ANNUAL REPORT 2 018 ATLANTA Breakthrough Atlanta Annual Report 2018 page 1 WELCOME Dear Friends, 2018 has been a year of remarkable growth for Breakthrough Atlanta. We expanded our programs to serve a total of 686 students from 75 zip codes across metro Atlanta, equipping them with the skills and resources to succeed on the path to college. Middle school and ninth grade students in our High School Readiness Program experienced academic growth throughout the summer and school year, building critical skills in math, science, social studies and English language arts, as well as personal skills and habits to support their academic success. Breakthrough Atlanta’s College Prep Program achieved new milestones: our students graduating in the class of 2018 earned more than $3.5 million in scholarships and were accepted into 98 colleges and universities across the country. Through our six-year program, Breakthrough Atlanta supports our students every step of the way as they grow from sixth graders into high school graduates prepared to succeed in college and beyond. “… the class of 2018 earned more than $3.5 million CONTENTS in scholarships and were accepted into 98 colleges Welcome Letter ....................................................2 and universities across the country.” Leadership ............................................................3 In the summer of 2018, talented college students from across the country participated in Breakthrough Atlanta’s Students ................................................................4 Teaching Fellowship Program. My questions were regularly ignored or disregarded, and I was labeled as a talkative child who disrupted the class frequently. However, the Breakthrough Atlanta program helped me to maintain my passion for asking questions, seeking knowledge and growing my mind. Breakthrough gave me hope; I did not need to stop talking or be quiet, but instead, I needed to find ways to channel my gift of talking into something that would help me and others. Without the Breakthrough Atlanta program, I would not be as passionate about learning, and therefore I would not have accomplished all that I did.” page 4 Breakthrough Atlanta Annual Report 2018 IMPACT 85% 98 Student Class of 2018 enrolled in colleges/universities $3.5 college accepted $86,986.80 million average amount of scholarships combined scholarship total COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY ACCEPTANCES Agnes Scott College (6) Georgia Institute of Technology (2) North Carolina Central University (3) University of California, Irvine Alabama A&M University (4) Georgia Southern University (5) Ohio Dominican University University of California, Santa Barbara Alabama State University (2) Georgia State University (17) Ohio University University of Central Florida Albany State University (6) Gordon State College Oklahoma State University University of Denver Albion College Grand Canyon University Paine College University of Florida Atlanta Metropolitan State College Guliford College Penn State University University of Georgia (4) Auburn University (3) Gwinnett College Queens University University of Illinois Augusta University Hampton University (7) Reinhardt University University of Miami (2) Barry University (3) Hollins University Saint Leo University (2) University of Michigan Bethune-Cookman University Howard University (4) Samford University University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Brandeis University Iowa Wesleyan University Savannah State University (4) University of San Francisco (4) Claflin University Jacksonville State University South Carolina State University University of South Alabama (2) Clark Atlanta University Kansas State University Spelman College (6) University of South Carolina Clayton State University Kennesaw State University (3) Spring Hill College (3) University of Tampa Clemson University (2) Langston University St. Johns University (2) University of Tennessee Columbus State University (3) Louisiana State University (4) Stetson University University of Tennessee, Chattanooga Eastern Kentucky University Loyola Marymount University (3) Syracuse University University of West Georgia Emory University Loyola University, New Orleans (2) Tennessee State University (3) University of West Alabama Fisk University Marshall University Texas A&M University University of West Virginia Florida A&M University (4) Mary Baldwin University The Citadel Valdosta State University (6) Florida International University Mercer University Tulane University (2) Washington & Lee University Fordham University Middle Tennessee State University Tuskegee University (2) Wesleyan College (2) Fort Valley State University (3) Miles College University of Alabama (5) Wingate University (4) George Mason University Morehouse College University of Alabama, Birmingham Xavier University, Louisiana George Washington University (2) Norfolk State University University of Arizona (2) University of Missouri, Columbia Georgia College and State University (2) North Carolina A&T State University (3) University of California, Berkeley Breakthrough Atlanta Annual Report 2018 page 5 IMPACT Number of students served in FY 2017–2018 by grade 12 th 11 th 6th 10th 9th 7th 686 th grade) 75 th 578 Total Number of Students 686 • Class of 2018 (12 th grade) 75 • 2019 ( 11 th grade) 57 th 85% • 2020 (10 grade) 58 of Breakthrough Atlanta’s Class of 2018 students • 2021 (9th grade) 116 immediately enrolled in college compared to 60% of all • 2022 (8th grade) 99 economically disadvantaged students in the U.S. • 2023 (7th grade) 13 8 (source: Forbes) • 2024 (6th grade) 143 page 6 Breakthrough Atlanta Annual Report 2018 TRENT PRIMER TEACHERS Breakthrough Atlanta Teaching Fellow Major Summer 2017 & 2018 Music Education with concentrations in Choral and General Music School Graduate May 2019 Post Graduation Plans Georgia State University Floyd Middle School, Mableton, GA “Breakthrough Atlanta has helped me redefine the meaning of family by providing and encouraging an environment of creativity, nurturing, and support.
