If that happens, how should the UK respond? LN: Well, I think the President of the European Commission’s comments were deeply, deeply unhelpful. I think that it was right listening to the Commissioner just now that we should try to calm down these tensions. We’ve seen throughout this process that we do better when we work together, that if we don’t defeat the virus everywhere we’re not going to defeat it anywhere, and there are new strains of the virus that are currently emerging. The South African variant which scientists are particularly worried about that is starting to gain traction in France that we need to be very mindful of. We may not be out of the woods with Covid yet and so we’ve got to work together. That means we need to calm these tensions; blockades are really unhelpful. I would urge the European Commission to calm down the language, cool the rhetoric and let’s try and work together to get through this crisis. If the EU banned the export of vaccines into the UK would the UK be justified in banning the exports of components back into the EU? REGISTER OF INTERESTS OF MEMBERS’ SECRETARIES AND RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (As at 15 October 2020) INTRODUCTION Purpose and Form of the Register In accordance with Resolutions made by the House of Commons on 17 December 1985 and 28 June 1993, holders of photo-identity passes as Members’ secretaries or research assistants are in essence required to register: ‘Any occupation or employment for which you receive over £410 from the same source in the course of a calendar year, if that occupation or employment is in any way advantaged by the privileged access to Parliament afforded by your pass. Any gift (eg jewellery) or benefit (eg hospitality, services) that you receive, if the gift or benefit in any way relates to or arises from your work in Parliament and its value exceeds £410 in the course of a calendar year.’ In Section 1 of the Register entries are listed alphabetically according to the staff member’s surname. Section 2 contains exactly the same information but entries are instead listed according to the sponsoring Member’s name. Administration and Inspection of the Register The Register is compiled and maintained by the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. Anyone whose details are entered on the Register is required to notify that office of any change in their registrable interests within 28 days of such a change arising. An updated edition of the Register is published approximately every 6 weeks when the House is sitting. Changes to the rules governing the Register are determined by the Committee on Standards in the House of Commons, although where such changes are substantial they are put by the Committee to the House for approval before being implemented.

She argues that the keynote address clarified the distinctiveness of his leadership style, and presented Starmer as a serious Prime Minister-in-waiting. Keir Starmer used his virtual speech to the 2020 party conference to tell voters that Labour is now ‘under a new leadership’ that is ‘serious about winning’ the next election. He also made clear that he is ready to do what it takes to take Labour ‘out of the shadows’, even if that involves embracing personality politics and placing patriotism at the centre of the party’s message. Starmer has been Labour leader for only five months but he has already established a reputation as a credible and competent leader of the opposition. Opinion polls routinely put him ahead of the Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the credibility stakes, and the media has often praised his competence and famous forensic approach to opposition politics. This is a welcome new territory for Labour – Starmer’s predecessors, Jeremy Corbyn and Ed Miliband, struggled to endear themselves to the average voter – so it is no surprise that he is making the most of it. IDEAS INTO ACTION: BUILDING THE OPEN LEFT WWW.OPENLABOUR.ORG IDEAS INTO ACTION: BUILDING THE OPEN LEFT This document outlines an initial set of political positions for Open Labour, building on our launch statement. It provides a mandate to our newly renamed National Committee (NC) to carry out a programme of action, to make public arguments on behalf of the organisation, and to adopt campaigns within the Labour Party which meet our strategic and policy priorities. The document was proposed by our interim Management Committee to our Founding Conference in March 2017, which was attended by 23 0 people. It was adopted with the inclusion of a range of amendments. Those seeking further information about the contents of the document can get in touch with us at [email protected]. The document also marks the end of the steering phase of Open Labour’s development. As a statement of intent it is entitled ‘Ideas into Action: Building the Open Left’. This reflects our intention as an organisation not to resign to a polarised Labour Party where debate is curtailed and closed down, but to respond with ideas and action for something better. We will renew the realist strand of the Labour left as the ‘open left’, define and argue for this as a valid and independent tradition of thought and action, and campaign and organise to carry its objectives into being.
