Monism and the Problem of Interaction Our second unit consists of readings from the master works of two monists: Thomas Hobbes and Baruch (Benedict) Spinoza. Monism is motivated largely by the problem of interaction in the theory of mind. The problem of interaction is to describe how our bodies and minds could interact, if they are indeed, as Descartes argues, two independent substances. Our bodies affect our minds; our minds affect our bodies. If they are independent substances, it is hard to see how they could do so. Gilbert Ryle, defending behaviorism about the mind in the twentieth century, accused Descartes of having to rely on “theoretical shuttlecocks” to transfer information from one domain to the other. Or, to put it in a Hamilton-relevant way: Why does the mind get drunk when the body does the drinking? To some people, the problem of interaction for a substance dualist like Descartes appears intractable. In order to focus the question, Descartes posits that interactions between the mind and body take place in one particular place in the human body, the seat of the soul. Descartes located the seat of the soul in the pineal gland. Here is a copy of a letter Descartes wrote about the pineal gland. Descartes’s view that the pineal gland is the location where the soul interacts with the body does not solve the problem of interaction; it merely locates the problem.

    Craig Martin CAUSATION IN DESCARTES’ LES MÉTÉORES AND LATE RENAISSANCE ARISTOTELIAN METEOROLOGY INTRODUCTION Over seventy years ago, Étienne Gilson showed the parallels between Descartes’ Les météores and the Coimbrans’ textbook that was based on Aristotle’s Meteorology. The topics treated in Descartes’ work follow those found in the frequently-taught Jesuit textbook. They both discussed the formation of clouds, rain, rainbows and other lights in the sky, minerals and salts, and the cause of winds and earthquakes.1 The similarities do not end at the structure and topics treated that Gilson pointed out but extend to large portions of the treatises’ content. To be sure, differences appear, but many Aristotelian meteorological concepts are found throughout Descartes’ treatise without being changed at all or only in a minor way. Descartes’ Les météores was neither revolutionary, nor was it intended to be revolutionary. Les météores was first published in 1637 together with the Discours de la méthode, La géométrie, and La dioptrique. Some recent studies on Descartes’ physics and the Les météores have emphasized the eighth discourse where Descartes explained the rainbow through a geometrical analysis of refraction.2 This emphasis has given the appearance that his study on meteorology was part of Descartes’ larger goal of applying mathematics to natural philosophy as he did in the accompanying La dioptrique. All kinds of motion were of interest, but a particular problem was the explanation of projectile motion – objects flying through the air. Ancient science tried to explain all motion as either Some sort of stability, e.g. focus on planetary orbits rather than on the moving planet itself. Or, as the result of direct contact with a motive force. SC/NATS 1730, XV 2 Aristotle on motion Aristotle divided motions on Earth into three categories: Natural motion – objects seeking their natural place. Forced motion – objects being pushed or pulled. Voluntary motion – objects moving themselves, e.g. animals. These reasonable categories ran into difficulty explaining projectile motion. SC/NATS 1730, XV 3 1 Aristotle’s Antiperistasis A projectile, e.g., an arrow, was not deemed capable of voluntary motion. Therefore its motion must be either natural or forced (or a combination). Natural motion would take the (heavy) arrow down to the ground. Forced motion required direct contact. Solution: Antiperistasis. The flying arrow divided the air before it, which rushed around to the back of the arrow and pushed it forward. By redefining the notion of sentience (sensus) as the ability, inherent in the two principle forces of the universe (heat and cold), to react and adapt to a reality in constant change, Telesio championed a view of nature and man that radically departed from the principles of Aristotle’s natural philosophy. In developing his new notion of sentience, Telesio insisted on the aspects of receptivity and awareness. Through the first, he stressed the primary role of pneu- matic matter (spiritus), understood as a thin, supple and swift vehicle capable of ac- counting for all material changes in the universe ; through the second, he raised the property of self-perception to the level of a universal natural property. This allowed him to replace the key Aristotelian concept of unintentional teleology with the idea of a self-organising power inherent in nature and to endow the material spirit with the ability to feel and react to all phenomena occurring in the universe (spiritus om- niscius omnino). Fire is argued to be a philosophical archetype and its role in the early concept of four elements is discussed. The Indian, Arabic and Greek historical bases are mentioned. Alchemy is briefly reviewed as a source of the wider adoption of fire. The era of renaissance and the new age are also included. The message of fire/heat is nowadays focused on the progress of civilization, with the assumption of engines as in- formation transducers based on the conscious exploitation of fire. The role of chaos is emphasized.

This proposal was developed to be improved in high schools, colleges and training courses for teachers-in-service. A videofilm (15 minutes du- ration) was produced in NTSC with several excepts from the classical science fiction films. The “physical phenomena” presented in science-fiction films are a powerful way to explore the common sense ideas of students and teachers about specific scientific contents and also to explore the development of conceptual frameworks in the history of science.
