various reunions achieved, most famous case being Egypt • Cyrus (Κύρος, Patriarch of Alexandria, 631-42) • Cyrus “Pact of Union” (633): brought many non- Chalcedonians of Alexandria back into union mention either of one or two operations of Christ • aim was to avoid controversy The “Ekthesis” (638) • issued by Heraclius • in substance the same as the Psephos, but this time with the emperor’s public defence of the dyothelite (or “two will”) position • held at Carthage • result: Pyyprrhus accepts orthodox ypy, and is persuaded to declare his abandonment of Monothelite doctrine at the papal The Gender of Money: Byzantine Empresses on Coins (324–802) Leslie Brubaker and Helen Tobler Coins played different roles in the ancient and medieval worlds from those that they play in the economy today. In the late antique and early Byzantine world – that is, roughly between 300 and 800 – there were in a sense two currencies: gold coins and base metal (copper) coins. Both were minted and distributed by the state, but the gold solidi (in Latin) or nomismata (in Greek), introduced in 309, were by the end of the fifth century in practice used above all for the payment of tax and for major transactions such as land sales, while the copper coins (nummi, replaced in 498 by folles) were broadly the currency of market transactions.1 Another striking difference is that late antique and Byzantine coin types changed with great frequency: as an extreme example, Maria Alföldi catalogued over seven hundred different types for a single emperor, Constantine I the Great (306–37, sole ruler from 324).2 There are many reasons for this, but one of the most import- ant has to do with communication: centuries before the advent of the press, images on coins were a means to circulate information about the state. This is particularly true of the first three and a half centuries covered by this article. While the extent to which coins were used in daily exchange transactions is still uncertain, and was very variable, the frequency with which they appear in archaeological excavations of urban sites throughout the former eastern Roman empire until 658 indicates their wide diffusion.

While Herakleios the elder seems to have had no designs on the throne himself, he did instigate the rebellion with his son in 608. However, only his son seems to have gone on the expedition to Constantinople to overthrow the unpopular usurper Phokas, who had murdered the Emperor Maurice and his family. Herakleios had the support of both the Greens and the church hierarchy in his overthrow of Phokas, but his reign was by no means a peaceful one. Herakleios’reign was one of spectacular defeat, success, and still spectacular defeat again. Herakleios is a particularly difficult emperor to analyze. He was pivotal, yet sources are sometimes contradictory and not always clear.

    THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEVENTH CENTURY 369 4.3 HERACLIUS (610-640) 4.3.1 MAJOR HISTORICAL EVENTS DURING HIS REIGN As mentioned above, a rebellion against Phocas that started in 608 in Africa spread to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria and led to the accession of Heraclius to the Byzantine throne in 610.15 Except for a short period from 630 to 636 – the time of the Byzan- tine re-occupation – the reign of Heraclius was characterized by a continuous state of warfare, first against the Persians in the East, the Slavs and Avars in the West, and later against the Arabs. Unlike his predecessors, Heraclius commanded many of his military campaigns in person (KAEGI 2003:68-69). Moreover, he was the only Byzantine Emperor who visited Jerusalem. The death of Heraclius in 641 roughly coincides with the fall of Palestine into Arab hands and marks the chronological end of this discussion. He fought against several barbar- ian towns, some of which were dominated and from others he was expelled. He thus reincorporated big land extensions into the Byzantine Empire. The Italian Peninsula, the Mediterranean Coast of Africa and the High Armenia are some of the most significant treasures acquired by Justinian I. He also estab- lished a system of fortifications in the Balkan borderlands to prevent slaves and Avars from attempting invasion. Such achievements resulted in the exhaustion of the Estate resources and that made it impossible to face the Persian armies, who were guided by Chos- roes I and entered the East Frontier in the Byzantine Empire. The invasions began in 545 when Justinian was over sixty. So, tired as he was, he preferred to negotiate peace with the Persians. The Treaty was revewed several times up to 562 when peace of 50 years was arranged. Those peace treaties benefited Persia because they stipulated Byzantium had to pay an annual tribute. After Justinian I's death in 565, Byzantine Emperors of the second half of the Sixth Century faced the difficult task of governing a State whose weak economy obstructed the development and undermined the stability of society. The Emperors had to choose between paying tribute to Persians or increasing taxes to their citizens in order to pay for a war that would free them of the con- tracted responsibilities with the Persian Empire.

    GRANHOLM GENEALOGY BYZANTINE ROYAL ANCESTRY Emperors, 578-1453 1 INTRODUCTION During the first half of the first century Byzantium and specifically Constantinople was the most influentional and riches capital in the world. Great buildings, such as Hagia Sophia were built during these times. Despite the distances, contacts with the Scandinavians took place, in some cases cooperation against common enemies. Vikings traded with them and served in the Emperors’ Court. Sweden’s King Karl XII took refuge there for four years after the defeat in the war against Peter the Great of Russia in Poltava. Our 6th great grandfather, “ Cornelius von Loos” was with him and made drawings of many of the famous buildings in that region. The Byzantine lineages to us are shown starting fr o m different ancestors. There are many royals to whom we have a direct ancestral relationship and others who are distant cousins. These give an interesting picture of the history from those times. Wars took place among others with the Persians, which are also described in the book about our Persian Royal Ancestry. Additional text for many persons is highlighted in the following lists. This story begins with Emperor Tiberius II, (47th great grandfather) born in 520 and ends with the death of Emperor Constantine XI (15th cousin, 17 times removed) in battle in 1453. His death marked the final end of the Roman Empire, which had continued in the East for just under one thousand years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. No relations to us, the initial Emperor of the Byzantine was Justin I , born a peasant and a swineherd by initial occupation, reigned 518 to 527.

    1 A Short (and rough) Guide to Byzantine Names for SCA personae This is a listing of names that may be useful for constructing Byzantine persona. Having said that, please note that the term „Byzantine‟ is one that was not used in the time of the Empire. They referred to themselves as Romans. Please also note that this is compiled by a non-historian and non-linguist. When errors are detected, please let me know so that I can correct them. Additional material is always welcomed. It is a work in progress and will be added to as I have time to research more books. This is the second major revision and the number of errors picked up is legion. If you have an earlier copy throw it away now. Some names of barbarians who became citizens are included. Names from „client states‟ such as Serbia and Bosnia, as well as adversaries, can be found in my other article called Names for other Eastern Cultures. In itself it is not sufficient documentation for heraldic submission, but it will give you ideas and tell you where to start looking. The use of (?) means that either I have nothing that gives me an idea, or that I am not sure of what I have. If there are alternatives given of „c‟, „x‟ and „k‟ modern scholarship prefers the „k‟. „K‟ is closer to the original in both spelling and pronunciation. This specific manner of literary presentation is particularly manifested in Nikephoros‘ original approach in portrayal of the Byzantine emperors and the patriarchs of Constantinople of the 7th and 8th centuries, thus embedding a specific idea of both imperial governance personalized in the reign of emperor Herakleios, and mutual rela- tions between the Empire and the patriarchs of the Church of Constantinople, as presented in the accounts of patriarchs Sergios and Pyrrhos. An obvious need for writing about the past at the end of the 8th century, which was the time when new models where established in relations between the Empire and the Church of Constantinople after the first wave of iconoclasm, leads one to think that the historiographical production, clearly emerging from within a narrow circle of men gathered around the patriarch Tarasios, had the need to search for and offer to their con- temporaries models which they might imitate but which might also serve as recognition and legitimization of their own ideas.1 This was to be gained by appropriate historical writing, and shaping of history through literary modes of narration.

  • The Life of St. Maximus the Confessor
    The Twenty-First Day of the Month of January The Life of Our Holy Monastic Father Maximus the Confessor and Martyr1 The venerable Maximus, whose name means “greatest” and whose way of life was unsurpassed, was born in the renowned queen of cities, Constantinople. His parents were of noble lineage and Orthodox, and gave him an excellent education. Maximus thoroughly studied philosophy and theology, and was widely respected for his wisdom, even in the imperial palace. Impressed by his knowledge and virtuous life, the Emperor Heraclius com­ pelled him to become asekretis or first secretary and made him a chief counselor. The entire senate loved and respected Maximus, whose competence in affairs of government was of the highest order. In those days appeared the heresy of Monothelitism, accord­ ing to which Christ our Lord possesses a single will. Its antecedent was the delusion of Eutyches, who asserted that our Lord has but one nature, and denied the Orthodox teaching that He, as God incarnate, has two undivided and unmingled natures, wills, and operations in one person. First to defend and disseminate Monothelitism were Cyrus, Patriarch of Alexandria, and Sergius, Patriarch of Constantinople. The Emperor Heraclius was drawn into this error early on by the two hierarchs.
