REVIEW DVD Review: Arena - Smoke & Mirrors May 19, 2006 Paul Roy On September 22nd, 2005, at the Wyspianski Theatre in Katowice, Poland, British neo- progressive rockers Arena celebrated their 10th anniversary and filmed this excellent, two- hour, career-spanning concert, which comes to you as Smoke & Mirrors. This concert features the same lineup of Clive Nolan (keyboards), Mick Pointer (drums), Rob Sowden (vocals), John Mitchell (guitars), and Ian Salmon (bass), that appeared on their last concert DVD, 2003's Caught In The Act, and have now miraculously been together since 1999. After overcoming numerous personnel changes, during the band's first four years, it appears that things have finally stabilized in the Arena camp. Although not one of my favorite progressive-rock bands, Arena have consistently churned out high-quality music, since their 1995 debut, Songs From The Lions Cage. Each album unfolds with complex moods, and dramatic concepts that blend elements of symphonic- prog, metal, and classic-rock, and often demand repeated listens to fully absorb all that is being unraveled before you. My reaction to the band mostly mirrors what you see from the remarkably subdued audiences on each of their DVDs. Rarely do they rise from the comfort of their theater seats, or manage more than a few polite claps. Not your typical rock concert vibe. The Salt and The Sand 10 ans d'Arena En 2005, Arena célébrait l'anniversaire de la sortie de leur premier album, Songs from the Lion's Cage, sorti en 1995. Au cours de ces dix années, Arena est devenu un des meilleurs gardiens de la flamme progressive anglaise. Ce 10ème anniversaire est l'occasion de fêter la musique d'Arena et de se pencher sur l'histoire de ce grand groupe. Beaucoup de choses ont été écrites sur Arena et ses membres passés et présents, mais l'histoire complète de ces remarquables musiciens n'a jamais été agencée de manière décente et complète. D'où l'idée d'écrire une biographie sur l'histoire d'Arena. Nous avons pensé, que si jamais une biographie devait être écrite, alors l'année 2005 était le bon moment pour le faire. Quand nous avons décidé, fin 2004, que cette histoire devait être racontée, cela voulait dire que les investigations devaient commencer. Pas seulement sur toute la matière existante, mais aussi sur la création de nouveau matériel, nous avons décidé de faire de nouveaux interviews. Heureusement la majorité des membres du groupe étaient prêts et disponibles pour partager leurs opinions avec nous. En outre nous avons contacté plusieurs anciens membres, ainsi que quelques personnes qui ont été étroitement impliquées. Nous les remercions tous pour leur contribution, particulièrement Clive, Mick, John J., John M. Rob, David et Mattias. I have to admit going in · Stats that I hardly knew what to expect from Arena since I had never followed them before or had much exposure to their Visit Our Friends At: material in the ten years that they have existed. This made watching the DVD film a little sketchy for me until it began and I found myself caught in some very interesting Progressive Rock music. As a long-time fan of old Marillion, I definitely caught some similarities in the style between Arena and the Fish years for Marillion. Singer Robert Snowden is a great front man with a voice that suits the material very well. He also has a couple of Google Ads costume changes during the set which bring to mind influences of Gabriel and Fish from Progressive years past and help out with the overall effect of Ads by Goooooogle the bands music. The music is performed to perfection by John Mitchell (guitar), Clive Nolan (keyboards), Ian Salmon (bass) and Mick Pointer (drums). Readers who were up on the band as much as I was might also find it interesting to realize that drummer Pointer was one of the early members of Marillion.

Arena – Double Vision (55:59, CD, Verglas Music, 2018) Warum nicht gleich mit dem Fazit zum letzten Arena Album The„ Unquiet Sky“ an dieser Stelle beginnen? Vor allem, wenn’s auch hier passt, nämlich: „angenehm abendfüllender Cinemascope- NeoProg von gewieften alten Hasen.“ Damit wäre schon (fast) alles gesagt zum aktuellen Longplayer der Mannen um Mick Pointer und Clive Nolan. Eben nur fast, denn „Double Vision“ wagt den Brückenschlag zum 97er Erfolgwerk „The Visitor“, war bereits dort ein Titel gleichen Namens vertreten. Doch logischerweise hat sich die Band in den letzten Jahren nicht nur personell verändert, so dass von damals neben dem Duo Pointer / Nolan immerhin noch Gitarrist John Mitchell mit von der Partie ist, während seit 2005 den Platz am Mikrofon Paul Manzi inne hält, sowie Bassist Kylan Amos das Line-up vervollständigt. Video laden Die Arrangements wurden bei der NeoProg-Institution gerade seit dem 2005er Restart etwas direkter, griffiger und weniger verspielt ausgerichtet, ohne auf die typischen Arena- Trademarks aus bombastischem NeoProg, mächtigen, hymnischen Melodien und feiner Gitarrenarbeit zu verzichten. „The Unquiet Sky“ legte bereits von der Power her eine gewaltige Schippe drauf, „Double Vision“ greift nun vermehrt das epische, etwas härtere Flair der Vergangenheit auf, bietet mehr Soloparts und hat noch mehr „Back To The Arena Roots“ Feeling.

Convention Prog-résiste, 25.-26.04., Soignies (B), Centre culturel An den zwei Festivaltagen traten insgesamt zehn Bands in Erscheinung, unterschiedlicher Herkunft und Stilrichtungen. Naturgemäß stark repräsentiert – auf Künstlerseite wie bei Zuhörern – das Gebiet BENELUX plus Frankreich, aus dem allein 70 Prozent der Bands und sicher über 90 Prozent des Publikums stammten. Ob sich die Idee der Veranstalter, jedem Tag ein kostenloses „Open Space“-Konzert voran zu stellen, nachhaltig lohnt, mag zu bezweifeln sein, zumal der Wettergott diesmal nicht mitspielte und überdies nur eine geringe Zahl an Gästen bereits am ersten Tag vor Ort war. D i e L o k a l m a t a d o r en AmAndA sorgten für eine schwungvolle Eröffnung des eigentlichen Festivals. Obwohl als Band nur semi-professionell tätig (was unter anderem die verzögerte Veröffentlichung ihres vierten Albums „Tuxedo“ erklärt), überzeugte die Truppe um Keyboarder Mikael Cauchies und Sänger Thibaut de Halleux mit einem gekonnt vorgetragenen Mix aus Stücken des neuen Albums und älteren Klassikern. Die Bandbreite der in Kostümen und mit der üblichen Theatralik präsentierten Werke ging dabei von verspielt bis sympho-progrockig, wobei sich DrummerGreg Depret angenehm aktiv hervortat, der neue Gitarrist hingegen sehr unauffällig blieb. Überraschend wurde mit Trompeter Guy Hennaut eine enorme Bereicherung für den Sound der Band eingebunden, die man sich auch für die Zukunft wünschen würde (Update: er ist tatsächlich inzwischen als festes Mitglied eingebunden). Laura Piazzai & Clive Nolan – From The Outside In (58:40, CD, Eigenpressung/ Just For Kicks, 2019) „From the Outside In“ ist ein weiteres Album des britischen Keyboarders Clive Nolan, welches er gemeinsam mit der italienischen Sängerin Laura Piazzai aufgenommen hat. Den meisten dürfte Nolan kein Unbekannter sein, so sind seine Aktivitäten, vielfältigen Projekte und Bandmitgliedschaften (u.a. Pendragon, Arena, Shadowland, Caamora, Strangers on a Train) doch seit Jahren ein fester Bestandteil der Progressive Rock Szene. Nun konnte es sich der gute Clive zum wiederholten Male nicht verkneifen, erneut außerhalb seines sonst üblichen Betätigungsfeldes aktiv zu werden. Musicals oder opereske Werke sind ebenfalls ein Bereich, in dem er mit weiteren zum Teil namhaften Künstlern seine Ideen umzusetzen versucht. Die Nolan Kenner werden sich u.a. an seine Produktionen mit Tracy Hitchings sowie Agnieszka Świta erinnern. Als Beispiele hierfür sind das 2017 veröffentlichte Boxset „King’s Ransom“, aber auch die früheren Veröffentlichungen wie „She“ und „Alchemy“ zu nennen. Was die aktuelle Veröffentlichung betrifft, könnte die Kombination aus italienischer Rockröhre und dem Master of Prog ein interessantes Erlebnis sein, zumal Komponist und Arrangeur Clive Nolan bei seinen Projekten schon für die ein oder andere Überraschung gesorgt hat, allerdings leider nicht immer mit großem Zuspruch.
