The Royal Australian Navy’s future submarine project is a case in point. To the public eye, very little appears to have been happening over the last couple of years — an impression which is, hopefully, quite false but, inevitably, snippets of information emerge from which conclusions are rapidly drawn. The emergence of the Japanese Souryu-class submarine as a possible contender for the RAN’s new submarine illustrates. Of course, there is no smoke without fire, and other emerging suggestions include the possible construction of the new submarines overseas noting, as we are being frequently reminded, that the support of the submarines through life is a sizeable task in itself which will employ many people for decades.     From the President Welcome to this edition of Call the Hands, our last in the Society’s 50th anniversary year. It includes a variety of short articles which are connected through various themes including the RAN’s first ship, HMAS Parramatta (I) and her namesakes. Another connection is the shared anniversary of the Naval Association of Australia (NAA) celebrating its 100th anniversary. Accordingly, we acknowledge our many readers who are members of the NAA. Their service in the RAN (past and present) has contributed to the history of Australia’s great Navy. The Society’s close connection with Parramatta (I) stems from the not insignificant project to recover her bow and stern sections from a Hawksbury River mudflat. These sections are now prominently displayed in Sydney. Additional information about this fascinating project recently came to light and has been published in the December Naval Historical Review now being distributed to members. We also feature a recent NAA commemorative service for HMAS Parramatta (II) and recognition of the commissioning commanding officer of HMAS Parramatta (III), Rear Admiral Guy Griffiths RAN, Rtd. Many interesting and sometimes obscure naval stories remain untold. Occasional paper 97 is a good example. It is the story of a small party of sailors landed in Arnhem Land from HMAS Fremantle (I) in 1958 to observe Japanese pearl fishing operations. This story was shared by Eric Deshon with Australian National Maritime Museum’s oral history volunteers and published in the ANMM’s volunteer newsletter ‘All Hands’ in June 2018. Recording historic events on canvas has been a traditional art form which continues today.

Built at an oxygen-depleted altitude of 4,285 metres (14,000 ft), Grasberg is a spectacular feat of engineering. It is the world’s largest copper and gold mine in terms of reserves, and its operations are on a scale unique even by the standards of modern mega-mining. While the spectacular open pit dominates the landscape, one of the world’s largest underground mining operations is also part of the Grasberg complex. Production from the underground ore bodies, which are beneath and adjacent to the Grasberg open pit, are expected to ramp up over several years to around 240,000 tonnes a day.     OCCASIONAL PAPER 59 Call the Hands Issue No. 32 July 2019 Francis James Ranken Early Career Francis James Ranken was born in 1864 at ‘Saltram’, Eglinton, near Bathurst. He was the eldest son of James Australian Ranken and was educated at All Saints’ College, Bathurst. His grandfather, George Ranken, was one of Bathurst’s earliest settlers, and was granted 2,000 acres at Eglinton in 1822. Francis went to sea at the young age of 14 in a clipper ship, and eventually became an officer in the Orient Line. He joined the Royal Navy Reserve (RNR) as a Sub-Lieutenant in August 1891 and after training resumed service with the Orient Line. He married Menina Blanche Paige (who was born in Maryborough, Queensland in 1863) in London in 1893. He was serving as Chief Officer in RMS Orient when she sailed from Melbourne for Sydney on 9 January 1897, encountering very rough weather after passing Wilson’s Promontory. On the next afternoon the brig Phyllis was sighted flying distress signals and Orient learnt that the crew were starving. Although a huge sea was running, a boat with Ranken and a crew of six managed to row to the brig and transfer food. The return journey was even more perilous as the wind and sea heightened and the men were finally pulled from the boat onboard the Orient. The boat could not be recovered as the sea was too rough. Whilst in Sydney, Orient’s Captain and boats crew’s efforts were recognised by the National Shipwreck Society and Ranken received a gold medal and a pair of binoculars.

Ltd, Sydney, by Caledon Ship Building & Engineering Co., Dundee, in 1938, having been completed in July of that year. She was designed to carry bagged sugar in the holds and molasses in wing tanks. With a crew of 37, she traded Sydney, North Queensland ports, Fiji and New Zealand, back loading building materials, farming equipment, foodstuffs, railway tracks etc. She was renamed Maria Rosa when sold in 1968 and went to scrap under that name at Kaohsiung where she arrived 7 January 1973. Then on 28 January, in company with HMNZ Ships Wellio and Haa, the ship began a series of training and work-up exercises after the Christmas break. After three years of the design and build effort by HHI at the Ulsan shipyard, the new tanker Aotaroa began sea trials off the South Korean coast on 10 December ahead of her upcoming journey home to New Zealand. On 3 December the patrol vessel HMNZS Wellio in company with the Tuia 250 flotilla arrived in Wellington Harbour, including HMB Endeavour, Sirit of New Zeaand and a waka hourua. The national event celebrated New Zealand‟s voyaging heritage, and mark 250 years since the first onshore encounters between Māori and Captain James Cook and the crew of HMB Endeavour.

    “SPIRIT OF THE WILD” NAMING SPEECH BY HER EXCELLENCY PROFESSOR THE HONOURABLE KATE WARNER AC GOVERNOR OF TASMANIA PRINCES WHARF NO. 1, HOBART, MONDAY 14 MAY 2018 Good afternoon and thank you for inviting me as RACT Patron to officiate at this naming ceremony for the new Gordon River Cruises vessel, “Spirit of the Wild”. I begin by paying my respects to the traditional and original owners of this land— the Mouheneener people. I acknowledge the contemporary Tasmanian Aboriginal community, who have survived invasion and dispossession, and continue to maintain their identity, culture and Indigenous rights. May I acknowledge among you: ➢ Kathryn Westwood, Board President; ➢ Harvey Lennon, Chief Executive; ➢ Toby Richardson, co-director Richardson Devine Marine. In this the fourth year in which Gordon River Cruises has been owned and operated by the RACT, the delivery of “Spirit of the Wild” is a most significant achievement. The vessel will join and then replace “Lady Jane Franklin II”, and the small-group “MV Sophia”, in ensuring that Gordon River Cruises is able to continue to offer a pre-eminent Australian eco-tour experience. In this context it is important to record also that the Strahan waterfront is benefiting from upgrades in excess of 6.5 million dollars, through the five-year Community Asset Program funded by funded by TasPorts and the State Government. The West Coast Council has also expended considerable monies on street-scaping of the Strahan Wharf and cruise precinct. And TasPorts has worked very effectively with cruise terminal tenants World Heritage Cruises and RACT Destinations to effect the necessary cruise terminal redevelopment associated with the ultra-sophisticated of “Spirit of the Wild”.
