ATLANTA Breakthrough Annual Report 2018 page 1 WELCOME

Dear Friends,

2018 has been a year of remarkable growth for Breakthrough Atlanta. We expanded our programs to serve a total of 686 students from 75 zip codes across metro Atlanta, equipping them with the skills and resources to succeed on the path to college.

Middle school and ninth grade students in our High School Readiness Program experienced academic growth throughout the summer and school year, building critical skills in math, science, social studies and English language arts, as well as personal skills and habits to support their academic success.

Breakthrough Atlanta’s College Prep Program achieved new milestones: our students graduating in the class of 2018 earned more than $3.5 million in scholarships and were accepted into 98 colleges and universities across the country. Through our six-year program, Breakthrough Atlanta supports our students every step of the way as they grow from sixth graders into high school graduates prepared to succeed in college and beyond.

“I often did not have the space in my school to truly explore myself as a learner and thinker. My questions were regularly ignored or disregarded, and I was labeled as a talkative child who disrupted the class frequently. However, the Breakthrough Atlanta program helped me to maintain my passion for asking questions, seeking knowledge and growing my mind. Breakthrough gave me hope; I did not need to stop talking or be quiet, but instead, I needed to find ways to channel my gift of talking into something that would help me and others. Without the Breakthrough Atlanta program, I would not be as passionate about learning, and therefore I would not have accomplished all that I did.” page 4 Breakthrough Atlanta Annual Report 2018 IMPACT 85% 98 Student Class of 2018 enrolled in colleges/universities $3.5 college accepted $86,986.80 million average amount of scholarships combined scholarship total

“I taught 9th grade English at Breakthrough after my junior year of college. I already knew that I had a passion for for teaching, but Breakthrough allowed me to explore that further. For the first time, I was put in a classroom with students, being entrusted with all of the responsibilities of a teacher. This was especially helpful to me as I would be student teaching during my upcoming school year. During my summer at Breakthrough, I learned how to manage my time and plan lessons according to the needs of my students. I learned about my strengths, but also my weaknesses, one of which was proper classroom management. With help from my instructional coach and the support of others on the Breakthrough staff, I was able to grow personally and professionally in my position as a Teaching Fellow. Breakthrough Atlanta is a great experience for students but also for the young adults who take on roles as their teachers.” Breakthrough Atlanta Annual Report 2018 page 7 IMPACT

Chick-fil-A Foundation and Breakthrough Atlanta Partner to put Westside Students on a Pathway to College

The Chick-fil-A Foundation and Breakthrough Atlanta announced a new collaboration in 2018 with Michael R. Hollis Innovation Academy, an Atlanta Public School serving students pre-K-8 in Atlanta’s Westside neighborhood. The partnership — the first of its kind for Breakthrough — created the opportunity for 90 of Hollis’ rising seventh, eighth and ninth graders (30 from each grade level) to attend Breakthrough’s six-week summer program over the next three years for free. In addition, the students will attend Breakthrough’s Super Saturdays program throughout the school year. The partnership is funded by the Chick-fil-A Foundation through a generous grant of $414,000.

“There is a huge disparity in college attainment and lifetime earning capacity in our city,” says Katie Post, Director of Development for Breakthrough Atlanta. “We want to level the playing field so that all of the city’s students have the same opportunities to reach their full potential and Chick-fil-A has proved to be a valuable partner in this work.”

Thankfully, the partnership extends beyond the grant and Chick-fil-A executives are volunteering in the Super Saturday program throughout the school year. And Carol Waddy, Director of Corporate and Foundation Community Affairs at the Chick-fil-A Foundation, is sharing her expertise as a member of the Breakthrough Atlanta Advisory Board. “We are extremely grateful to the Chick-fil-A Foundation for sharing their resources, time, and talented employees to help Breakthrough Atlanta put more students on a six-year path to success in college and beyond.

Thank you Breakthrough Atlanta Partners
