LEARNING FROM THE BEST Gabriel Masfurroll Foreword I first met Gabriel Masfurroll in the seventies, when he was a teenager and a competitive swimmer. At that time, swimming played a very important part in my life because the European Championships held in Barcelona in 1970, in which I participated actively, were an excellent yardstick for the Olympic Games of 1992. Masfurroll was living in the Residencia Joaquín Blume in Barcelona, run by my friend Ricardo Sánchez, and we had good friends in common such as Santiago Esteva and Maria Paz Corominas, swimmers who in their day were key figures in Spanish sport. I shall never forget something ‘Gaby’, as his friends call him, said to me when he was still very young: “Mr. Samaranch, when I grow up I want to be like you and match your achievements. I also love sport and believe I can do a lot for it”. It comes as no surprise to me, then, to see Masfurroll holding positions of responsibility in leading sporting institutions. A few years later, I met up with “Gaby” again when he was head of the Quirón Clinic in Barcelona. Since then we have kept in touch on a regular basis. We have met and written to each other on numerous occasions and I recall a beautiful picture, on display at the headquarters of the Olympic Committee in Lausanne, which he gave me on one of his visits. I have followed his career very closely over these years and that phrase “when I grow up I want to be like you”, made me take a keen interest in both his personal and professional development.

Zoals te verwachten, stelden ze bij HVV in 2013 ter viering van 135 jaar cricket, 130 jaar voetbal én 100 jaar clubblad een feestprogramma samen dat even fraai als afwisselend was. Waarbij het meest in het oog sprong dat op zaterdag 6 april Lucky Ajax (oud-Ajax) een wedstrijd mocht komen spelen – een groots gebaar van De Groote Haagsche, en het kan niet anders of die eervolle uitnodiging met afzender Van Hogenhoucklaan 37 moet op de Toekomst in Amsterdam tot grote opwinding hebben geleid. Op het jeugdcomplex van Ajax lopen sinds de Fluwelen Revolutie van Johan Cruijff zo veel oud-vedettes rond dat je er hele Panini-albums tot leven ziet komen. Wat was het voor pakweg Richard Witschge een voorrecht dat hij, na zijn jaren met Dennis Bergkamp in de Meer, Hristo Stoichkov, Michael Laudrup en Ronald Koeman en de rest van het Dream Team in Camp Nou, in Den Haag alsnog de kroon op zijn loopbaan kon komen zetten.

I like it to play football by myself, to watch it on television, but also to read articles about football. The opportunity to combine my love for football with a scientific research for my Bachelor Thesis, could not be better for me. During an orientating conversation about the topic for my Bachelor Thesis with my thesis mentor Jos Bijman, I mentioned that I was always interested in the management strategies of organizations. What kind of choices an organization makes, what kind of resources an organization uses, what an organization wants to achieve and its performances. Following closely this process in large organizations is something I like to do in my leisure time. My thesis mentor Jos Bijman asked for my hobbies and he mentioned that there was a possibility to combine my interests in the management strategies of organizations with my main hobby football. In this way the topic Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie was created. The Bachelor Thesis Management strategies of football clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie is executed in a qualitative research, using a literature study. This Thesis is written in the context of my graduation of the study Business-and Consumer Studies (specialization Business) at the Wageningen University and Research. From October 28 2019 until January 23 I have been working on the research and writing of my Thesis.
