten door een geliefde oudere zus te zijn voor Claudia (Clea Duvall), een goede echtgenote voor Michael (Danny Huston) en een liefhebbende moeder voor haar twee dochtertjes. Helemaal onderaan de sociale ladder zien we ex-gedetineerde Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Torro) en zijn vrouw Marianne (Melissa leo) vechten om aan de basisbehoeften van hun twee kinderen te voldoen. Jack zoekt ondertussen als herboren Christen zijn heil in de religie. Een tragisch ongeval met verschillende dodelijke slachtoffers verbindt uiteindelijk hun lot. Paul wordt geconfronteerd met zijn eigen sterfelijkheid. Cristina neemt een verrassend besluit om met het verleden in het reine te komen en Jacks geloof ondergaat een ultieme test. Om in het reine te komen met zichzelf moet elk van hen een verscheurende keuze maken ten koste van iemand anders... De Mexicaanse Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu debuteerde in 2000 met Amores Perros, een met prijzen beladen knaller van een film die drie emotionele verhalen laat samenkomen door een ongeval in Mexico City. Iñárritu werkt voor 21 Grams opnieuw met schrijver Guillermo Arriaga en vertelt opnieuw drie verhalen met een gemene deler. Verlies, verslaving, verplichtingen, geloof, hoop, toevalligheden, wraak, schuldgevoelens, en vergiffenis, het zijn allemaal elementen uit het dagdagelijkse maar evenzeer complexe leven. Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu weeft er een subtiele prent mee die ook nu weer lonkt naar het prijzen- kabinet. Bij het ter perse gaan van deze New Releases-editie zat 21 Grams mee in de running voor twee Oscars en het publiek van het Film Festival van Venetië bekroonde 21 Grams uitvoerig. Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive, The Ring), Benicio Del Torro (Traffic, Usual Suspects) en Sean Penn (Dead Man DATUM vr 30 april Walking, Mystic River) vertolken op een schitterende manier Iñárritus idee over de mens en zijn ziel, die 21 gram die de mens verliest als hij sterft... Postrock Sebastian Thomson - Drum, stem, bas, gitaar dekt allang de lading niet meer, Trans Am is immers veel meer dan dat. Ze leverden soundtracks voor een tiental skateboard films, haalden de vocoder boven om stomende electro tracks te ondersteunen lichtjaren voor er van een 80’s en electro revival sprake was en wisten zelfs het hard rock legertje te bekoren met het zijproject ‘Trans Champs’.

    Retina.it is Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono. They met at the beginning of the 90's where both engaged in various neapolitan clubs. After discovering to have the same interests, tastes and bents on music, they decided to create something together. In '94 they met dj Rino Cerrone and together they gave birth to the Qmen, one of the first Tekno Neapolitan project. With this name the trio sent to press 3x 12" with italian and foreign labels. Lino and Nicola's interest, more inclined to research, had made them put in reserve their attention to techno music devote themselves to the studying of new sound solutions for more than 4 years. From the ashes of Qmen, Retina.it project rises. Their music soon impressed the Hefty Records of Chicago favourably and they decided to publish their exordium Lp "Volcano waves 1-8" (2001) 8 pieces among experimentation, spaces passages and rhythmic vibrations, heritage of a common tekno background never denied. After the record, some 12" and an Ep (Immediate Actions) followed, in which they proposed different point of views, always in mutations from which you can examine the electronic matter. Waiting for the release of their new work the Retina.it appeared with some of their pieces often unreleased in various compilations, among which recycling buzz for the french label Amanita records, Batofar cheche l'Italie, cared by Batofar of Paris, on the italian underground scene, and the two collection of the Hefty Immediate action and Sample this (enclosed to " the wire "magazine). They also attempted remix (la gatta mammona by 99 Posse) and cooperations, among which those with the DRM, and with Nous (an electronic music project composed by Marco Messina and Meg) in a piece for the soundtrack of the performance " The tempest" (Shakespeare).
