Arena Biographie The Salt and The Sand 10 ans d'Arena En 2005, Arena célébrait l'anniversaire de la sortie de leur premier album, Songs from the Lion's Cage, sorti en 1995. Au cours de ces dix années, Arena est devenu un des meilleurs gardiens de la flamme progressive anglaise. Ce 10ème anniversaire est l'occasion de fêter la musique d'Arena et de se pencher sur l'histoire de ce grand groupe. Beaucoup de choses ont été écrites sur Arena et ses membres passés et présents, mais l'histoire complète de ces remarquables musiciens n'a jamais été agencée de manière décente et complète. D'où l'idée d'écrire une biographie sur l'histoire d'Arena. Nous avons pensé, que si jamais une biographie devait être écrite, alors l'année 2005 était le bon moment pour le faire. Quand nous avons décidé, fin 2004, que cette histoire devait être racontée, cela voulait dire que les investigations devaient commencer. Pas seulement sur toute la matière existante, mais aussi sur la création de nouveau matériel, nous avons décidé de faire de nouveaux interviews. Heureusement la majorité des membres du groupe étaient prêts et disponibles pour partager leurs opinions avec nous. En outre nous avons contacté plusieurs anciens membres, ainsi que quelques personnes qui ont été étroitement impliquées. Nous les remercions tous pour leur contribution, particulièrement Clive, Mick, John J., John M. Rob, David et Mattias. Nous remercions aussi ceux dont nous avons utilisé les images ou dessins, parfois -désolés- sans autorisation. Les photos ont été fournies par Marcel Kolenbrander (1995-1998), Robin Stierkat (1998), Jan-Jaap de Haan (1999-2003), John Vis (2005), Olga Otten (2005) et beaucoup d'autres, que nous ne pouvons pas tracer. Une biographie sur l'histoire d'Arena doit être écrite de manière appropriée. Non seulement la musique doit être la partie centrale de l'histoire, mais il doit y avoir beaucoup d'informations de fond, et quelques anecdotes doivent être mises en perspective. Une biographie est un hommage à un groupe, elle doit rester objective, tout en étant positive. C'est ce que nous avons essayé de faire, car de cette façon, la lumière peut être faite sur deux points essentiels comme les albums 'The Visitor' et 'Contagion' et les événements plus tristes comme les départs de Paul Wrightson et John Jowitt. Comme nous n'avons aucun budget et n'avons pas pour objectif de 'gagner' quelque chose avec ce projet, nous avons rapidement décidé qu'il serait disponible pour n'importe quel fan d'Arena et ce gratuitement. Par conséquent cette biographie est accessible à tous les adhérents de The Cage. Ceci nous permettra d'enrichir l'histoire de nouveaux faits dans le futur. Des corrections peuvent être faites là où nous nous sommes trompés ou avons commis des erreurs, des ajouts peuvent être également faits, tant que vivra Arena. Ainsi, nous vous présentons, ce jour, exactement 10 ans après leur première prestation publique, la version 1.0 de The Salt and the Sand: 10 ans d'Arena. Nous espérons que vous l'apprécierez! Jan-Jaap de Haan & Erik Beers En 2005, sortait l’excellente biographie d’Arena faite par Jan-Jaap de Haan et Erik Beers. 2006 voit naître sa traduction. Quand est parue cette biographie, la question de la traduction s’est posée. Pour le fun, pourquoi ne pas traduire ce texte pour essayer d’en saisir toutes finesses, les termes et expressions employés étant quelques fois obscurs. Après nous être aperçus que nous avions commencé une traduction chacun de notre côté, nous avons décidé de nous partager le ‘travail’. Nous avons essayé de coller au mieux au texte original, afin de ne pas déformer les pensées des différents protagonistes. En voici le résultat, nous vous en souhaitons bonne lecture. L’histoire d’Arena débute en 1993 au Mc Donalds de Hemel Hempstead, où Mick Pointer rencontre par hasard un rédacteur du magazine Silhobbit, un fanzine dédié au rock progressif. A cette époque, cela fait 10 ans que Mick est hors-jeu du circuit musical. Comme il a une vague idée de ce que pourrait être un nouveau projet musical, Richard Jordan, lui suggère de rencontrer Clive Nolan. Richard Jordan: "J’ai eu quelques conversations avec Clive où il me disait que si jamais je mettais la main sur Mick Pointer, je devais lui dire qu’il voudrait bien tester quelques trucs avec lui. Je ne savais pas s’il plaisantait ou si c’était sérieux. Quand j’ai finalement mis la main sur Mick, je lui ai suggéré que ce pourrait être une voie pour gagner pas mal d’argent. Je pense qu’il a été un peu surpris, mais petit à petit l’idée s’est ancrée dans son cerveau, et il s’est dit pourquoi pas. C’était avant Pâques 1993, et je n’ai jamais réellement pensé qu’ils feraient plus d’un album." Mick et Clive se sont rencontrés dans un pub près de St Alban et ont partagé quelques agréables soirées. En raison des concerts de Pendragon et des autres participations de Clive, ils mettent plusieurs mois pour se rencontrer à nouveau, cette fois dans Maidenhead. Mick apporte quelques bandes, juste des thèmes et des lignes mélodiques. La première session aura pour résultat l'écriture de" Valley of the Kings" en un quart d’heure. Arena est né, plus de 15 ans après le premier projet musical de Mick. Mick Pointer Michael James Pointer est né le 22 juillet 1956 à Bull dans le Buckinghamshire. A l’âge de 19 ans, il assiste aux répétitions de son ami Clive Butler qui a formé un groupe avec son frère. Il observe le batteur: “Ce gars était probablement un bille, mais sur l’instant j’ai pensé : “Ça, c’est du son !”. J’ai emprunté le high-hat, et juste ça, pour m’entraîner. Après cela, ma mère m’a acheté mon premier kit de batterie et nous avons formé" The Butlers" . Clive Butler était l’ami de Mick depuis l'âge de 5 ans, et il habitait à trois maisons de chez lui. Il est décédé en 2003; l’album d’Arena ‘Live and Life’ est dédié à sa mémoire. C’est aux alentours de 1978 que Mick et son ami Doug Irvine forment un groupe instrumental appelé Silmarillion, nom dérivé du livre de J.R.R. Tolkien, que Mick traînait souvent avec lui. Auparavant, ils avaient été deux membres actifs du groupe Electric Gypsy, mais la direction musicale prise par le groupe ne leur convenait plus. La première expérience musicale de Mick fut un an avant dans un groupe local nommé Stockade, séparé sans avoir jamais fait de concert. Après le départ du guitariste et du claviériste de Silmarillion, Mick et Doug passent des annonces dans la presse musicale et les auditions de guitaristes venus de tout le pays se poursuivent jusqu’à l’arrivée de Steve Rothery, pendant l’été 1979. Le claviériste d’Aylesbury, Brian Jelliman les rejoint en octobre. Juste au moment où le groupe démarre l’enregistrement de ce qui doit devenir ‘The Web’, Doug quitte le groupe. Deux écossais réagissent à l’annonce pour remplacer le bassiste / chanteur. Ils se présentent à l'audition le 2 janvier 1981 sur des paroles déjà composées pour un morceau. Derek William Dick et Diz Minnitt retenus, le groupe enregistre, pendant l’été 1981, une démo trois titres, où l'on trouve ‘Garden Party’, ‘He knows you know’ et ‘Charting the single’. Il se passe beaucoup de concerts avant de les voir à leur premier show en tête d’affiche au Marquee le 25 janvier 1982, avec Mark Kelly aux claviers en remplacement de Brian Jelliman. Suivirent les sessions du show du ‘Friday Rock Show’ de Tommy Vance, où ils enregistrent ‘The Web’, ‘Three boats down from the candy’ et ‘Forgotten sons’. Plus tard au printemps, Pete Trewavas remplace Diz à la basse, il s’ensuit une tournée à travers l’Angleterre, l’Ecosse et le pays de Galles. Ayant rencontré un succès massif lors de plusieurs festivals d’été, dont celui de Reading, ils signent chez EMI en septembre 1982. En octobre 1982, Marillion enregistre son premier ‘single’" Market square heroes" , fêté par un autre concert au Marquee. Plus tard, en 1982, c'est la première version live de ‘Script of the Jester’s tears’, le titre phare de leur premier album paru en 1983, qui rentre dans le top 10 en Grande- Bretagne. Son dernier concert avec le groupe, le 18 avril 1983, est enregistré et réalisé sur la K7 vidéo (plus tard en Dvd) ‘Recital of the script’. Cette prestation inclut tout l’album ainsi que le désormais classique ‘Grendel’, un morceau épique qui avait fait grande impression auprès des fans l’année précédente, parmi eux, un étudiant nommé Clive Nolan. Clive Nolan Le jeune Clive Nolan écrit sa première chanson à l’âge de 13 ans, à la mort de son chat Kim. A ce moment, il se rend compte qu’écrire de la musique est bon moyen d’exprimer ses sentiments. Clive a grandi dans une famille de musiciens, près de Stroud dans le Gloucestershire. Ses parents sont professeurs de piano, et Clive apprend le violon dès l’âge de 8 ans.

Der Restart bzw. die Wiederbelebung von It Bites ohne deren ehemaligen Sänger / Gitarristen Francis Dunnery begann Ende der 2000er Jahre ursprünglich nur als Liveband. Doch nachdem man mit John Mitchell einen durchaus veritablen neuen Frontmann gefunden hatte, wollte man sich ebenfalls wieder ins Studio wagen. Leider stand dafür Bassist Dick Nolan nicht mehr zur Verfügung, so dass man das 2008er Album „The Tall Ships“ als Trio mit John Mitchell (Gesang, Gitarre, Bass), John Beck (Keyboards, Gesang) undBob Dalton (Schlagzeug) einspielte. Vier Jahr später folgte der Nachfolger „Map Of The Past“ mitLee Pomeroy als neuen Bassisten. Beide Alben liegen nun als Reissue in remastertem Format mit jeweils zwei Bonustracks (Material der Special Editions bzw. Single B-Seiten: ‚These Words‘, ‚When I Fall‘, ‚Lighthouse‘, ‚Come On‘) vor. Weiterhin sind beide Ausgaben erstmals auch im Vinylformat erhältlich. Zwar versuchte man auf beiden Alben in gewissem Maße die Tradition von It Bites wiederzubeleben, doch klingt vieles eher nach Kino, dem Bandprojekt, bei dem sowohl John Mitchell, als auch John Beck beteiligt sind und waren, sowie dem einige Jahre später folgenden Soloprojekt Lonely Robot von John Mitchell.

REVIEW DVD Review: Arena - Smoke & Mirrors May 19, 2006 Paul Roy On September 22nd, 2005, at the Wyspianski Theatre in Katowice, Poland, British neo- progressive rockers Arena celebrated their 10th anniversary and filmed this excellent, two- hour, career-spanning concert, which comes to you as Smoke & Mirrors. This concert features the same lineup of Clive Nolan (keyboards), Mick Pointer (drums), Rob Sowden (vocals), John Mitchell (guitars), and Ian Salmon (bass), that appeared on their last concert DVD, 2003's Caught In The Act, and have now miraculously been together since 1999. After overcoming numerous personnel changes, during the band's first four years, it appears that things have finally stabilized in the Arena camp. Although not one of my favorite progressive-rock bands, Arena have consistently churned out high-quality music, since their 1995 debut, Songs From The Lions Cage. Each album unfolds with complex moods, and dramatic concepts that blend elements of symphonic- prog, metal, and classic-rock, and often demand repeated listens to fully absorb all that is being unraveled before you. My reaction to the band mostly mirrors what you see from the remarkably subdued audiences on each of their DVDs. Rarely do they rise from the comfort of their theater seats, or manage more than a few polite claps. Not your typical rock concert vibe.     Also Eden News Also Eden welcome Rich Harding posted 18 Jan 2010 Finding a replacement for Huw has proved to be no easy task. Huw co-founded Also Eden and naturally, his voice has defined so much of the bands sound. However, we’re delighted to announce that we have found a new singer to take us in a new and exciting direction. Rich Harding has been singing live since 1985, fronting bands as diverse as The Allnight Chemists (space rock), Sane (prog) and Twisted (heavy metal). For the last few years he has also been performing with a number of successful Marillion "tribute" bands, in the UK and on the continent (Misplaced Neighbourhood, Lords of the Backstage and Skyline Drifters). His voice is very different to Huw’s - but he has power, energy and enthusiasm and we know he’s going to make a huge impact on the band’s sound this year. Rich says: 'Having only done tribute gigs - fun though they are - in the four years since leaving Twisted, I've been searching for the right opportunity to get my creative juices flowing again and am delighted to be joining Also Eden. This made watching the DVD film a little sketchy for me until it began and I found myself caught in some very interesting Progressive Rock music. As a long-time fan of old Marillion, I definitely caught some similarities in the style between Arena and the Fish years for Marillion. Singer Robert Snowden is a great front man with a voice that suits the material very well. He also has a couple of Google Ads costume changes during the set which bring to mind influences of Gabriel and Fish from Progressive years past and help out with the overall effect of Ads by Goooooogle the bands music. The music is performed to perfection by John Mitchell (guitar), Clive Nolan (keyboards), Ian Salmon (bass) and Mick Pointer (drums). Readers who were up on the band as much as I was might also find it interesting to realize that drummer Pointer was one of the early members of Marillion.

    Beyond Imagination In January 1997, IQ began work on 'Subterranea', their sixth studio album and without doubt their most ambitious project to date. The 105-minute 2CD set would form the basis for a completely new stage show. "After we'd finally managed to release 'Forever Live', we didn't really want to release a single album studio album", explained Mike Holmes. "We felt it would have been a bit of an anticlimax after there quality and standard of the boxed set. We also had quite a bit of material kicking around." Peter Nicholls: "When we were writing 'Subterranea', I came across loads of old rehearsal tapes with ideas that we'd never finished because we'd got sidetracked by something else. There was an awful lot of material there that we felt we should have another look at." The decision to build the album around a concept was an important one for the band, as Martin Orford remembered: "With this album, it was nice to have the framework of a story to work to so that we knew the sort of pieces we had to find for particular sections." So creative were the 'Subterranea' writing sessions, though, that IQ had no need to resort to reworking unfinished ideas. In fact, two tracks, 'The Universal Scam' and 'Eyes Of The Blind', were omitted from the final album, only being released two years later on the rarities CD, 'The Lost Attic'. "Right from the beginning, this project was conceived as an album and a live show", explained Peter Nicholls. "We've always wanted to present the band on stage this way but there's always been a reason, usually financial, for not doing it.
