U-M AEC Sustainability for Design and Construction Sustainability for Design and Sustainability for Design and Construction Special Instructions to Designers Approach to Energy Conservation and Sustainability for Design and Construction Codes and Regulatory Agencies The University of Michigan is committed to environmental Special Building stewardship and supports implementation of sustainable design Technical Sections concepts for new construction and renovations. Leadership in (CSI Divisions 1 Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ) Silver Preferred for all new non-clinical Manufacturers Lists certification is mandatory buildings and additions (new construction) with a construction Office Space budget of $10,000,000 or greater. UM Hospitals and Health Centers The University of Michigan strives for increased energy Facilities Planning and Development efficiency as the most effective way to reduce its carbon Design Deliverables footprint and concentrates its design effort on maximizing Effective Date energy efficiencies. This practice not only minimizes total energy resource use, but helps moderate future energy costs Design Guidelines and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. The State of Michigan Home currently requires new construction to meet the American Association of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 90.1 1999. U-M is committed to exceeding this standard on all new construction and renovation projects and recently adopted ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007, which is more rigorous in its energy requirements. In addition, U-M has adopted the goal of exceeding ASHRAE 90.1-2007 energy code requirements by 30%. U-M currently requires the incorporation of numerous mandatory energy conservation measures on projects, requires comprehensive evaluation of additional energy efficiency measures, and requires comprehensive modeling of energy usage for proposed projects and development of energy impact statements at each phase of design. Currently, two sections of U-M’s Design Guidelines for Design and Construction outline U-M’s detailed requirements related to both energy efficiency as well as sustainable design and environmental stewardship: SID-D Energy and Water Conservation SID-K Sustainable Design and LEED Requirements Some Recent Projects and Sustainability Numerous capital projects have focused on maximizing energy efficiency as well as incorporating other sustainability http://www.umaec.umich.edu/desguide/sustainability.html[9/1/2010 8:48:00 AM] U-M AEC Sustainability for Design and Construction measures. The below Project Profiles highlight some of the specific measures incorporated in these recent projects: Couzens Hall Player Development Center for Intercollegiate Basketball Towlsey Center for Children Palmer Drive Development North Quad Biomedical Science Research Building Brehm Tower Michigan Stadium Renovation and Addition Project Intercollegiate Soccer Stadium In addition four major capital projects have pursued (or are currently pursuing) formal LEED certification. Where specific manufacturers or products are listed for a given building element, limit selection to the products listed. When, in your opinion, an unlisted product should be considered for inclusion in a project, consult with the Design Manager. Do not substitute this list for your professional judgment concerning appropriate products and materials. Where specific products are not listed for a given building element (i.e. curtain walls), base the selection of manufacturers, types, styles, or models on your professional judgment. Wherever possible, select the products of at least 3 manufacturers. Avoid the use of open ended "or equal" statements. This list is updated as needed. Obtain the current copy from the Design Manager.
